Preliminary Coach Candidate List Revealed

As Chris the Greek wrote in a diary, Geoff Petrie has released a list of seven candidates the Kings will interview for the head coaching vacancy.

Here's the preliminary list:

Brian Shaw, Lakers assistant
Kurt Rambis, Lakers assistant
Tom Thibodeau, Rockets assistant
Stan Van Gundy, former Heat coach
Reggie Theus, New Mexico State coach
Scott Brooks, Kings assistant
Elston Turner, former Kings assistant

As Chris indicated, Turner's presence shows Petrie's power in this decision-making process. Turner loudly criticized the Maloofs last summer because of comments to owners made regarding the lack of defensive fortitude the Kings showed under Rick Adelman.

I expect this list to change as the playoffs progress, though I suspect Petrie would like to make a decision before May ends. Of the assistants still coaching, Detroit's Terry Porter, New Jersey's Bill Cartwright, San Antonio's P.J. Carlesimo, and Phoenix's Marc Iavaroni are the ones I'd expect could join the list.

Interesting omissions:

  • John Whisenant, which is another sign Petrie is in control here.
  • Rick Carlisle.
  • Mario Elie, who must not have interviewed well last summer.
The Bee's Sam Amick added Indiana assistant Chuck Person to the list, as well, and notes that every single candidate except Van Gundy shares two characteristics: They are in their 40s, and they were NBA players.

The great thing about this list: I don't break into hives imagining any of these guys on the Sacramento sideline. That's a good thing.

Re: Preliminary Coach Candidate List Revealed
that list doesn' really "Wow" me.  as for the left outs, Whisenant i could care less about.  to me he is like a college coach, and how many of them have succeeded?  remember pitino in boston?  you know the guy of would play chauncy billups.

carlisle doesn't exactly impress me either.  yeah he might get them to the playoffs, but i don't see him taking this team too far.

now elie i am disappointed about.  if we are going to hire a former player then we should get a tough bad ass, like elie.  someone who people remember played in this league and can talk to "todays" player.

i know i am in the minority on this one, but i don't think we should bring back any of the assistants.  this team needs to clean house and keeping old baggage around will not accomplish that.  the entire staff needs to be new and most of the roster needs to be changed.  besides, if we are going to get somebody worth anything to coach our team, we need someone who is going to want to do it his way.  not continue what has failed in the past.

Re: Preliminary Coach Candidate List Revealed
First off Chauncey Billups took awhile to develop. Secondly the list is an announcement of who has power (thankfully petrie thank you thank you thank you god). As i noted in my comments of Chris' diary I'm glad to see ET getting an interview. I would like to see him getting an assistant job under Brooks if that was the case. He's been in the league players respect him (if nothing else) and he knows more than maybe anybody realized. He learned alot from Rick, which of course in my view is always a good thing, and that could help Brooks,or whomever Petrie selects, in the process of developing what could be an interesting team to start the season.

Re: Preliminary Coach Candidate List Revealed
"(He) just calls us up and keeps us up to date," Gavin Maloof said from Las Vegas. "He's really out in front of the search. ... There's a lot of talent, a lot of good coaches. But of course there's several teams looking and a good coach is hard to find, but we believe there's a lot of talent out there. ... We shouldn't have a problem finding a good quality person."

Since my previous comment was relief I guess I'll expand (for the last time) on it.

  1. Glad to see there is no retreads, like Carlisle or  JEFF Van Gundy (neither of whom are bad coaches I might add) if only because I think that will not bring the best out of their coaching abilities. Mostly I think they're too locked into the styles they play. I am VERY glad to see Whisenant not getting anything near this interview. I know this will seem odd but I'm also glad Elie isn't either. I just dont have a good feeling , that having championship rings among other things, gives you an in with the players.

  2. I hope that by if some chance, Elston Turner doesn't knock the interview outta the park (excuse the baseball cliche), he ends up being a lead assistant. I wonder if this is out of pure loyalty to Rick in some way. Probably not, but you never know. Either way he's the guy I think would be the best candidate for the job.

  3. If not ET, I really am warming up to the idea that Scott Brooks could be an excellent candidate. If he is a better candidate than ET, which of course I'm not sure of either way, I'm more than ready to accept he'd be an excellent lead assistant to ET regardless. Usually I think the head coach having the automony to pick their assistants is a good idea but it's very different when you have a veteran bench coach like Rick Adelman doing it.

  4. The most interesting part to me is that the entire field, sans Van Gundy, is either a young & up coming coach (like theus) or assistants (or have been). I like that Petrie is looking for a smarter (cheaper?) way to find a head coach. I'm glad that SVG is on the list. He's the only guy on that list with proven abilities as a head man. This seems to be a list of Geoff Petrie's.

  5. Petrie's indication of changing coaches when necessary (there have been only 4 up till now and we'll see a year from now on the 5th) I think it stands to reason he'll have a good shot at getting it right. The process is seemingly having a much better feel to it, from my perspective of course, than last year. Even if I admit I didnt pay much attention after Rick got fired, I've just gleamed this from what TZ, Amick, Voisin and Scoop have written since.

  6. The great thing about this list: I don't break into hives imagining any of these guys on the Sacramento sideline. That's a good thing.

Amen.

Re: Preliminary Coach Candidate List Revealed
This team has got to establish a defensive identity, even with youth movement or not.

Hire Stan Van Gundy and get some versatile players around him.

I wish for the Greg Oden Era here in Sacramento.

Re: Preliminary Coach Candidate List Revealed
Am I the only one who hates Brian Shaw here? C'mon SR back me up. I don't care how good of a coach he might be, he is firmly entrenched with the enemy. Remember, Shaw to Shaq for the alley-oop dunk? Remember? He KILLED us.

On a different note, I also am not enamored with Elie and am happy he is not on this list. If you have heard him speak he just isn't articulate enough to make you think he has a whole lot of intelligence, IMHO.

Re: Preliminary Coach Candidate List Revealed
I don't care for Shaw. And yes I remember the Shaw-Shaq redemption (as stupid as that is). I think Petrie is being transparent in hiring whom he think may be the best candidates.

To respond to kingme's assertion this team needs to have a defensive identity well...........This team needs to have a head coach with an idea of what he wants to do. On either end of the court.

Re: Preliminary Coach Candidate List Revealed
they need the players who have the ability to play a little defense.  bibby tried harder this year, he just can't play it.  besides artest, who can on this team?
