Shareef: Done

Shareef Abdur-Rahim had season-ending surgery on Friday.

He hadn't played much this year, partially because of the aching knee and partially because Mikki Moore has gotten all the starts at power forward. Most expected he was on the market. This surgery erases that thought.

Man, he's had a tough career. Best wishes to him.

Re: Shareef: Done
If we can show the injury occured prior to November 30th--which shouldn't be a problem--then according to inside hoops we should be able to.

http://www.insidehoops.com/nba-salary-exceptions.shtml

Disabled Player Exception. A team may replace a player who suffers a season-ending injury with one player making up to 50% of the injured player's current salary, up to a maximum of the average player salary. The Disabled Player Exception is available in the following circumstances:

(a) If the player is injured between July 1 and November 30 and is determined to be out for that season, the team has 45 days to use the Exception; or

(b) If the player is injured between December 1 and June 30 and is determined to be out for the subsequent season, the team has until the following October 1 to use the Exception.

What player did you have in mind that the kings could acquire?

Re: Shareef: Done
Don't know that I'd commit any long term money, but what about somebody like Dahntay Jones?

I'd rather see Kenny Thomas receive 40 mins a night.

Re: Shareef: Done
Not a huge loss, but it does create less depth at the center/power forward postion.  I'd also like to know how this affects the Kings' salary cap.

Re: Shareef: Done
Any loss of a player is devastating regardless of who it is. You hope the player can stay healthy throughout the year.

Re: Shareef: Done
No impact to the cap. As SavageBeast noted above, the Kings might be eligible for a injured-player exception, which would allow them to sign a replacement for up to about $3 million (which they current can't do because they're over the cap and already used the full MLE on Mikki Moore). I doubt they will do it, though, unless Earl Boykins is still hanging around and Beno's arm flies off tonight.

Re: Shareef: Done
Thanks a lot, TZ. Now I have to tune in tonight to see if Benbo's arm flies off.

Re: Shareef: Done
How about Nik Caner-Medley to a couple of 10 days?

Re: Shareef: Done
NCM is whom I was thinking too (see Les Bullez), but no 10-day contracts until January. It's why we had to wait on Justin Williams despite Mo Taylor's high times.
