Awhile back i speculated whether the kings would have been better off to tank. Clearly that question has been answered. I still feel thankful i didnt see the game last night. Watching ZAZA PACHULIA become an all star caliber C is too much. However between otis' and I back and forth's it got me thinking to a trade that was and is very controversial to this day. The Chris Webber trade. Whether youre for it or not I'd be curious to know how people think of it now that stuff has been settled.
First off I will point out that at the time i thought the trade was good for the kings. I knew chris' contract was an albatross and hard to move after his injury. Given that i felt he was overpaid when he was healthy i thought it was a smart thing to do.
I still think the kings wouldnt have made the playoffs with him. Brad Miller missed virtually the entire regular season after Chris left (he played 3 games all right after the trade before the seattle series if you remember) and Bobby Jackson of course wasnt there either. On a side note im still pissed Eddie House didnt get more PT in the seattle series. Still very pissed at rick for that. Oh well life moves on. I dont think the kings would have won the series but im angry rick didnt put his best guys out there.
In return i knew what the kings were getting. I liked corliss as i thought he had talents the kings could use. Even as limited as they seem. I'm still unsure of why rick didnt use him more in the year and half he had him. Maybe this season is proof why i guess. That is no reason to say rick was right. Anyway i'll never forget that Kenny Thomas took time to shit on the wonderful philly media in his departure. It was extremely funny and cartman'ish'. I always thought the kings benefitted from Brian Skinner's abilities during that season. In short i think the trade helped the kings during the short term and will benefit the kings in the long term.
Everybody is pissed off at Kenny and his play this season. I havent looked at this year vs last years numbers but i would bet everybody has dropped off from what they performed minus kevin martin. Yet another incredible argument for K-mart's MIP award. Kenny is a hard player to get behind as he can be a complete pain in the ass. He almost always evokes no sympathy from anyone. Kenny has abilities even if they seem non-existent this season. Trading skinner for potapenko and monya was clearly a money move. If i say so a smart move on the petries/maloofs part. Skinner wasnt playing much and potapenko/monya cost less over the long haul. The future with corliss is a good guess. I have a feeling he will walk to a team that can use him. Dont blame him either for that. It isnt corliss' fault he is in a rebuilding situation. At least he got a ring with Detroit. Ok, moving on.
Overall i think the benefit of trading a player who was no longer a superstar allowed the painful difficult and frustrating process of rebuilding. In many ways that process is somewhat stunted with the rapid incredible growth of kevin martin this season. The decision to keep Ronnie Price for the future will be a source of much debate amongst kings fan I do think. However there is no doubt that the trade of Chris Webber provided this team luxury tax relief over the long haul that as they dropped from contending status the Maloof's were no longer willing to pay. Would you want to pay 10 mil in luxury tax for a shitty ass 45 win team? No, I wouldnt either. I dont think chris ever had that much value around the league which is why the kings got exactly what they got. Yes, the poodle is difficult ,but how happy would anybody be if the kings were paying luxury tax for a potential 35-45 win team? From where i stand tough decisions dont include sentimental notions. Chris Webber believed that the kings could still win rings. I still think its funny that Charles Barkley went on that dumb delusion. They were nowhere near anything resembling a championship team. Trading Webber became yet another step in that process of the rebuilding.
I've had my say now its your turn. I'm sure its been debated already and i apologize for being late. I have better diary ideas down the road.
