Could They Win It all?

Despite being sold how great the NBA is, how the finest athletes on earth perform miracles for my hundred bucks and five hours of leisure, and what super-power their shoe will give me, there's only enough great players in the league for your average pick-up game. Face it, if you have more than a dozen teams in a league every team is going to have glaring vulnerabilities. The winner of anything is often those who over come their weaknesses, San Antonio being the a prime example. The Spurs aren't so much as great as they're the least terrible. Any NBA team this year is especially beatable in a playoff due to age and injury, and the western conference is particularly weak in this manner. The Kings cover their vulnerabilities well, enough with their starting five, yet still they have that one gaping hole: power forward. By trading Mike Bibby, any head from the hydra of mediocrity at PF, and a 1st round pick 2008, possibly '09, I think this lineup could make a serious contender out of THESE Kings, this year.

 C: Miller(13/8)
PF: J. O'Neal(16/7/2)
SF: Artest(19/6/4)
SG: Martin(25 ppg.
PG: Udrih(14/5)

In a far-gone time called Winning, there were  comparisons of the Pacers and Kings, in organization and roster. Bird to Adelman. O'Neal to Webber. Stojakovic to Reggie Miller. The benches, double-screens, the offensive philosophies. No point guard to no point guard. A quick roster scan will tell you Jermaine O'Neal's fake-it-til-you-make-it-trade-strategy statistics are better than all of Sacramento's power forwards. Getting O'Neal reunites Miller, O'Neal, Artest, fills the Reggie-role with Kevin Martin, and gives  the core players a point guard again. O'Neal is a better Chris Webber in my eyes, and a better fit. Artest plays the Stojakovic role with a little less offense and immaculate defense. The burden of rebounding comes off of Miller(who will never consistently bring down Ben Wallace-like numbers), and allows him to run the pick and pop with Udrih, Martin, and Artest. This team could see the conference championship with O'Neal and a benchwarmer playing over his head in the right stretches.

Notes:
You can see the love-child of Brad Miller and Vlade Divac In Spencer Hawes. He shoots, he passes, he doesn't rebound much. He's interesting because if the Kings go deep, his defense has to harden and play like he wants to hurt someone. Beno Udrih is the best point guard Sacramento's had in three years. It doesn't take much to be a hero in Sacramento, and offensive aggressiveness from the PG will do nicely. I see him sticking, and getting a 3-year deal neither side will regret.

And Indy Cornrows says WTF?
I don't know why Indy does this deal. They are in the 6th playoff spot right now. Making this deal hurts them in the short term, secures them only mid to late round 1st round picks (barring injuries) and gets them a little cap relief one year earlier than if they stand pat. I would think that the Pacers would be asking for closer to what Minny got for Garnett or for what Memphis has been asking for Gasol (and remember, both of those teams were non-playoff squads).

Haslem is not enough for Artest. I would rather retain Artest's Bird rights than trade him for Haslem.

Gooden is another hydra head. Watch any Cavs game, but don't count his performances against us. For crying out loud, we have made Theo Ratliff, Glen Davis and Sean Williams look like freakin' all stars this year. However, he is probably better than what we have and he's not too expensive, and if he came with expiring contract for Bibby I'd be OK with that.

Or the fact that Artest wanted more touches
than O'neal too. That was another issue.

J. O Neal Overrated
O'Neal's nagging injuries and propensity to choke in big games makes him a gamble not worth taking. Beside Indy would want Kevin Martin in any deal for Jermaine O'Neal. The Pacers, btw are playing quite well.

Artest is gasoline to O'Neal's fire. The trade would not work under any circumstances and the Pacers aren't stupid that they'd blindly give O'Neal away for an aging and declining point guard.

I like the Kings trading Mike Bibby for Drew Gooden,  Eric Snow (a defensive point guard that can inject more leadership to the team) and a 1st round pick.

Gooden does what none of the hydra can do: Rebound the basketball. Offensive rebounding and defensive rebounding. In my definition the hydras are Mikki Moore, Shareef Abdur-Rahim and Old Yeller.

My bet
is that the draft pick was the stalling point on last year's deal with the Cavs. It will be interesting to see if the Cavs are any more motivated this year.

My logic
for the Pacers making this trade is Bibby is still an upgrade over their current PG, gets rid of O'Neal who would rather not be there, and two 1st round picks in '08 and '09.  The fact that O'Neal and Artest hate each other is irrelevant.
Take a look at Shaq and Kobe, Pippen to Jordan...The list goes on. Winners win, and it heals a whole lotta problems too. Each would probably give up a left nut for a ring, and if there's a time to sneak in and get it, it's now and this line-up has a great opportunity to do so.
The 6th seed is akin to a Big Mac: It'll have to do, but don't be surprised when you've got bubblegut and you crap yourself in the end.
If Bibby guarantees he opts out and they gain his cap space PLUS an extra pick in the following years, hiow could you not do that?

A few observations on the weakness of the league:

Shaq IS washed up.

The Spurs only win every other year.

Boston has their David Robinson in KG(he's never gonna win without another big).

Up-tempo teams do NOT win championships(GSW, Suns, Mavs, etc).

The only team to fear over a seven game series is Detroit, as they'll probably demolish the east on the way to the title.

This does not change -
 - the fact that what you are offering Indy is way below market level when you look at the Garnett deal that did happen and the Gasol deal that did not happen. If Indy is truly interested in moving O'Neal they are going to want young players and/or draft picks and big cap relief. Sound familiar? It's exactly what we're looking to do, but nobody has bitten on Bibby. And O'Neal is far more valuable than Bibby. Put another way: if we had O'Neal right now would you trade him for Bibby and a mid to late 1st round pick?

IF
I had my star dogging it and 2 1st rounders? yeah.

If
he is dogging it why would we want him? By the way, he is averaging 16pt/7reb/3ast/2blk in 31 minutes and has played in 14 straight games after missing 5 with various leg injuries.

To be clear, I would take O'Neal for Bibby. I just can't for the life of me that the Pacers would go for it.

If Bibby guarantees to opt out,
Indiana has 13m in cap room at the end of the year, and an extra 1st rd. pick to deal or keep in '08 and/or '09, whatever it takes to make the deal.

Bibby opt out?
Why would Bibby ever agree to opt out of 13 mil guaranteed? If you have that Koolaid, Please, please, Pu-uh-uh-Lease give some to K9.

I'm not sure you can even get someone to guarantee that as part of a trade, sounds like you're treading in McHale/Joe Smith territory to me.

Look...
If ur name is either Donnie Walsh or Larry Bird... fine.

Unless you are one of those two, your opinion doesn't really matter.

O'Neal dogging it? Give me a break. Provide me some evidence that he's dogging yet.

This team couldn't compete with San Antonio, Dallas or Phoenix with or without O'Neal.

Nash, Parker and maybe even Jason Terry would have a field day against Beno Udrih, Mike Bibby, John Salmons.

Mike D'Antoni, Avery Johnson or Gregg Popovich are probably three elite coaches in he NBA.

Our opinions don't matter?
Well, I guess you are entitled to your opinion.

I guess the difference here, 18, is that I appreciate and respect the opinions of others even when I don't agree with them, including some of the opinions that you laid down right after you stated that our opinions don't matter.
