Around the League: Coach of the Year

Musselman is a terrible coach.  We can all pretty much agree on that.  I cant blame him 100%, but I can lay down a lot at his feet.

However, there are other teams in the league, and some with really good coaches.  Which makes me jealous, but I digress...

Having no guidelines as to what would qualify someone as a Coach of the Year candidate, here are some criteria that has been used before:

  1.  Best Record
  2.  Most Improvement
  3.  Overcome the most adversity
  4.  Team Unity
Some or all of those have been used at one point or another in determining Coach of the year Candidates.  Who stands out this year?
  1.  Jerry Sloan - He has been in the league forever, and never won this award.  This year, he has the Jazz back on pace to make the playoffs for the first time since John Stockton was playing.  He is also the League's longest tenured coach in one of its smallest markets.  My reason for placing him as a frontrunner is the fact that Utah still has no "superstar" players, but is winning and could possibly have homcourt advantage in the first round of the playoffs.  He is getting the most out of the talent that he does have.
  2.  Sam Mitchell - Ok, I can not believe that I am really typing this, because I really thought last year made him look like a disaster on wheels.  However, his hard-nosed approach has caught on, and with a smart GM like Colangelo finally making smart moves, the Raptors are going to win the Atlantic Division.  Having Chris Bosh helps, but you have to get him to buy into it, which he does, and that is why they are winning.
  3.  Eddie Jordan - Homer Pick.  I liked Jordan while he was coaching here, and he is the brains behind the Nets two Finals runs earlier this decade.  He has the Bullets slated to win the Southeast division, and has started and quelled a public Gilbert Arena's fued that got agent 0 back on track.  He kept the Bullets winning despite the fact that Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison have both missed games.  Luck had a lot to do with it thanks to Oralndo backsliding and Miami's injury bug, but with the heat Charging, the Bullets keep winning.
  4.  Avery Johnson - Has the best team in the league.  Just like he did most of last year.  It kind of takes the luster off, becasue we already know he has a ton of talent and a ton of respect in the Locker room.  Plus he was last year's winner.
  5.  Mike D'Antoni - Phoenix is proving they can win while playing fast.  Do you remember Sacramento at the turn of the century, playing fast and leading the league in scoring?  They always got killed by national media who said you cant play like that.  Now Phoenix?  They are everyone's favorite, led by cuddly Canadian Steve Nash.  Im not buying Phoenix, but D'Antoni put in a system, it works, and they are winning.
Honorable mention in no particular order:

Pop-Spurs
Saunders-Detroit
Nellie-GS
JVG-Houston

Re: Around the League: Coach of the Year
Eddie Jordan... the brain behind the Nets? Please, that has been so overblown. The wheel behind the Nets is Kidd and its the Wizards not the Bullets, that was last decade. The Nets were a solid defensive team and I don't think Eddie Jordan was that.
I wish for the Greg Oden Era.

Eddie coaches the Zards. Lawrence Frank coaches the Nets, and he shouldn't sniff this year's award.

Or kudos for being a businessman sensitive to an extremely important issue in his team's community.

Re: Around the League: Coach of the Year
How does a name contribute to a homicide rate of a city? How does changing it provide sympathy? Especially when it was the same name for 30 years.

Maybe there is some kid out there that shot someone else over the name. I doubt it though.

Re: Around the League: Coach of the Year
Who said it contributes to a homicide rate? It's a sensitivity issue for people in a city that is always among the worst for gun-related crimes in the U.S.

Whether you think it's a case of the PC police overreacting, Abe Pollin figured it was important enough to his community that he changed it.

Wizards beats the heck out of Bullets anyways.

It was the PC police overreacting. Yes ,DC has a terrible crime rate particularily gun-related crimes as you point out. But changing the name of a basketball team just isnt worth even relating to that issue. If Abe Pollin wanted to make a difference he would dedicate his billions to fighting the NRA or something along those lines. Pollin or Wes Unseld thought Ike Austin was better than Ben Wallace too. I didnt just make it up. Btw the wizards is a stupid F!@#$%^ name for any team. Why not just call them the washington harry potter's.

Re: Around the League: Coach of the Year
I dont know every problem or most or all of the problems in DC. I know the 'bullets' name contributes to nothing in real life problems.

I doubt you have any idea what Abe Pollin does or does not do with his money. If I had to hazard a guess, I'm sure Abe Pollin's charitable contributions make yours look rather meager.

If you lived in DC and you were or knew someone who was a victim of a gun crime, you might think differently.

And the nickname "Bullets" is lame anyways...

Re: Around the League: Coach of the Year
I happen to think the name 'wizards' is lame. Who cares how pollin makes his money? I dont i just know he got it.

I would think differently about a name if i knew someone who was a victim of a gun crime? NO id be angry that the person died of a gun crime. Not about a name of a sports team sheesh.

OK OTIS IF YOU WANNA GET SERIOUS ABOUT THIS FINE. I'm gonna link something that makes me sick. I'm just glad it isnt in california but rather the great state of texas.

Re: Around the League: Coach of the Year
On the Wizards/Bullets, I think it had a lot to do with Pollin's status in DC.  He's much more than just the Wizards owner in this area, and his charitable contributions and philanthropy probably encouraged him to want to change the name.

It is dumb PCness, but it didn't feel so dumb at the time.  Now, it just looks silly.

And as for nominating Eddie Jordan for a coach of the year, I hope that was just some sick joke.

Re: Around the League: Coach of the Year
Prada i find it interesting you say that. I read something once about pollin written about david aldridge. Aldridge pointed out that despite, his detractors, his long standing status as owner (he's owned the team since its inception in 1964 for those who arent aware) he does things he feels are in the best interests of his team. Pollin is a classic owner in every sense. A case study of his ownership should be completed by somebody in the know.

Re: Around the League: Coach of the Year
once again, i will have to defend my guy muss.  he is not a bad coach.  let's take a look at what he has done as a head coach with two teams:

warriors:  got them to play hard, with a young team and almost got them to the playoffs twice.  he got fired so a local boy (montgomery) could do worse with the same team.

kings:  inherited a roster full of INDIVIDUAL good talent, but one that doesn't mesh well as a team.  i am not saying he is totally out of the scope of blame, however, it doesn't help when no one wants to work together as a team.  and no that is not his fault, they were like that before.  and no if adelman was here they would be better.  remember all of you adelman fans, he was the coach of the warriors before muss and they did worse with adelman than with muss.  again, i stress individual talent.  yes, adelman took the kings to the playoffs with the same roster last year, but let's get real.  artest hadn't played in a year, and was on his best behavior.  and let us not forget, that they sucked before he got there.  he brought a tough nosed attitude to he team, and it didn't hurt that bonzi was unstoppable in the playoffs.  that was not adelman's doing.  that was one guy who was reborn (until this year when he fell back to his old habits) and the other realizing he could get a fat contract from someone, because his was up, so he better do something to attract attention.

i got a chance to go to the spurs/kings game a few weeks back and you can totally tell the difference in team work.  why?  because each buy into the team concept.  they pass the ball and don't take ill-advised shots.  also, this is a team full of good guys.  and the good guys are the stars of the team, which makes their leadership roles that much more important.

who is the leader on the kings?  artest? bibby?  martin?  can someone tell me?  up until recently, when THE PLAYERS realized they had no shot at the playoffs and started planning their vacations, Muss had the team playing hard.

it isn't Muss's fault that bibby couldn't hit his ass with a tennis racket earlier in the year.  how many games did that cost us?  or the miller has been non-existant ALL YEAR.  and guess what folks, he contract keeps getting fatter the more useless he becomes.  he has a malcontent as the small forward.  kevin martin shows flashes of brilliance at, but then cowers over in the corner and doesn't demand the ball.

this team has no chemistry, and certainly no leader.  and guess what, that is Petrie's job, not muss's.  nobody wants to blame Petrie.  i love the guy too, but he hasn't exactly brought in the best talent to mesh together.

there are many problems, all of which with one solution:  blow it up, all of it.  and if you want to blow out muss, fine, but who will you replace him with?  i say get rid of everyone, except for the young talent, martin, garcia, price, etc.  start over.  work it through the draft.  suck for a couple of years and rebuild totally.  not on the run.

Re: Around the League: Coach of the Year
Your point about the roster is valid. No one with any sense should dispute that. The fact is that this team as a whole really doesnt respond to musselman. Young or Older players. That doesnt bode well for a guys ability to reach his younger players while he cant reach his older 1's either. The point is simple. If he could establish himself as a guy who brings a tangible presence (im not sure he does) then i would agree. If his greatest asset as a coach  is to point out that the kings are better when mike bibby hits his shots then he probably is a lil mismatched. I again repeat not all of this is his fault. That doesnt mean that not firing him should be accepted either. He should be fired. He's done a piss poor job as a coach (regardless of what his players are doing...adjustments PT on the court is the best way to evaluate him...what happened to all the ppl who said artest was a franchise player in october? suddenly he became too awful to handle?) and that is ultimately what counts. No more no less.

Re: Around the League: Coach of the Year
I'd respond more to this, but I broke my hand playing ball, and typing with one hand sucks.

Yea, in hindsight, Eddie Jordan = bad choice.  However, he was the lead assistant to Byron Scott in NJ the two years they went to the finals.  NJ played small ball, and scored a lot.  The East those years looked like the East this year:  a disaster.

Once he left, NJ's offense bogged down, and Scott was mutinied and fired.

He did a decent job so far this year, keeping them in the lead of the Southeast division, until everyone and their mothers got hurt.

Bottom line, Sloan deserves it.
