Summer League Ends

Here are the final statistics.

Name         Pts40  Reb40   Ast40  Tov40       FG/eFG/TS%
Hawes         20.0    6.5     1.2    4.3   .440/.440/.441
Jeter         18.0    5.7     5.1    3.6   .463/.463/.571
Williams      16.1   14.4     0.3    6.8   .511/.511/.522
Caner-Medley  16.2    9.7     1.7    3.4   .545/.606/.628
Garcia        24.5    3.6     4.2    6.6   .429/.500/.577
Shakur        10.4    3.8     8.2    3.3   .278/.292/.424
Smith         11.5    4.8     0.6    2.4   .400/.433/.539
Watkins       12.9   11.5     0.7    2.7   .538/.538/.576
Douby         17.9    5.5     4.1    4.1   .417/.458/.505

Disclaimers: Small sample sizes in all cases. Extremely small sample sizes for Darryl Watkins and Quincy Douby. Also, it's summer league. The level of competition isn't even quite NCAA ball, mostly because there is little rhyme or reason to things like "strategy" and "gameplanning."

Nonetheless, things that jump out:

  • Justin Williams, obviously, can rebound. I'll beat that drum til it breaks. You want to improve your rebounding? Play Justin Williams.
  • Nik Caner-Medley can shoot. He played in Germany last season, and it's clear he wants a shot in the League. I'd expect a training camp invite for him, based on his presence and large number of minutes in Vegas.
  • We could have a real battle in training camp between Mustafa Shakur and Pooh Jeter.

Re: Summer League Ends
If camp proves to be an "open call" at the big positions, it'll be fun to watch the hydra, Hawes and Williams battle it out.

Re: Summer League Ends
Is it disturbing to anyone else that 5-9 Pooh Jeter rebounded at a nearly equal rate as Spencer "Ha-Ha!" Hawes?

Re: Summer League Ends
I logged in specifically to mention the rebounding.  Hawes looked good by all accounts, so I don't want to take anything away from him, but his rebounding was really poor.

Re: Summer League Ends
It would be disturbing if Jeter was 5'3.

Re: Summer League Ends
I would find it disturbing if Jeter was 6'-6", Hawes has to do a better job of getting himself in the position to rebound. When Hawes does get to play this season he isn't exactly going to be the offensive focal point so if he wants to score at all he better get his ass on the glass and make his own opportunities.
We are slipping into the NBA abyss.

Re: Summer League Ends
I really don't get the naysayers at this site. Hawes was clearly one of the best players at summer league. He's was one of the big stories at blogs and NBA sites througout the country. His offensive performance was impressive by any standard and especially for a big-man that is so young.  But, you people continue to harp on the negatives. Frankly, I think it's because many of you were all perfectly certain that he was a bust. He then came out and kicked ass - making all the predictions total BS.

The kid is freakin' 19. He's going to keep growing and getting stronger. And, he has skills that are nearly non-existent these days in NBA big-men. He's not going to be 20/10 this year or next, but he will be by his early 20's.

And, please stop with all the ridiculous comparisons to Brad Miller. Their games are not even close to similar. Not only are their playing styles different but so are their attitudes.

Re: Summer League Ends
Kusian, the biggest thing is that, as you accurately point out, "The kid is freakin' 19." I'm not comparing him to Durant or B.Wright or Conley, but why do those guys all get some slack for being 19 and Hawes is already getting bashed for being a poor rebounder? Does anyone think that Wright would have rebounded better at this point? I just don't get it. But the kid seems to bristle a bit when people go negative on him, so keep it up, naysayers.

Re: Summer League Ends
Actually, that's a good point. He's does seem to thrive under the drumbeat of negativism.  Well, whatever pumps him up.  At this point, what I care about the most is him getting his ass worked each day at practice and then hitting the weight room. If he gives us a little burn this year, that would be great. But, I suspect he'll be like KMart and not really start contributing heavily until year 3 or year 2 at the earliest.

Re: Summer League Ends
Kusian, at 7'-0" the guy has to be able to show some kind of life on the glass. I don't understand praising a guy for having post moves and not being concern that he doesn't go get the ball. A good story or not, pointing out glaring deficiencies is part of being fans. If I were Hawes and everyone made a huge point about my lack of rebounding and defensive skills I would have gone out and tried to prove them wrong against inferior summer league players. I don't hope he's a bust, I want him to be good but if ends up scoring 15 points a game but averaging 5 or 6 rebounds a game (in the future as a starter) I don't think he makes the team better.

Re: Summer League Ends
Fine, point out weaknesses. But his upside has far outweighed any perceived weaknesses. Getting stronger and used to playing against larger players will improve his rebounding.  On the other hand, most of the big men that come to this league don't have a fine-tuned offensive game and, worse, never get it. Beyond that, his defense is certainly not bad. And he's also proven that he can jump just fine. He's also extremely aggressive, which is great to see in a young person. (Compare this to Martin when he first came to the Kings.) His lack of boards is more of a position and to some extent strength problem. (This is why he must get stronger if he's going to play the C position and obviously he must work to understand floor position as it relates to rebounding.)

People here seem to just love Justin, but I watch high school players with better offensive skills. I want to see as many posts about Justin not being able to shoot beyond 2 feet and not being a much better FT shooter than a 6th grade girl as there are about all of Hawes "problems."  A guy that can grab 15 boards a game but gives you nothing on the offensive side besides dunks isn't going to solve all of our ills either.

So, let's have some perspective here: Hawes is a nice piece for the future - not some sort of savior. He's been judged far too harshly at this site.

Re: Summer League Ends
The two skills that Williams has (scoring and rebounding) are a glaring weakness on this team. Although Williams has limited range, he is good at scoring around the hoop. I think the reason Williams doesn't get scrutinized like Hawes is that he wasn't the tenth pick in the draft, he hustles and brings excitement on every play. Williams could easily develop into a Ben Wallace type player and at worst he is Michael Smith (another fan favorite).

Now that I think about it, the Kings are looking a lot like the old Pacers team when they Had Smits, Dale Davis, Derrick McKee and Reggie Miller (Hawes, Williams, Francisco and Martin).

We are slipping into the NBA abyss.

Re: Summer League Endshttp://www.sactownroyalty.co
Pacers had their shot in 1998.

As far as Hawes/Williams I got another point about this too. Why is it that Williams whose 23, and played 4 years of college ball, but Hawes played 1 and is 19, is being criticized? Hawes has flaws but so does Williams. The important part is that both look like a quality tandem together for the interim and who knows how much longer. If justin williams was a true stud he woulda been drafted in the 2nd round.

Re: Summer League Ends
How can you compare cisco to mckee? I'll take cisco any day. Besides, wasn't miller cisco's nba comparison?

*just checked NBA draft.net
Cisco's nba comparison is Reggie while Kev's nba comparison is Kerry Kittles

check this out:

"NBA players similar to Kevin: Kerry Kittles is the best pick regarding physical similarities and position-Kevin is a better scorer and shooter than Kerry was at 19. Kerry was a better defender and a tougher, more disciplined player. Kerry would not have averaged 22 ppg at Western when he was a freshman, while Kevin could have averaged 22 at Villanova this year(he averaged 24ppg in 2 road games in December at Big 12 and ACC schools-both wins). As athletes, they are probably even.

Projection: Kevin has a shot at being the best 2 guard prospect in the draft in the next few years. He should have the height, athletic ability, and skills of an NBA player. His statistics will likely favor him over most other guards as well. Ultimately, his effort in the weight room may be the deciding factor in whether or not he is drafted. How he looks means little if he performs well on strength tests, and more importantly, makes plays that require great strength."

Wow.Best 2 guard prospect? In a draft that had Childress, Iggy, JR Smith, Dorrel Wright, Tonny Allen and Delonte West (Gordon was also in this draft but I think he was considered a PG back then)

Re: Summer League Ends
When has Williams been a scorer? I don't care how many baskets you get off offensive rebounds and putbacks, if you range does not extend beyond 4 feet you can never be called a scorer. He rebounds and blocks, anything beyond that and your stretching. Which is why I agree with Kusian, you are Kings fans with too much time and are jumping over any and every flaw you can find with Hawes. WAIT TILL HE PLAYS 1 NBA GAME FOR GODS SAKE. You already wrote him off whether or not you want to see him succeed. This is what happens when you watch every damn game of a sad season and need any form of entertainment that this team will give you, negative or not.

Re: Summer League Ends
Hawes aside. A player who can grab an offensive board, jump back up, and stuff the ball in the hoop is a valuable offensive weapon. Especially when he is playing in the 2nd team rotation with the less capable shooters on the floor. If your second team takes twenty shots a game and five of their misses turn into put backs you've just increased their conversion rate by 25%. Bad season, good season, it's nonsense to call it garbage, it's still 10 extra points.

Re: Summer League Ends
Also, 2nd quarter of the last summer league game, Napear interviewed Theus, asked him about El Flaco, Theus said Flaco would be bringing the ball up a lot more, making Bibby more of a shooting guard...solid idea Reggie, solid.

Re: Summer League Ends
I heard that, too. Made me wonder who would not be on the floor.
If the Kings want to play more up and down and if the Kings don't have a great rebounder (other than Williams) and if they make no trades, could we see more Ron-Ron at power forward this year, allowing Bibby, K-Mart, Artest and Garcia to be on the floor at the same time?
