Artest to have surgery
Kings forward Ron Artest will need surgery for a chipped bone in his right elbow.
A timetable for the procedure and his return have yet to be determined.
Artest, who missed the first seven games this season while serving a suspension and one other to be with his sick daughter, sat out Friday's loss to the 76ers because of the injury.

Just when we were actually having fun this season, this happens :( So, what now? Do we now trade Mike for someone or keep him for the rest of the season because this would surely ruin Artest's trade value

Hope?
I don't think that this changes GP's mind set at all. If he can get something for Mike or Ron that will improve this team in the future he will make the deal, but he's not just going to give them away due to current circumstances.

Dude
Reasons to sign an NBA deal:
Team has a chance to win a title - uh, no.
I want to be THE MAN or Joe Johnson disease- maybe, but there's Kmart.
Show me the money - uh, no thank you.
Loyalty or the Garnett syndrome - I don't think so.
My hometown/favorite team growing up - NYC
I honestly can't picture a scenario where we resign him, unless we're willing to pony up close to max $, which I'm not.
So, the only way we keep him is if he decides not to opt out. I'm sorry, but unless he wigs out, goes into the stands and beats someone's dogs or something, he has to opt out. He's been mostly a good citizen for almost 2 years, and he's playing well. This is his chance at one last big payday.

Agreed, but...
Artest does not make it into a Knicks uniform without a trade or a sign and trade.

Not sure if this was directed at me, but
Regarding NYC, couldn't he sign a short MLE like contract, and hope to sign a bigger deal with Bird rights in a year or two? Not that that would be his smartest move, but if he really wanted to be a Knick...

Well...
If you are correct in calling Artest a good citizen (and if he continues in his current direction then you are, at least by NBA standards), then he is going to command a lot of interest this off season and too many high dollar offers to sign an MLE. Remember Webber wanted to go home or play in New York too, but in the end he signed for the most money, as do all players under the age of 33 that aren't just looking for that championship ring.

I agree
I don't know maybe that's the thing to do. It's tough to get talent like his. There's no arguing the impact he's had on this team, from the playoff push his 1st season, to playing near .500 ball this year with him in the lineup, even with the other injuries.
We're like Toronto with him and Minnesota without him.
