USA Basketball

I'll tell y'all what (sorry to interject some Texas vernacular, but I can't help it) I am pretty darn excited about USA basketball. I know it is going to be some time before we get to see the finished product against top competition, but I really can't wait to see if we can regain our rightful position of prominence in the world of international hoops. By all accounts, the FIBA World Chamionships are going to be a walkover for the boys in blue, so that leaves us until the Olympics to see how we will do. I realize that this has nothing to do with Kings bball as the only King on the invited roster is B52 but there is no way on God's green Earth that he makes that squad. However, since this is the offseason I thought I'd share my thoughts on the team and ask what y'all think.

First off, I am giddy that Kobe Bryant is on the team. Wait, wait... please keep your rotten tomatoes in their basket, I am not giving any Laker-love here. I hate Kobe the Laker but I adore Kobe the USA basketball star. He is, quite simply, the best singular talent in the NBA and perhaps the world. He is #1 to Tim Duncan's #1A. Too bad Duncan is out, but he is a whiny baby so if he wants out so be it. I honestly do not think anyone can stop Kobe anytime anywhere and it is up to him to determine how far the team goes. He shoots, plays defense, is a good teammate (arguably), and is a leader. If he had any semblance of a team around him in LALA-land the Lakers would be a force. Now, as I slowly bring my lips off of Kobe's ass, I realize he is a ballhog and that the international game is more about teamwork than any other brand of basketball. This is where I hope Kobe's playmaking comes into account. Last year he tried desperately to involve his teammates but, alas, they suck. Hopefully with Team USA (America...fuck yeah!) he will trust his teammates and his passes will result in wideopen looks. The problem, as always, is who can shoot the rock? Michael Redd is the supposed answer, but I am not so sure. He is streaky and the international three gives us Americans fits, for some unknown reason. Carmelo is a shooter, but more of a scorer than spot-up shooter but I suppose he can knock a few down. Billups can also shoot, but again he is streaky. Jason Kidd is a phenomenal addition to USA Basketball and, even though he is 125 years-old, is the best American PG there is. He should give Amare and Bosh (or insert other PF here) easy dunks and layups. Lebron, although to a lesser degree, will also help out his teammates with his passing skills (while Brad can help out with his Bow-hunting skills).

One caveat to all my USA-love is that I expect everyone to be accepting of their roles on the team. Obviously Lebron has to accept second or even third banana on this team, something he might not be used to. The same goes for Melo. Also, this team cannot under-estimate the competition. They are good ladies and gentleman. I fully expect some close games and even maybe some nail-biters. But in the end, USA has the talent and the desire to win the gold and I fully expect them to.

Here is my roster:
Chandler/Bosh/Melo/Kobe/Kidd followed by
Amare/Prince(Boozer?)/Lebron/Redd/Billups

Short on true size but high on defense and playmaking. I haven't put in a tremendous amount of true analytical power into this, just off the top of my head, but it seems nice to me. What do you think?

Re: USA Basketball
I'd pay money to watch that team play.
One thing that burned my britches this morning was the attached article via Dime/FoxSports. They take the opening paragraph talking about the next generation of Team USA and they mention some nice young talent...but not Kevin Martin!!! Someone please forward this to him at once - let's see what happens when K-Mart plays pissed.

Re: USA Basketball
Nice analysis. I'd have LeBron start in front of Melo, though -- LeBron can actually pass. And since Kidd and Chandler don't shoot, you don't have to worry about Kobe's touches.

Re: USA Basketball
I would start Howard over Chandler and bench Bosh - his post game sucks.
And you have to take Mike Miller - his shooting is invaluable.
Kidd/Kobe/Miller/?/Howard
That would be my starting five. You can insert Bron or Melo instead of Miller.
The PF position is most concerning, I would probably start Boozer and bring Bosh of the bench.

And unless Kobe really catches fire I doubt that USA team will win gold.
Over the last few years they've changed lineups, brought different coaches (Brown, coach K - who can make  NCAA tournament team out of 5 sissy boys but couldn't make a TEAM out of the best players on the planet). USA play is still based on fast breaks, athleticism and 1 on 1 play (which is what nba is all about) and I don't see that picture changing in the near future (recently I watched u19 world championship and USA got their asses handed to them by Serbia in the final).

Re: USA Basketball
One other note: This is the Tourney of the Americas this summer, so it's just Brazil, Argentina and the like. Argentina is practically going with a B-squad (no Manu, no Oberto, no Nocioni) and I'm not sure Nene or Barbosa are playing for Brazil. Should be an absolute cakewalk. Should, of course, is the operative word.

The real test is the Olympics. Spain is going to be stacked again, France should be much better than its Worlds display (adding Batum, a fit Diaw, a healthy Parker). Greece is still good, Italy is improved. With a fully-loaded roster for both Brazil and Argentina too, it'll be a tough run.

Re: USA Basketball
Kidd|Kobe|Lebron|Dwight|Chandler

That would be my lineup..I don't really want to start Lebron i would rather have Battier or Prince for defense but you already have Kidd|Chandler in there and also Dwight.I wish Josh Howard and Tim Duncan would of not declined because they would easilly make my lineup but oh well.

Re: USA Basketball
Yeah... I forgot about Dwight Howard, a true beast on the boards and I would probably have him either starting or backup five. I like Chandler for his shotblocking and rebounding. USA has an absolute need to protect the hoop so that the perimeter doesn't have to sag off of the deadly international shooters.

Re: USA Basketball
That team will get murdered, none of the starters know how to play the game without being the 1st option. the concept of team ball is dead in the NBA as we know it...

Look at our glory-days Kings. The best team play anyone's seen in about forever(siddown Spurs fans)
and when it came down to it, it had to be SOMEONE'S team.

Re: USA Basketball
Kidd's the third option on the Nets. Chandler, did he even get 10 shots a game this season?

Re: USA Basketball
OK this is my first post from the valley of the sun, but being a transplanted kings fan and avid (read: obsessed) NBA fan, I have to throw out my starting five and bench.

pg kidd, sg bryant, sf anthony, pf Bosh, C Chandler

bench

pg Williams (though they will go with billups)
SG Michael Redd (wade in 08)
SF Lebron
PF Amare
C D. Howard

backup 2 : Henrich/billups, battier

Carmelo is perfect for int. play- killer mid range shot.  Bosh will play off chandler who gets putbacks.  And the second unit is perfect as long they keep in shooters to offset lebron and to a lesser extent, williams.  Three things I had to second guess: lebron/Nike being second string, amare not killing the pf on the first team, and the ghost of brad miller for leaving him off the team (I say ghost because we haven't seen him in two years...)

Which team are you talking about? please dont tell me you are talking about mine? because i have Kidd/Chandler and even Dwight isnt exactly a #1 offensive option yet.

Re: USA Basketball
This roster:

Chandler/Bosh/Melo/Kobe/Kidd followed by
Amare/Prince(Boozer?)/Lebron/Redd/Billups

You can make the Case that Kidd doesn't EXACTLY fall into that category, but can you imagine how effective he would be when NOT touching the ball?

LBJ needs the ball to be effective. Redd does too. So does Bosh, Melo, Kobe, Kidd, and Amare. there are more stars on this roster than necesary to be competitive or effective.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Teamwork is why we get our asses handed to us by Puerto Rico, Greece, and alot of other teams who are not athletically superior. It's also the bread and butter of every NBA dynasty. It doesn't matter if you have Russell, Magic, MJ, or Duncan on your team. Without players to do the dirty work you'll never be great.
Kill me for saying this (and I'd love to myself), but...
Robert Horry exemplifies that ethic.
PS~ The original Dream Team was a freak of nature, where everyone respected the others' game, and had REASON to share larger than individual fame and ego. It's time to think about going away from that and bring back the college kids where TEAM is paramount.
I'm gonna grab a cup of coffee, check my delusions, and see if a mea culpa is in order..doubt it though.
Re: USA Basketball
Just to stand up for Team USA, this team (as constructed by Colangelo) did not get their asses handed to them by any team. You perhaps are thinking of previous versions of USA basketball which did lose to PR with Carlos Arroyo playing out of his mind. In the last World Championships the USA beat PR 111-100. Not the best to allow 100 points to PR but they are a decent team. The only loss was to Greece and by a 6-pt margin. Perhaps you feel that the US should stomp Greece but, as I mentioned in the post, these international teams are good. They did beat a very good Argentinian team to win the bronze. How, in all due respect, can you add Kobe, Billups, and Kidd and not expect a better team than the last squad. Adding to that they have had more time together which also can only help. The teams which USA faces have been together since they were youngsters and as a result have a much better team concept. If you ever play pickup ball you cannot expect to run 1-2-2-1 diamond press with some guys who have never played together. Team USA gets a couple of weeks to throw together a semblance of an offensive and defense attack as well as adjust to the international rules. How hard do you think it is for these guys to remember to take the ball off of the rim? That is ingrained.. don't touch the ball until out of the cylinder. All I'm saying here is that Team USA, by virtue of talent, has gotten better. That being said a bronze-medal team can be expected to compete for gold where I think they can win.
Re: USA Basketball
USA dominated Olympic basketball with the same handicap of players not practicing since childhood together for many years, though other foreign teams had that one advantage over us even then.
I repeat: They know how to play the game and we don't.
Re: USA Basketball
Are you going to back that up with any facts whatsoever? I gave you some real results and refuted several of your statements and you come back with an unequivocal dismissal of USA basketball. I agree they play more of a team game, by necessity, as they do not have the athletic talent that the US has. The Dream Team was a fluke with most teams just happy to be on the court with MJ etc... If the US gets trounced in the Olympics you can come back here and talk all the shit to me you want. Until then, however, we are a third place team which added two starters (and possibly the best player on the planet). One can only expect improvement..no? Hard to argue against that one, I do declare.
Re: USA Basketball
I have to disagree with you to a small extent. The problem with the USA team has not been a lack of talent - has there been a time when they didn't have superior talent? So I'm not sure that adding "better" players is a surefire recipe for success.
It still has to be the right players and the right coaching staff. Even then, we might have to accept the fact that it's going to be difficult to win these international competitions, regardless of who we send.
Re: USA Basketball
I accept that. I too think it will be no cakewalk. Hell, that's why I get so excited about the subject. I do worry about the "right" players and coaching staff however. I was reading Gilbert Arenas' blog on NBA.com (a must read, IMO)http://www.nba.com/blog/gilbert_arenas.html and he was skeptical about some of the player choices for Team USA. I wish he had named such players but I do trust an insider opinion such as Agent Zero. If he was healthy I would include him on Team USA as he is a potent scorer and seems to want to do ANYTHING to win for his country. I wish all had his passion.
I am a bit critical of Coach K, at least regarding coaching NBA talent. I will need to give him more time to prove himself, but you definetly have to wonder if his message and philosophy penetrates to the highly paid men of the NBA. I suppose we shall see in '08.
Re: USA Basketball
Yes. Great blog. I'd like to draw particular attention to his bit on Shark Attacks:
"There Are No Such Thing as Shark Attacks
...There are these things called shark attacks, but there is no such thing as a shark attack. I have never seen a real shark attack.
I know you're making a weird face as you're reading this. OK people, a shark attack is not what we see on TV and what people portray it as.
We're humans. We live on land.
Sharks live in water.
So if you're swimming in the water and a shark bites you, that's called trespassing...That is not a shark attack.
A shark attack is if you're chilling at home, sitting on your couch, and a shark comes in and bites you; now that's a shark attack..."
Re: USA Basketball
Hell, that's why I get so excited about the subject.
Hey, me too. I can't remember enjoying basketball as much over the last few years as I did watching the FIBA Championships last year. I think the Olympics are going to be outstanding.
Honestly, there is no way you would hurt your chances by adding a guy like Kobe, and to a lesser extent Billups and Kidd. I'm just concerned that our problems playing international ball aren't strictly a matter of talent.
Re: USA Basketball
 You may make light of a 6 pt. loss, but a 6 pt. win is an embarrassment to the nation that CREATED the game.
Where were your refutations? All I saw were excuses. I missed that part, I guess. Furthermore, how do you refute history? Tasty Dream Team kool-aid you bought and had a healthy sip of. Star-struck they may have been, but competitiveness is inherent for all players at that level. Simply put, they were outclassed and they knew it. It doesn't mean they didn't try.
You seemed to have missed the point that it's still a team game, and an expectation that putting the best players in the league on a team  equals improvement, is a phallucy.
That's why they play the game, right?
Re: USA Basketball
college kids went to the pan am games, and didnt shine, to say the least (5th place)
Well, Kidd is a pg so the ball is supposed to be i his hands, show me a pg who is effective without the ball.
Re: USA Basketball
Exactly. These guys bring the ball up or are only superstar effective in fast-break situations. That line-up is doomed to fail.
Re: USA Basketball
One more thing: I can't think of one team that has won the championship in the last 10 years, possibly more, that didn't do it with the half-court game.
