Reggie Theus to Be Kings New Head Coach

The rumors are now turning into news, as tonight, sports media both national and local are going with the story that former Kings star Reggie Theus has beaten out assistant Scott Brooks, and former Laker Brian Shaw, gaining the mission to guide Kevin Martin, Ron Artest and Kenny Thomas back into the playoffs after a one-year absence.

Theus, who coached New Mexico State to a 25-9 record this year, will be leaving the college ranks and heading for the NBA sidelines to inherit a team that managed only 33 wins under Coach Musselman last season.

From ESPN's Andy Katz: Former King Theus will be named Kings next coach

The Sacramento Kings will name Theus their next coach later Tuesday night, multiple sources told ESPN.com Tuesday night. A news conference will follow on Wednesday. ESPN.com has learned that Theus will get a three-year deal, worth an estimated $6 million.

The Sacramento Bee has also confirmed the hiring saying "The Kings announced late Tuesday afternoon they have reached an agreement."

Also of note, the Bee says talks with Larry Brown failed to progress, after those rumors surfaced last week.

TZ will be following the story as it progresses...

Re: Reggie Theus to Be Kings New Head Coach
I'm bothered by this i really am. I don't feel Brooks was seriously considered. I really don't. I want to know the entire process of how the coaching search went. The organization owes that to us at least.

My gut feeling is the entire family liked Theus having more knowledge than of Brooks or Shaw. Which is a shame because I'd much rather have Brooks and Shaw in that order. Ugh I have a terrible feeling about this I really do. I hope Reggie turns out to be a stud for our sake. Which in turn could turn things worse or better. Who knows. Ugh.

Re: Reggie Theus to Be Kings New Head Coach
It will be interesting to see if either Theus or Mike Woodson can win more games as a coach next year then they did when they played in the backcourt together...

LOL
That would be great if Theus did.

Well T.R. Dunn left Sacramento to be an assistant under Adelman in Houston.

Re: Reggie Theus to Be Kings New Head Coach
Dare i say it..... Im quite pleased with the decision. Granted, Theus does not have the experience coaching at the "next" level as Shaw and Brooks do but I feel that can work to the Kings (and the City's ) advantage. To be honest, our boys dont have the talent/athleticism to be instant contenders by the fate of "experienced" coaching alone! Theus is an eccentric figure who if nothing else will bring excitement back to Arco.Face it, those of us who have attended games during the post Webber/J Dub years will easily tell you that the #1 NBA fans slogan often awarded to Sacramento is grossly overrated in recent years. Theus will bring instant authentic energy back to our team and our arena! (Not the Musselman, deer in the headlights energy that was often on display) Hopefully with the "us against them" frame of mind Theus can pull the team back out of a jam the same way in which he did at New Mexico State..Give him a chance.. If nothing else it will be a beautiful sight to see all those retro (names under the #'s) Theus jerseys in the crowd! It might actually bring a little passion back to the confines of that good ol' place we call home!!

Re: Reggie Theus to Be Kings New Head Coach
I'll second that.  Admittedly, I'm not getting all mushy inside, and it does seem to be a bit of a disappointment after almost getting Van Gundy.  However, after a bit of reflection, I believe it's a good choice.

Neither Brooks nor Shaw (correct me if I'm wrong) ever had any experience actually being a head coach - so that at least Theus has over the other canditates.  And as head coach, he has taken a mediocre program and made it better.  (I'd take demonstrated competence over undemonstrated expertise any day)  Also, he has the benefit of being a familiar figure, yet one not tarnished by the ugliness of the last Kings season.  An old/fresh face to lead the team to... ??? who know where.

Of course, only time will tell and it's probably good to keep in mind that the success of the team depends much more on what Petrie does in the next few months than anything Theus ever does or will do.

Re: Reggie Theus to Be Kings New Head Coach
This fucking sucks. I wanted Scotty Brooks all the way and this pisses me off.  I completely agree with you pookeyguru; there is something weird about this and I can't explain it either. So, I guess that psychic bitch at The Palms was right with her prediction.

Re: Reggie Theus to Be Kings New Head Coach
It really sucks for me cuz I feel the kings MUST move artest. I feel theus convinced the Maloof's they can win with him. That's what I think happened. The gut tells me Theus said you can do this with minor adjustments blah blah blah. Theus knows he'll only get so many shots. The question does Theus believe it or not who knows?

The Maloof's have too much control in this. That scares me. Im thinking about quitting on this group again. I'm tired of ownership thinking they know more about their basketball people. Geoff Petrie has proven he knows personnel. Has anybody on the Maloofs?

Re: Reggie Theus to Be Kings New Head Coach
Trading Bibby is the top priority. Keep Artest and trade Bibby for Gooden, Gibson (bibby clone with smaller contract and less mileage... shhhhh... don't tell Cleveland this) and Newble (who has an expiring deal).

And pray hard that Conley Jr. drops to us.

Time to blow 'em up, boyz.

Id rather have williams doleac wright & the 20th pick. Same dynamics and Petrie can draft wheover he wants.

Re: Reggie Theus to Be Kings New Head Coach
The thing that's scary is that this hire came form nowhere.  I mean no news or rumblings for a week or so; Theus' name hasn't been spoken of in awhile, then all of a sudden he's the head coach? I'm thinking the Magoofs got bored and told Petrie, "Hey we need a coach."  The question is whether this hire was fired from Petries gun or the Magoofs?

Re: Reggie Theus to Be Kings New Head Coach
I agree with Pookie AND I agree with Hoops916.

I really want this decision to be Petries. NOT the Maloofs. It's one thing if the Maloofs hate a guy for some reason but not just that they think one guy is better. That's fine but let Petrie be the one to hire HIS man. It's fine if the Maloofs tell Petrie "I like Theus and Brooks but we would prefer you pick Theus." Then it's up to Petrie to go with Brooks even though the Maloofs prefer Theus. Now if the Maloofs told Petrie "We like Brooks but we prefer Theus so DON'T hire Brooks, then that's just wrong.

As far as Theus coming here, I am excited about his potential. I DO think that he may be a great coach in the making. I do agree that he will bring a LOT of excitement back into the Arena and the fans and maybe that will translate over to the players who should like Reggie. At least they should respect his NBA experience and knowledge. Whether he can motivate on this level without rubbing people the wrong way we will see. Jerry Reynolds in his book mentioned numerous times how Reggie liked to do things his way and was stubborn. That could be good OR bad as a coach.

Re: Reggie Theus to Be Kings New Head Coach
I agree with all the aforementioned stuff (obviously!)

Here's my thing about Theus and the fans. How do fans get excited over a coach? That I don't get Dalt and would be curious as to why fans would get excited over Theus? Because he played here because he's a pretty boy what? I'm just curious. I think it's safe to say Jerry Reynolds will support this because he geniunely likes Reggie.

Re: Reggie Theus to Be Kings New Head Coach
Well Pookie, YOU or I won't be getting "excited" about the hiring of Reggie Theus but believe me, there are a LOT of people out there that casually follow the Kings that fondly remember Reggie as a King and like him from Jerry's comments about him and his appearences as a Kings announcer. My dad for one! I bet a lot of people will get interested in the Kings who may have been ho-hum for the last couple seasons just because "Hey, Theus is back!" Now WE (you and I) are not going to run out to get Kings tickets because of this but believe me it could stimulate some of the "fair weather" or "casual" fans to get interested in the Kings as a whole. If the Kings come out next season and start winning even in the first week, the general fans will attribute a LOT of it to Theus right away while last season Musselman was always under scrutiny even with the good start.

Re: Reggie Theus to Be Kings New Head Coach
Yeah, I'm not running out to buy more season tickets, but I'm not cancelling mine, either.  Wait and see, I guess.  You do have to figure that he will have a little more cred with the players than Musselman, but then again so probably would any of us.

Re: Reggie Theus to Be Kings New Head Coach

Yep. If they're sports fans anyway. I'm not talking about wives who only get interested when the playoffs arrive because they have another reason to throw some fun parties and invite their friends. ;)

Re: Reggie Theus to Be Kings New Head Coach
You guys think Garcia was approached about the hire due to their time at Louisville together? Cisco seems to be one of the players favorite guys on the team and could give Theus instant credibility in the locker room by vouching for him. Credibility among the fellas = something Musselman never possessed

Re: Reggie Theus to Be Kings New Head Coach
I really don't know a lot about Theus yet, so I'll keep an open mind.  I still have some faith in Petrie to get the right personnel.  I'm really anxious to see the official press conference though to see what detailed information we can get about the whole coaching search.

Re: Reggie Theus to Be Kings New Head Coach
Let's be realistic, It doesn't matter who coaches this ship wreck. The coach plays such a small roll in the pros. I hope this causes a chain reaction, and will start seeing some player movement i.e. trades. Now, to top this off the Kings can draft a big white stiff (Spencer Hawes)! Am I the only one in Sacramento who can remember how many 6'11" to 7' white stiffs have been drafted in the first round the last 15 years!!!  Petrie and the Maloofs are stretching for a coach, hopefully they don't do the same in the draft.

Re: Reggie Theus to Be Kings New Head Coach
6'11" to 7" white stiffs that we've drafted in the last 15 years or overall?  If it's us I can only remember Pete Chilcutt, chosen 27th in 1991.  We also took Joe Kleine at #7, but that was in 1985. So if there is a large number of tall, white, 1st round stiffs throughout the NBA we have not done our part to promote the species.  I would prefer to stay away from Hawes -I don't want to see bball jump of the burj dubai.

by section214 on Jun 19, 2007 9:55 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Re: Reggie Theus to Be Kings New Head Coach
Kleine wasn't a stiff either. He just wasnt an all star starting caliber player in the NBA. His drafting too high was the mistake of the franchise, not Joe's himself.

Re: Reggie Theus to Be Kings New Head Coach
Theus has already been quoted as saying that one of his first priorities is hiring an assistant with NBA head coaching experience - "a Del Harris type."  Anyone have any ideas or suggestions on this one (and no suggesting Musselman!)?

Re: Reggie Theus to Be Kings New Head Coach
I'm down with Reggie.  I still wish they had at least talked to Larry Brown, but Larry broke Geoff "Iceman" Petrie's famed covenant of silence, and he should probably watch his back for automobiles with tinted windows.  That said, Reggie is going to have more credibility in the locker room than Shaw, Brooks, or Rambo, and that could give him a longer tether to work things out.  We're all pretty resigned that the Kings aren't going to be too good next year, but they could at least be interesting.  We'll see.
Freakin' Kings.
