Amick: Waiting on Porter

Back to the real world today.

In his Bee blog, Sam Amick says the Kings are high on Terry Porter, former Kings assistant and current Detroit bench coach:

... it's Detroit assistant Terry Porter whose name I'm hearing above the others at this point. Porter, to review, was part of the Portland team that went to the NBA Finals twice when Petrie was the Blazers' senior vice president of basketball operations. Then, of course, the two-time All-Star followed his 17-year playing career with one season as a Kings assistant (2002-03) before heading to Milwaukee for his first head coaching job. [...] His reputation is stellar, his background with Petrie deep.

The longer this drags out, the better the chances are we can throw out the current list. Stan Van Gundy is looking like a lock in Indiana, and Jeff Van Gundy seems rather adamant about not coaching next season. The final interview of the first bunch takes place this morning.

Porter is offensive-minded and a player's guy... a la Rick Adelman. We'll see.

Re: Amick: Waiting on Porter
I think TP (and i gotta give Koz credit this for saying this on air a couple days ago) will land here as the next head coach. I've now heard Koz (who by & large is a company bullpucky kind of guy but does say accurate things too) and seen Amick write that. It's looking like TP will get a chance to prove that first season coaching the bucks into the big dance wasn't a fluke.

Hank (Sacramento): Do you think the Maloofs are finished making basketball decisions and will let Petrie get back to choosing who should coach, who to draft, who to trade, etc.?

Marc Stein: Totally finished? Owners are never finished making decisions. But in general? Yup. It's Petrie's show again.

That's very interesting during the playoffs he even printed that. We've gone round and round about that but when Stein writes stuff like that he really believes it. And fans who read espn (lets face it there is alot of them who do) some will think he's accurate.

Re: Amick: Waiting on Porter
I can't imagine finding a more perfect candidate than Porter amongst the current frontrunners.  If he gets the job, it will really soften the blow of the general awfulness of the roster he'll be inheriting.

Re: Amick: Waiting on Porter
He seems a man of stellar character--Boys and Girls Club Hall of Fame, family man--no one seems to have a bad thing to say about him; and he's played for Riley, Adelman, Saunders, and Popovich--that's a pretty good mix of offensive and defensive education.  Plus, he isn't afriad to speak his mind; after he was let go from the Bucks, he said, "Yeah I'm bitter about it. After they loaded the team up I deserved a shot to coach them." A little honesty at the after game press conference will be a nice change from the fluff Musselman spewed after we had to watch his gnomish scowl all game long.

Terrific take.

Re: Amick: Waiting on Porter
I've mentioned it before so I'll do it directly here. Much will be made of how bad the Bucks was the 2nd season TP coached them. Of course that was without TJ ford. I think Ford being healthy has proven he makes teams better with his speed and leadership. A few days ago TZ talked about on fanhouse the 'it' factor Iavaroni has in his view. In mine Ford has the same kind of 'it' factor that makes players so hard to quantify yet identifiable nonetheless.

That quote and take is a very accurate take of what happened with TP's deparature. Kudo's nyc.

Re: Amick: Waiting on Porter
I like that quote.  Shows some pride.  I can't tell you how I sick I got of Musselman and his assistants coming on the radio/TV after a loss and explaining that their opponent was just so darn good that the Kings couldn't do anything about it, oh well.  Show a little bit of pride in yourself, man!

Re: Amick: Waiting on Porter
It looks like Stan n Van Gundy isnt a mortal lock in Indiana. Maybe someone else gave him a better offer?
