Around SBN: The Ten Worst Swings Of The 2011 Season

Ron Artest Appeals Suspension

As promised this summer, Ron Artest is fighting the length of his suspension stemming from his domestic violence arrest last spring. More accurately: The NBA Players Association is fighting the length of the suspension.

Something I hadn't seen reported before: The 'standard' suspension for domestic violence issues is three games. (How disturbing is it that there's a standard suspension length for beating your wife? Good God.) Ron, I assume, got a longer sentence because his track record.

I sincerely doubt the league will cave on this, and I'm positive the players association won't press this to arbitration. So expect 'John Salmons, NBA starter' for seven games to start the season.

Re: Ron Artest Appeals Suspension
I am certain to be in a distinct minority on this, but I do not think that "past actions" should have any bearing on Ron's punishment. Each individual's negative act warrants a specific punishment. Once a person has paid his debt, then I think the slate is clean. If not, then that person continues paying a price beyond the discipline that was originally determined to be sufficient. Either the punishment is sufficient, or it is not.

I hope Ron wins his fight; but, like TZ, I am expecting to see that frighteningly ugly beard in the starting line up.

Re: Ron Artest Appeals Suspension
There is something called learning from your past and Ron obviously hasn't done that.  I think the suspension is fair and why Artest is appealing is beyond me. If you count what Artest has done in the past, you can't paint a very picture without him.

Re: Ron Artest Appeals Suspension
I think the opposing argument to mine is not unreasonable.  I just don't find it as intellectually or ethically persuasive.  Consider how you'd feel if every mistake you'd ever made - no matter the area of the mistake - was counted against you in perpetuity. In Artest's case, something that happened on the court (i.e. the Detroit fiasco) is (possibly) counted against him for something that happened outside the court (domestic abuse).  My argument considers each "offense" at a granular level while yours suggests that all offenses - no matter the realm in which each occurs - must be considered in any disciplinary action.  Again, two different ways of viewing the world. Each, I think, with some validity.

Re: Ron Artest Appeals Suspension
You can make an argument Artest didn't start the brawl too (as I have many times and won't again on here).

Re: Ron Artest Appeals Suspension
I think this is his 3rd DV case though, isn't it?

He pled guilty or no contest on two, the third involved an ex-girfriend who was convicted?

I couldn't find a link quickly, but I did find this story:
http://www.nbacriminals.com/Ron_Artest.html

With this quote: "This is not Artest's first domestic violence arrest. He completed anger management for a domestic violence charge in 2004." and this one: "Police have been called to the home 5 times since last august for domestic disputes."

Maybe the league average is for first convictions?

Don't get me wrong, I'd like him back sooner too.

God bless you, Corliss. You always played as though you knew how expensive my tickets were. -section214
