Re: Mustafa Shakur a King
Hawes was a given. Shakur's signing may mean the Kings will look to let Ronnie Price go probably. Other than that I have no thought's on Shakur. If he can play he can. If not no big risk there.

Re: Mustafa Shakur a King
Without knowing the details (what else is new) my guess is Shakur got the Amundson contract, a small guarantee that could turn into a full term contract. This is probably insurance if Price gets a deal the Kings don't want to match.

Re: Mustafa Shakur a King
Why match if you can pay Shakur what you payed Price? Is Ronnie that valuable?

Re: Mustafa Shakur a King
Probably not, but he's worth the qualifying offer, and someone still has to offer him more than that (and I think someone will).

Re: Mustafa Shakur a King
This does not really make sense? why grab another PG? just have DoubyPrice play there.

Re: Mustafa Shakur a King
If Price receives an offer that the Kings don't want to match then they have Shakur as their 12th man at a fraction of the price. Should they retain Price then it probably costs the Kings about $75,000 against the cap for Shakur, as was the case with Amundson last year.

Re: Mustafa Shakur a King
Yep, it's a no-brainer to sign him. He should be an OK 3rd stringer.
He can shoot, and he looks good in a suit. Hey, everybody - It's REGGIE TIME!

Re: Mustafa Shakur a King
Neither of those guys are really point guards, at least they're not on the NBA level. Shakur might not be able to go Ronnie Price on Boozer but I think he's worth a shot, especially if someone else tries to lure Price away. We need help at the PG position in terms of depth, and it's a no lose to sign Shakur.

Re: Mustafa Shakur a King
Great youtube clip idjpg. Thank you very much.

Some initial thoughts on Shukar.

  1. He presents himself well. He felt comfortable with the media which works well for him. If he's capable of handling himself well in the media it will make bigger markets look at him in a different light down the road.

  2. He didn't  seem to think he was a 1st round lock. Some guys you can tell are un-intelligent but Shakur doesn't strike me as the type. It's hard to say from watching a 10 minute youtube clip but at the same time it's all we have to go in.

  3. The most interesting thing he said was how many different things every team is looking for. He went to every team he could looking for a tryout thinking he was probably a 2nd round pick. He didn't seem bothered by where he went or trying to go higher than he should. In fact his signing of the Kings meant he was interested in getting a chance to play. My gut says that because he probably will be alot more motivated coming out of summer league, and the Kings won't have as much incentive to match any Ronnie Price offers with similar talents on the roster plus the presence of Shakur, to play well and give a good showing. Ronnie did well in 2 years here despite getting limited time. Maybe Shakur can do the same kind of things for himself.

I say good luck to him. This team needs guy like Shakur that the fans can root for. It's hard for rooting for crybabies like Miller/Bibby/Thomas all the time. It's more enjoyable to root for an underdog like Shakur who wants to be there and is just starting out. Petrie has always shown a willingness to scout these types of guys and has a good track record with them eventually sticking. Let's hope that Shakur is the latest evidence of that trait.

Re: Mustafa Shakur a King
As a die-hard Arizona fan and alum and having watched Staf since his freshman year I feel qualified to comment on Shakur.  To put it simply, he never lived up the hype.  He signed with Arizona out of Philly as the top PG in his class.  Since then he's been under the microscope.  After a respectable freshman season, expectations only rose and when he didn't deliver his sophomore year, Arizona fans came down on him pretty hard.  It's likely no coincidence that he ran the least successful Arizona team in the last 15 years during his term.  He is a poor decision maker, especially on the break, and will often jump in the air without a clue as to what to do next.  He's a decent 3 point shooter, but with his terrible form, his shot leaves too low and slowly to be effective in the NBA.  The good news is that he makes good use of his size and he can penetrate and slash at will.  He improved quite a bit during his senior year and really upped his assist average.  He was still prone to careless turnovers, but he will only continue to improve, especially if he's working under Bibby.  I'm very excited that the Kings signed him and I expect that if he makes the 15-man roster, you'll see steadily improve and increase his minutes throughout the season.  He's not a reliable backup yet, but he's certainly worth your patience.

Re: Mustafa Shakur a King
There are always guys with low 1st round talent and Shakur was certainly one. His time @ zona hurt and no matter how anybody slices it will hurt him for awhile. However, the pro game is very different from the college one, the demands are very different on  a player. It's very easy to see that Shakur could thrive in the pro game if his decision making in the open/half court improves.

Re: Mustafa Shakur a King
I just think this team needs to worry more about fixing the weakass frontline than grabbing a 3rd string PG (and that's 3rd string behind 2 pretty unproven players)

Re: Mustafa Shakur a King
How does this signing prevent Petrie from doing exactly those things? Or do you assume he can only handle one task at a time?

Re: Mustafa Shakur a King
rimrock,
The signing of Shakur has about as much impact on this roster as the decision to serve Pepsi over Coke at the arena. Someone has to be the 3rd string point guard. Why not Shakur, especially if he winds up being significantly cheaper than Price, which will then allow Petrie to spend that money elsewhere, maybe (dare I say) on the front line?

Re: Mustafa Shakur a King
I don't think Shakur will be around to see game one. Ronnie Price has proven that he is a strong defender and given the opportunity can handle a team in short bursts. Price was also a very good scorer at the college level and shown flashes of that potential at the NBA level. Neither Price or Shakur will ever be starting PG at he NBA level so I would stick with the guy that the Kings have invested two years time developing. Plus I love to watch Price dunk.
We are slipping into the NBA abyss.

Re: Mustafa Shakur a King
Section, isnt Price going to move up into the 2nd string PG? because if Shakur is cheaper than that means he is taking Price role? what is going to be Ronnie's role next season? a 2nd string or a 3rd string? the 3rd string NEVER PLAYS it was what Price was his 1st season but his 2nd season? he was more of a 2nd string that hardly never got any PT because of John Salmons and somewhat Fransisco Garcia.

Re: Mustafa Shakur a King
rimrock, I don't think that you will see Shakur and Price on the roster together. If Price receives an offer from another team that is well in excess of the qualifying offer then the Kings will probably bid him a fond farewell and keep Shakur, who would only get minutes after Bibby/Garcia/Salmons/Douby. Remember, Price could potentially receive a larger offer from overseas, so it's not just other NBA teams that could be bidding for his services. Kareem Rush did it last year and now he's back in the NBA. Shakur would probably not even be active for most games. He would be an insurance policy in case of injury to one of those in front of him.
Should they retain Price (meaning that Price does not receive any large offers), then Shakur is let go at a cost of probably $75,000 or less. Price would probably see a little more action than Shakur, but the bottom line is that he probably won't log big minutes with the current roster, so he's not worth chasing if the dollars get too big. Price is a nice player, and could make a nice contribution on certain teams (San Antonio came to mind before they re-signed Vaughn). I love watching him play. But he, Shakur, or whoever lands that 12th or 13th roster slot probably won't see much game time for the Kings.

Re: Mustafa Shakur a King
Section, so Ronnie Price getting a new contract that the Kings don't want to match and Shakur is his replacement? but let's talk about this on the other side...what if Ronnie Price gets the most money from sacramento? and he resigns with the team? than how in the hell will Shakur fit in? behind all ~ Bibby ~Salmons ~ Garcia ~ Douby what is the point of having Shakur than? THAT IS MY POINT you don't him right now Petrie should have just waited and see where Ronnie Price went and than if Price left for more money or whatever than it might be necessarry to bring in Shakur but right now it does not really make sense because Petrie signed this guy too early but atleast it's not guaranteed i think?

Re: Mustafa Shakur a King
It's guaranteed up to 75 G's I think. Which is not that big of a deal. It makes perfect sense. Get Shakur now before he's snatched up by another team in a similar deal. I don't think the Kings are gonna match Ronnie's offer anyway. I think if Ronnie was going to be here he would be on the SL team.

Re: Mustafa Shakur a King
I wouldn't really worry about him getting snatched up it wont take Price that damn long to figure out what his decision is if teams were so interested in Shakur he would of been drafted late 2nd round.

75K is cheap insurance by NBA standards. Love the passion, rimrock. Can't wait to trade opinions on something more important than the 13th player.
