Friday Footnotes
- Kevin Martin thinks he'll be back next week. Couldn't come at a better time for
my fantasy teamthe Kings. - Reggie Theus said the injured starters (Martin and Mike Bibby) will have to earn their jobs back. I'd be shocked if Martin isn't starting by Game 2 of his return; Bibby, I think, will also get into the starting lineup quickly, based more on Reggie's past statements about his leadership than any talent concerns.
- Yahoo!'s Top 40 Sports Figures of the Year, as decided by 47 bloggers. My ballot had Ron Artest and Isiah Thomas both rather high.
- Larry Brown, who lobbied for the Kings job this summer but barely got a look from the Maloofs, helped Theus slip into the circles of NBA coaching a few years ago.

I hate to say it...
Me, too
If my numbers are correct...
4-6 w/o Martin in lineup.
5-4 when both Artest and Martin are in lineup.
Granted, this is a very small sample to be drawing from, but it appears we might be at our best when both of these guys are playing.
Yeah...
Well the schedule plays a big part in that
w/o Martin: Wins over Bucks (x2), Nets, Sixers and Losses to Wizards, Nuggets (x 2), Clippers, Celtics (x2)
with both: Wins over Spurs, Jazz, Rockets, Knicks, Pistons and losses to Warriors, Wolves, Blazers and Suns at home
Your forgetting Beno.

You're not the boss of me
Suprise
Beno
He choked away the game against the Nuggets.
It's a little too early to annoint Beno as savior. He's a nice young talent, and hopefully he can play with passion every game. You could say that about a lot of Kings.

You mean
Seriously, and I've asked this before, who here considers Beno the second coming? I like him better than Bibby, which isn't saying much (since everyone knows my opinion on Bibby). I have seen very few people, if anyone, of the opinion that Beno is an All-Star in waiting.
And taking instances from a couple of games weakens your argument. I could similarly take a handful of instances and talk down the future of Kevin Martin as well - or Ron Artest, or Kobe or Lebron for that matter. We are talking about someone's body of work here - and how his style fits the offense.
I don't see Beno as the be-all, end-all of point guards in the league. But I do feel he is the right guy for this coach and this team at this moment in time.
Body of Work
At his best, Beno is a fine point guard, like the game he drained the 6 of 7 on the threes. It's the inconsistency that is frustrating to watch.
It's not just Beno. You watch the Celtics game, and the Celtics are bringing defense 48 minutes a game. The Kings get all giddy when they have a 5-7 minute streak of solid defense, but they can't sustain it for the whole game. And a lot of it has to do with effort and passion. They are getting beat to loose balls in crunch time and basically look like they are saving themselves. Saving themselves for what?
That goes for Salmons as well. If he and Beno have trouble getting up for games and are pacing themselves and can't bring it on a more consistent basis, then give me more of Douby and D. Jones. I loved the defensive effort they showed the other night, and it's too bad their teammates couldn't follow their example.

Come on man
And where do you get that Salmons and Beno are having trouble getting up for games?
I like Douby and D. Jones as well, but if you consider them to be your model of consistency, it makes me question your general knowledge of the game.
agreed
Seriously, Douby has epitomized inconsistency this year and last. I have not seen enough of Jones to make much of an assessment aside from the fact that he seems to play his ass off on defense. His offense - at least at this point and with very little data - seems a bit too "playground" for my liking.
Douby/Jones
The Kings have the talent; what they lack is confidence, attitude and a clear sense of their roles.
The other night the Kings got the Celtics down to five and House and Posey made back-to-back threes, because that is their role. The Kings still aren't sure what they are supposed to be doing and that hesitancy is costing them.
They play great for five minutes and then they slack off like they feel they've earned a rest. Or maybe it's just a lack of basketball IQ; they go away from what's working and suddenly don't resemble the team that was dominating their opponent five minutes earlier (it's happening tonight, too). Maybe it's just regression to the mean, but the Kings, in flashes, have shown they can compete with anyone. Bt they need to show that intensity and purpose for a whole game, and they haven't done it enough this year to get over the hump.
Yes, they have excuses, but they also have the talent to overcome. I want them to rise to the level of their ability, not wallow in their mediocrity. Maybe that's asking too much.
