Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

Jeff Van Gundy?

He's apparently out in Houston, possibly due to his own wishes. The New York Post says he's walking away from coaching for a while, while ESPN has him seeing the writing on the wall and fleeing Houston as the franchise transitions from Carroll Dawson to economist Daryl Morey at GM.

Big name? Check. Defensive minded? Check. Championship caliber? Check. If he does leave, it would be highly surprising if the Maloofs didn't call him.

Re: Jeff Van Gundy?
Stan is the better option than Jeff.
I wish for the Greg Oden Era.

Re: Jeff Van Gundy?
I agree too. Jeff is too inflexible for my liking.

Re: Jeff Van Gundy?
what background do we have on stan?  he won with shaq and wade.  how does that make him qualified for sac?  what players do we have here that would make you think he could do any better here?  in fact when he left, i believe the heat were reeling and riley came in and won the whole thing.

Re: Jeff Van Gundy?
I thought what he did in his first season without shaq was very revealing nba. Look in the brooks post to see what kingme wrote. He wrote it down very well.

Re: Jeff Van Gundy?
i'll have to find it.  i am just freaking frustrated that the names that have been floated out there are either somebody else's retreads or unproven.  this sucks.

It often does dude. Which is why I personally(and it took me 6 and half years) to appreciate RA so much. NO RESPONSES TO THAT PART PLEASE!

Re: Jeff Van Gundy?
Do you think Morey will do a good job of GM'ing TZ?

It seems to me that with all the talk about Moneyball there are some things often forgotten in that whole scenario that are still playing out for the a's. Likewise I wonder if that will have a similar effect to the rockets. That will be something worth following closely.

Re: Jeff Van Gundy?
I like the idea of Morey, as a numbers guy myself. It remains to be seen how he'll work in an industry where quantification is both much less easy than baseball and also looked down upon more strongly. I think the Battier for Gay was a good one, though, considering the team was looking to compete now and Battier is one of the best defenders in the league.

Re: Jeff Van Gundy?
I think the trade, until recently, was widely praised. If the rox had gone to the WCF, I doubt it would ever be thought of as bad.

Re: Jeff Van Gundy?
I don't know how anyone can think of it as bad.  The Rockets got one of the "glue" guys of the league and a proven defender who can also hit the outside shot.  The Rockets obviously want to win in the next 4-5 years before they waste the prime of McGrady and Yao.  It's a smart goal to have.  The Lakers have foolishly rebuilded around the wrong guys and have already wasted three years of Kobe's prime.  The Rockets are headed in the right direction; I just don't think JVG is the right coach for that squad.

Re: Jeff Van Gundy?
I dont get it either bball. I can't remember where I read that. If i did i'd show you the link to it. That being said the rox needed battier to get to the playoffs. I'm not sure gay, for all his contributions in memphis, would have helped them do that.

Re: Jeff Van Gundy?
I think Gay is a great player but there's no way the Rockets continue to win games with him in the line-up instead of Battier whenever McGrady or Yao was out.  The Rockets played a string of games without McGrady (missed 11) or Yao (missed 34) but Battier played all 82 games and really made up for the loss whenever one (or both) wasn't in the line-up.  I really don't think Gay, as a rookie, would have been able to do that.

Honestly if you look back at the offseason moves from 2006 it's gotta be in the top 3.

Re: Jeff Van Gundy?
A thought just occurred to me (after too many hours of thinking about it). If there is a need for an ex-player then how does JVG qualify? Musselman, like JVG, played college ball but not NBA ball. While JVG is effective it's also true he's coached teams with players who fit more or less into his preferred style of coaching. I guess we'll see what priority exists moving forward with the candidates that are chosen.
