Retired Jerseys!

A link posted this afternoon concerning C-Webb got me to thinking quite a bit about the great Sac-town memories of yesteryear. Assuming C-Webb is going to get his jersey retired in Sacramento, what are the chances that Divac will one day have his jersey hanging up in Arco (or whatever the name of the new gym will be) one day as well? I have spent a long time this afternoon debating on whether or not I believe Divac deserves such an honor. From the viewpoint of on-court production, I do not believe he deserves such an honor. However, He was the catalyst for the resurgence of the Kings with his signing to the team and the key factor in returning the Kings to respectability. Needless to say, Im still on the fence about this issue.. I thought it would be interesting to get some takes on the topic from some of STR's finest!

Re: Retired Jerseys!
Yes to both, but I'd hope to see Vlade's before Webb's.

Re: Retired Jerseys!
I'd rather never see Webb's jersey retired. He didn't want to be here and cared more about his money than anything else. If it had been both Sac and Orl offering 90 mil he would have left in a heartbeat.

On Vlade he obviously signed here for the money. It's not like he left under acrimonious terms. That's the reality of the NBA, especially when you reach your end, and the cold stone reality that Vlade was at heart a LA guy. He deserves to have his jersey retired because of how well the team played with him on the court. His stats never compared to Webber, but unlike Vlade, the team never suffered without Webb on the court. That was rarely true of Vlade not being there.

Re: Retired Jerseys!
With all due respect, pookey, everybody signs for the money, except for those few that already have theirs and sign for less to play for a championship.

All Mitch did his last few years here was piss and moan about his salary and we retired his jersey (and rightfully so).

Webber was a cinch to have his jersey retired before his injury. He was known at that time on a national level as a player on a par with Duncan and Garnett. The question is did the injury abbreviate his career here to the point that his jersey should not hang in the rafters. On that point I am on the fence.

As far as Divac is concerned, his jersey only goes up if locker room presence and activity in the community counts. On his numbers alone you cannot hang his jersey.

Bottom line, if either/both of these guys had their jersey's raised into the rafters I would want to be in attendance and I would cheer loudly.

Re: Retired Jerseys!
He was near Garnett's and Duncan's level at times for sure. The problem he wasn't ever consistent at reaching it. Which is why he wasn't better than either.

Chris got alot more from the Kings than the Kings got from him all told. And that may be my opinion which puts me in the complete minority (or majority of 1 depending how you look at it.)

Re: Retired Jerseys!
Pookey, I posted Webb's numbers vs the other PF's mentioned. Id say he DID in fact become consistent enough to "match them", if not surpass them. Check it out in the Clinton post on the main page.

In regards to him getting more from the Kings than they got from him, Im not quite sure i follow. He was the BEST player that LED the Kings back to respectability. Id say we, as Kings fans, got a hell of a lot out of him!

Re: Retired Jerseys!
I'm not changing my opinion. You can have Webber in those years. I'll take Duncan. Or Garnett.

Re: Retired Jerseys!
I love Webb but I have to agree, Duncan and Garnett are/were superior players. They are much better defenders and don't stagnate an offense like Webb can do. He REQUIRES the ball to be effective and doesn't have much of a post game. Neither does Garnett mind you but his rebounding and shotblocking tilt the scales in his favor.

Don't get me wrong C-Webb was a phenomenal athlete but perhaps your sentimental ties have altered your judgement a bit.

Re: Retired Jerseys!
I don't know that anyone said that Webber was better than Duncan or KG (I didn't), only that he was on that same level. Prior to his injury Webber was 2nd, 3rd, 1st, 2nd and 2nd all NBA team. Duncan was 1st team all five of those years and KG went 3rd, 1st, 2nd, 2nd, 1st. Karl Malone was 1st, 2nd, 3rd, out and out over that period. The general consensus nationally was that Duncan, Garnett and Webber were all very close to each other from a talent and performance standpoint. And those "sentimental ties" can bind both ways. While those that loved C-Webb may overstate him, those that didn't have a tendency to understate him.

Re: Retired Jerseys!
Once again Section, your right on with this post! I stated above that Webber was ARGUABLY the best PF in the league for a few seasons....I still stand by that comment

Re: Retired Jerseys!
Yeah, but you can "argue" anything.  Doesn't make it remotely true.

Question is, at that time, if you could have traded C-Webb straight up for Duncan, Garnett or Malone, would you have?

I'd say the first two are no-brainers...since Malone was on the downside of his career he's the only one I have a second thought about.

Re: Retired Jerseys!
I never looked at "arguing" from that perspective before..Thanks for the knowledge...guy

Would I have traded Webber (A relatively young, HEALTHY, Webber) during anyone of those stated seasons for either Duncan or Garnett...One could Argue that maybe you would, maybe you wouldnt..Especially the 01' season where Webber had 521 MVP voter points (4th in the L) compared to Garnett's 151 points.. I guess during that year, for example, some voters felt that Webb was playing top tier hoops at the 4!

Re: Retired Jerseys!
HOw many times has KG finished in the top 5 compared to Webber though? You point out 1 season--I can point at least 5 of Garnett's that are better. That's the problem with Webb. Sure he was talented and all that but was he at the same level of Garnett in those years? Not really no.

Re: Retired Jerseys!
I could care less about MVP voter votes - no question Webb got many of those because he played so well in this system.  But who's to say Garnett, Malone or Duncan wouldn't have had a similar or better impact than C-Webb?

Tell you what, all three of those players were/are better defenders and just as good offensively. One area they were not as stellar is in the passing game, and that was a huge part of the Kings high post offense at the time.  If you make that argument, instead of just comparing their points and rebounds, I can almost see you making the case. Not quite, but almost.
