Around the League: MVP Race

At the time of the posting, Dirk Nowitzki is leading the Mavs to a 59-11 mark.

Steve Nash and his Canadianness has Phoenix with a 53-17 mark and the Pacific Division title already.

Tim Duncan and his lack of facial expression has the Spurs finally playing defense like we know they can, and have killed their last two opponents by a combined margin of 500 points.

The Leastern Conferance, eh.

Lebron took half the season off, D-wade was hurt the other half, Shaq is fat, and everyone's favorite NBA blogger Gilberto is awesome and hardcore, but his team only has 38 wins to show for it.

A lot of talk is centering on the race between Dirk and Nash, former teammates and best pals who are leading the NBA's two best teams.

How can Dirk not win it? He is leading the NBA's best team, and making his teammates better.

How can Nash not win it?  He is leading the NBA's best offesnvie show, and showing the Jerks like Pat Riley that his famous 70-65 ballgames are a thing of the past.

My debate is this:  How CAN Nash win it again?

He is already two time defending NBA MVP.  In my opinion, not rightfully either time.  However, his numbers this year are better than during his two MVP years.

But, making him a three-time MVP?  Back to back to back?

Three time MVP's in a row:  Bill Russell (11 rings), Wilt Chamberlain (2 Rings) and Larry Bird (3 Rings).

Some three time total MVP's are the above three, Kareem, MJ, Magic.

What seperates the above names from Nash is winning Championships.  No doubt Nash makes his teammates better, but does he win?  Back to back Western Conferance finals appearances look good, but where is the finals trip?  Where is the ring?

One time MVP's dont have as much pressure to preform.  Do you know guys like Karl Malone and Kevin Garnett?  And I am not including Shaq in this, because he has 4 rings, and has gotten screwed more than a few times.

I truly lay hate upon Ric Bucher for a quiet little debate in an ESPN NBA show two years ago, when he went out on a limb and said his MVP vote would go Nash for leading the NBA's best offense.  Unfortunately, the rest of the Sportwriter Sheep hopped on the bandwagon, and then were stuck last year when his numbers were better without Amare.

What do they do this year?  His numbers are even better than the first two MVP years, and he has been flirting with that 20 ppg, 50%/40%/90% mark only Mr Bird has accomplished.

While we are mired in an unfortunately long season, I really dont want icing on the cake to be another Nash MVP.

Re: Around the League: MVP Race
I'm obviously on the minority on this. I felt Nash should have gotten the MVP 2 years ago & Kobe last season. But thats just a personal opinion. I dont feel Shaq did more for the Heat 2 seasons ago than nash did. Still dont.

Re: Around the League: MVP Race
My problem is that Shaq is the most dominating player of this era.  He is why, when the NBA was in the dark ages with low scoring, the NBA instituted a zone defense to slow him down.

For him to have only one regular season MVP even though he has 4 rings is a joke.  Im not saying Shaq is my lord and savior, but you have to give credit where credit is due.

Nash benefitted from joining a system that allowed him to play to his strengths (passing, shooting, running) and ignore his weaknesses (defense).

Shaq has been a dominating force everywhere he has been.

Re: Around the League: MVP Race
I will admit i dont like shaq. I really dont like the guy. I lost respect for him when dennis rodman pushed him around down the stretch in a few ECF games in 1996.

That being said find me a year where Shaq got screwed out of a MVP award. Other than 2005. ,seriously. You talk about how nash is benefitial to a system that took advantage of what he does & ignores what he doesnt do. But so does Miami. It's not like Shaq goes out & dominates anybody defensively. Since when has Shaq ever led a team to a finals berth by himself? Didnt he play with Penny Hardaway Nick Van Exel Eddie Jones Kobe Bryant and now Dwyane Wade?

Shareef Abdur Rahim challenged him for godsakes. He's lazy and what's worse he's breaking down. Sure he looks dominate but he's also out east. Everyone is smaller out there. I'm pretty sure Zach Randolph could get traded to an eastern team play 80 games a year & still average 25 & 15. Randolph is overrated. Size is still very much @ a premium in the eastern conference. Even with bosh howard & such.

I know we disagree about shaq chris. I just dont think he's that 'dominate'. I also doubt the league changed the rules to a zone to stop him. Zones havent stopped shaq one bit. Age has.

Re: Around the League: MVP Race
What r u talking about? Shaq is definitely one of the most dominant player in the league. He led the Lakers to three championship. He led Miami to a 59-23 record when his best player was 2nd year stud and a bunch of has beens and a coach under scrutiny.

I would have taken Shaq (in their prime) over a combo of C-Webb (in his prime) , Vlade (in his prime), Brad (in his prime) along with Bibby, Peja and Christie.

I wish for the Greg Oden Era.

Re: Around the League: MVP Race
Obviously you like shaq and obviously I dont. Some of those 'has-beens' included a sometimes healthy Alonzo Mourning, Eddie Jones, Damon Jones, Udonis Haslem and maybe im forgetting somebody. Scrubs those guys are not. Last i checked Wade was going to be a star. Anybody who saw that nawlinz/miami series could see that. As far as SVG what did he do to get fired again? He wasnt pat riley cuz thats who shaq wanted. I'm so glad that Shaq was the guy who led miami to that ring last year. It really settles our debate doesnt it.

Re: Around the League: MVP Race
SVG just stepped down to spend time with his family... an oddly suspicious move especially after he led an undermanned heat team w/o shaq deep into the playoffs the year before.  Although on the bright side we may have Ron Jeremy err SVG coaching our team come next year.

BTW how could you forget Sacramento's own white chocolate as a has been.  Nothing like watching him cross the half court line and feeling like he can hit from there, those were always the hardest shots to watch because he'd do it when we would have the momentum and you're like no, no, no, YES!!! As like a blind squirrel he would find an occasional nut.

Re: Around the League: MVP Race
The bottom line remains that Shaq is the most physically dominating player of this era.

Last years title run had a lot to do with Wade, but it also had a lot to do with Bennet Salvatore, Dick Bavetta, etc.

Wade shot 97 free throws in that series.  Anyone can score a ton of points if you average 15 free throws a game.

Which makes Shaq look all the better, because he has kept scoring points despite the fact that he cant hit a free throw to save his life.

Re: Around the League: MVP Race
I think Nash should have won it the last two years and is even more deserving this year. Sure, Kobe is a great 1 on 1 player - the best in fact. But, he is just beginning to make people around him better. (I'm not a Kobe-hater, BTW. I respect the guy because he comes to play on BOTH sides of the court every night.) I just think that Nash's total game sets him apart from every other player in the league, including Kobe and Dirk.

But, hey, Nash, Kobe, Dirk - not really a bad choice there, huh? It certainly wouldn't be outrageous if any one of these guys wins.  Voting is going to be very close. I think Nash should win, but, if I were betting, I think Dirk wins it with Nash second, and Kobe third.

Re: Around the League: MVP Race
Also kusian if you remember how young phoenix was 2 years ago? That wasnt exactly a team filled with youth that Shaq had. Riley may be a punk & a jerkoff but he's no fool. Young players dont do as well around Shaq as veterans do.

Re: Around the League: MVP Race
Kobe drives me nuts because he shows what he can do, but he always has some agenda at the expense of the team.

Re: Around the League: MVP Race
I'm assuming you lump that recent 50 pt streak under kobe's 'agenda' as well.

Re: Around the League: MVP Race
He was putt, putt, putt until he was labeled dirty.  Even Hippie Phil said that the only reason he was scoring like that was to show everyone up for his dirty label.

Re: Around the League: MVP Race
Even if 'Hippie Phil' also questioned the sentiment repeatedly himself? Also didnt 'hippie phil' ask kobe to score more? I do remember that personal streak breaking a 7 game losing streak. Also kobe shot poorly tue vs memphis & they lost barely. They need his offense badly. As i say kobe isnt appreciated or flat on hated on. It dont matter. 1 player 1 game for the rest of your life im taking kobe. Yall wanna believe somebody better go right ahead.

Re: Around the League: MVP Race
Kobe is pretty clearly the best player in basketball right now.  And if you ask who is most necessary to a team's chances of winning, you'd have to go with Kobe or Nash I think.

The whole Kobe thing is weird. His team would stink without him, but he doesn't make the rest of his team noticeably better, just throws them on his back and carries them for the most part.

What the hell is the criteria for this award anyways?

Re: Around the League: MVP Race
I always thought record has a lot to do with it, but it didn't last year.  And I thought it would go to who was the best player, which could have easily been Kobe or the King last year.

Re: Around the League: MVP Race
thats a good question otis...for once we agree on something

Let me quote marc stein from the daily dish that i heard yesterday:

  1. usually a MVP winner has to be on a winning team and 50+ @ that....no MVP has been on a team that didnt win 50+ since moses malone in 1982 (the rockets were 40-42)
  2. that your stats merit some kind of indication that youre doing things that no other player around the league can do
  3. that your teammates show some kind of improvement that makes you seem more valuable in your contribution

he said the stuff varies but that was the gist of it pretty much....

Re: Around the League: MVP Race
Dirk or Duncan, though if you voted for Nash the last two years, it'd be silly not to vote for him again because he has been even better as has his team.

My ballot:

  1. Dirk
  2. Duncan
  3. LBJ (his team could win the East, and he has no help)
  4. Kobe
  5. Garnett
  6. Nash
  7. Gilbert
  8. Bosh
  9. Wade
  10. Kenny Thomas

Re: Around the League: MVP Race
I would go along these lines:

  1.  Dirkus
  2.  Duncan
  3.  Nash
  4.  Hibachi (does anyone not love this guy?)
  5.  Employee Number 24
  6.  Bosh
  7.  Kevin "Im not a leader" Garnett
  8.  LeBron "Im turing it on because everyone knows im loafing it" James
  9.  Shaq
  10. Pacman Jones

Re: Around the League: MVP Race
The thing with LBJ... even if was loafing it, he was still better than just about everyone in the league, save Dirk, Wade, Yao, maybe Nash.

Re: Around the League: MVP Race
He nearly fell into Vince territory.

The one thing I could not get over was reading what seemed like 100 articles from everyone imaginable about how he is playing like he does not care.

And then he magically shows up and starts playing like we all know he can.  He has all the talent to average a triple double.  It's just a matter of if the Global Icon cares.

Re: Around the League: MVP Race
Pacman above Kenny? Are you mad?! When Kenny makes it rain he leaves yellow snow near hydrants. Top that!
He's pesky I tell ya.
