Bibby Trade Talks Stall In Cleveland

Following onto Thursday's story, it looks like any chance of sending Bibby to the Cavaliers, and gaining a package that would include Drew Gooden, is pretty much gone, especially with the signing of Mikki Moore.

The Akron Beacon-Journal says the Bibby deal "appears to be dead", arguing that Moore gives the Kings the inside size they were looking for.

Sam Amick confirms as much in today's Bee, saying that attention has turned to the backup point guard position, as trade talks with Bibby are quiet. Amick expects the next trade discussions around Bibby to take place in February, and that he will once again start the season with the Kings.

Re: Bibby Trade Talks Stall In Cleveland
Even though this makes a lot of sense (unless Cleveland goes out and fills their PG need elsewhere before the trade deadline), I'm not thrilled about watching the opposition run layup drills until February.

So we have the "inside size" we were looking for? Does this mean that Mikki's going to protect the basket, or will Justin get a lot more burn this season?

Otherwise, Bibby's going to have to score 25 a game to make his plus/minus look good.

Re: Bibby Trade Talks Stall In Cleveland
As long as you have Bibby/KT/Brad/Shareef on your team it will be a layup drill because of every PG burning Bibby and Shareef, Brad, and KT have PATHETIC help defense...Bibby getting 25 a game will never happen.

Re: Bibby Trade Talks Stall In Cleveland
Bibby's game has always been this way, why is everyone on his case now. He had a bad year offensively which emphasized his defensive ineptitude. To follow up big words with small words, big whoop. If he has another sub-par year then maybe we can talk about getting rid of Bibby, until then he is the starting PG and damn capable too. As soon as he breaks out his "big ballz" monkey dance everyone will forgive him. At least that's how I hope it goes down. Just give him a little bit of slack.

Not sure I completely agree - his defensive ineptitude is a known quantity, whether he's scoring or not.

I'm not sure why he deserves a bit of slack - the guy is the highest paid player on the team. If he's not scoring the ball, he really gives you NOTHING.

Good thing is, his reputation as a scorer and a "big shot maker" around the league will probably keep his trade value high. Any team that picks him up and expects much more than a spot-up shooter is going to be sorely disappointed.

Re: Bibby Trade Talks Stall In Cleveland
I agree that his lack of defense is known, just wanted to say that one might focus on it more if you are not placated by his playmaking and scoring. Apologies for the confusion.

Otis, you are also correct when you state that MB10 gives you mothing if he doesn't put the rock in the hole. The only caveat is if he dishes out 8 or more assists, but as we all know this is indeed a rarity. I personally would like Mike to mold his game to the current squad and try to decrease his shot attempts while trying to facilitate the offense more. Brad is just plain horrible in that role now, so Bibby should step up.

I guess I just want to give Bibby one more season to prove what the rest of his career is going to be. I think/hope he has a much improved season next year both statistically and as a teammate. Only time will tell.

I think he would have gotten a lot more empathy from fans if he showed them and management a modicum of respect.

Re: Bibby Trade Talks Stall In Cleveland
Intersting that Bill Neff represents Wilks. Didn't he also represent Jason Hart? So let's sign the guy and not play him so we can listen to the 12th man on the team piss and moan over his lack of playing time.
Also, if the Kings sign Wilks it either means (A) Ronnie Price is getting a helluva an offer somewhere or (B) the Kings decided that Ronnie Price is just not an NBA point guard.
If there is a silver lining it's that Wilks would only be signed as point guard insurance, meaning he would be around to collect minutes only in the event of injury or...the eventual trade of our starting point guard!?!

Re: Bibby Trade Talks Stall In Cleveland
I just realized Neff represents Troy Hudson, too. They are currently trying to engineer a buy out of his contract in Minny. Did this guy corner the market on brooding back up point guards or what?

Re: Bibby Trade Talks Stall In Cleveland
Wasn't Neff, Matt Barnes agent until recently, or did he just become his agent? I seem to remember an interview with Barnes discussing the changing of his agent.

Re: Bibby Trade Talks Stall In Cleveland
I don't care much for Cleveland nor Drew Gooden. I hope that we do trade Mike soon and get a true point guard. One that handles the ball well. Like what otis29 said Mike is a spot up shooter and no more. He played well with the original crew (vlade, cwebb, bojax, christie, peja, brad) but that era is over and so is he. Just to throw things in in, I like Ridnour as PG.

Re: Bibby Trade Talks Stall In Cleveland
Ridnour? omg
He's as bad defensively as Mike.
He's also an inconsistent shooter and his assist numbers were bumped up by playing with 2 great shooters.

by cwebb on Jul 23, 2007 10:01 AM PDT up reply actions

Re: Bibby Trade Talks Stall In Cleveland
As an individual he might not be the best player. Leave the SG position to K-Mart. What's a major weakness to the Kings other than D? Probably ball movement. With Ridnour at least we'll have a good ball handler that doesn't turn the ball over 10 times a game like Mike. On top of that, its a feasible trade since Seattle is just waiting to dump him. I'm not talking about bringing in a fantasy baketball PG, just being reasonable.

Re: Bibby Trade Talks Stall In Cleveland
Bibby could never get high assist numbers playing with Webb, Vlade, Brad, Doug, Bobby, Peja. Please don't give the stupid well they played the Princeton offense excuse.

Mike Bibby has always had low assist numbers.

Time to blow 'em up, boyz.

Didn't Bibby break the franchise assists record last year?

Re: Bibby Trade Talks Stall In Cleveland
Sacramento era. More due to longevity than anything, though. Numerous Sacramento PGs have had higher per-game assist numbers.

Interesting, assists were Bibby's strength in Vancouver.

Re: Bibby Trade Talks Stall In Cleveland
Hmm I could see us trading him to the Celts for Ratliff and Rondo at the all star break.  Rondo is the polar opposite in Bibby as he can defend, pass, run the offense, but has a horrible shot.  He's also only in his second year coming up and having a youthful PG would be beneficial plus the immediate relief of Ratliff coming off the books.  Either way, I think it depends on how close the C's feel they are to a championship.

This above scenario has been run a lot I just thought I'd revoice those opinions once more.

Re: Bibby Trade Talks Stall In Cleveland
and why would the C's want to get rid of rondo?
Having Allen & Pierce he's an ideal PG for them.

Re: Bibby Trade Talks Stall In Cleveland
Bibby's game has always been this way, why is everyone on his case now.

I don't think his game has always been like this, Bibby used to get to the line more and have better shot selection this season he settled way too much for 3's and for some reason i think his defense stuck out the most this year. And also this is the most he is getting paid his whole career that might have something to do with it also, when his jumper is not falling he is pretty much WORTHLESS and his jumper was not falling consistently last season and if you are getting paid that much and you are terrible defensively you must produce on the offensive end and i don't think Bibby did either this year.

Re: Bibby Trade Talks Stall In Cleveland
Bibby used to get to the line more because he got to the basket more.  With that said, those were the days when Peja, Christie, Vlade et al spread the floor much better.  The last couple of years our ball movement has not been good. Other than Martin occassionally geting to the rim due to amazing quickness and great hops, the Kings don't create a lot of open lanes due to a lack of ball movement. Moreover, Bibby has never been super-quick. (He's more crafty than quick.) He also is a not a great jumper, which is compounded by the fact that though listed at 6'2, he's really closer to 5'11 or 6'. So, all of this is a recipe for watching jump shot after jump shot.

Re: Bibby Trade Talks Stall In Cleveland
All Ratliff/Rondo does for us is free up salary next year, but it won't free up enough to make us players in free agency next year. Petrie has already noted that we're probably two years away (if not three) from making a big free agent splash.
Rondo is the poor man's Randy Brown. His shot is so bad (and his decision making is not much better) that I just don't see him as a viable NBA starting PG.
If Petrie has discussed Bibby for Ratliff/Rondo (or Telfair) the sticking point is probably that Petrie wants a draft pick for next year, a draft that promises to have at least a half dozen point guard prospects better than Law or Crittenton and enough talent at the bigs that a guy like Ante Tomic may still not be a lottery pick.
Here's hoping that the Celts get off to a decent start and determine that Bibby is the guy to help vault them to top.

I would kill for Calderon in kings uniform (free agent next year). Free some cash Geoff!!!

Re: Bibby Trade Talks Stall In Cleveland
Calderon would be very nice, but so would Rose, Mayo, Collison, Augustin, Bayless or Lawson, and they should all be in next year's draft.

Re: Bibby Trade Talks Stall In Cleveland
That's why I find this urgency to win now so wierd. It seems to me Moore was one of those short term desperate measure type of moves. Now you add Wilks and something is not right. You could lose 60 games next year with Wilks ,Shakur ,or Price.
