Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

this is my thing

Trade Artest. He's a great individual player but he's gotta go. Bibby's pride should make him have a great year and regain go-to, "big shot" walk upcourt status. Martin is an ok second fiddle but will never lead an NBA team. Hawes? whatever. I say give him the chance other top 10 picks will get...start, limited minutes, build some confidence for his future starting center spot? Miller should mentor him from off the bench but still get alot of minutes unless his effort looks like it did last year. I'd take Balkman, Jones, and Dickau from NY for Ron Ron in a heartbeat. Dickau and Jones' contracts are only 1 year, and Balkman could be a stud SF. Starting lineup: Bibby, Martin, Garcia(thrive under Theus baby, thrive), Moore(should lineup well with Hawes inside- while hitting jumpers? and providing enrgetic D and experience), Hawes(let's see what we got). First bigs off the bench: Miller for offense, Williams for D. Shareef and KT? 10 mins. in the right situations. Guards: Salmons, etc. Replacing Ron Ron for SF minutes: Balkman- 8rebs, 2blks, 2stls? It could happen.

Re: this is my thing
If I had to judge you by the paragraph you wrote regarding your take on what we should do with Artest, I would say you're not a true Kings fan. Bibby was decent at one point in his career but last season he was garbage. Especially in comparison to Artest, who also had an off year. I hate people who just dismiss Artest as a bad egg and want to keep Bibby because he's been here so long and provides a popular name for the Kings.

Artest is way more productive a player than Bibby and has a smaller contract, so trading away Artest for scrubbies and cap relief would just be stupid. If you truly want the Kings to become a better team (like any true fan), and not just hang on to the overrated "Bibbilicous", you would want to trade Bibby for expiring contracts and draft picks.

Re: this is my thing
I can't fault anyone that dismisses Artest as a bad egg based on his checkered past, both with the NBA and the law. He appears to be trying to do the right thing at present, but one summer does not undo years of misdeeds. Artest should be no different than you and me in as much as we have to earn the respect of others, it is not just granted to us. Artest the player is better at this point than Bibby the player and Artest the contract is better than Bibby the contract, but Artest has failed to show the consistency in life that would encourage the Kings to make him a part of their long term planning. Bottom line, neither Artest or Bibby factor into the Kings future, other than the pieces they might bring via trades.

Re: this is my thing
True, Bibby wasn't great last year and his career is decling but he's still a good point guard in some repects. Positives...shooting? and I think his heart really is into the Kings because of his tenure and the years where they excelled, something no one displayed last year(maybe even himself but I'd like to see his bounceback this year). Negatives... NO D, No quickness, dropping assist rate(something addressed by a true point guard backup-Dickau?).

I would just keep Bibby rather than Artest(trust me I go back & forth) because I like the idea of the old days when players stayed longer, hitched their name to a team, and had a stake in it's success over many years. I wouldn'd keep him for a popular name, I don't think his name's that popular in the NBA anymore. Although the teams that want him(Cleveland, Miami, etc?) want him for exactly the things that can really benefit the Kings. I think Artest wants to be 'the man' and make this 'his team' as evidenced by all the times he controls the ball as if he's the only one who will make the great play. Didn't happen enough. Artest has great skills to offer, but he seems to be using the Kings to showcase his skills...Bibby may actually want to make it work here for the Kings. Wherever and whenever Ron Ron wins a title it'll be because he made it happen.  I think Bibby would truly be happy for the city of Sac and the organization for any success.

As far as the scrubbies in trade, I'm going on the assumption that Dickau & Jones are servicable guards which we need; and Balkman is a young player @ Artest's position who could be pretty good. Garcia starts though. Trust me I don't want to hang on to Bibby because he's not bibbilicious anymore, but trade him for expiring contracts and picks and who's our point guard. I say don't rush him out of town until we have a quality starter to replace him. No one offering to take him & his salary has offered a replacement. Which point guard would y'all like to lead us into the future?

Re: this is my thing
One more thing...to address my dismissal of Artest as a bad egg, I did't say that. Artest seems to be a pleasant, super sincere, positve, nice guy. It's just that every year something bad happens. I hope the best for him if he stays or not, but I just think some players are better individually compared to with a team trying to come together. I think he'd fit better with a team with strong coaching and leadership already in place(Miami). That along with the odds of something thats not helpful to the team happening again, I think I'd let him go for a good(ish) deal. (Balkman, Pavlovic, Posey? and guards to support Bibby's dropoff)

Re: this is my thing
No, I do not agree. I live in Texas and have seen many of his games. He was awesome at the college level but I don't know how well that will translate to the pros. He doesn't shoot exceptionaly well. He doesn't have real NBA range. He has a wierd hitch in his shot (so does K-Mart so not necessarily a bad thing). The only thing he has going for him is his "clutchness" but when is he going to get those opportunities in the NBA? His pure athleticism will be somewhat negated in the NBA where everyone is quicker and stronger. The Big12 is a weak conference. Antione Wright was a stud at A&M but he is considered a bust (drafted by NJ '05) and I think he is out of the league. He was just as successful as Acie but didn't get the national attention because the rest of the Aggies were real bad. I really do hope he does well and in the right situation he might. He is a classy guy and the type of player you want on your team (as far as attitude).

Re: this is my thing
Wright still plays for the Nets Mityt. As far as Acie I agree with you. I hyped up Rodney Stuckey before the draft, and I think Billy Knight made a huge mistake passing on him, but whatever. If Acie Law floats your boat so be it.

Re: this is my thing
i think it's safe to say that the dime crew wants to stay in sacramento, so you got a point there. what the hell is up with that anyway? what the hell is the dime crew? i know its bibby's relatives and friends and what not, but what the hell is that? dime crew? what? someone explain the point of this to me...

Re: this is my thing
Its because he's a point guard and dimes are assists. However, Bibby doesn't really pass enough to have his crew named for assists. I doubt his friends would wear shirts that say Volume Shooter Crew.

I have also heard that "dime" is a reference to all the marijuana (dime bags?) that the group smokes.

Please no Bradly Miller as Spencer's mentor that would suck.

i was merely commenting on the absurdity of getting together with the boys and calling yourself the dime crew, and hoping that someone would share a humorous anecdote on the subject.

Also, Bibby has a tattoo that says "Dime".

Shawes?  Yeah, great move drafting a big white center whose only downside according to predraft reports was a "lack of mobility".  That usually works out well.  Although, Sacto has had good luck with the formula (Divac, early Miller).

Larry Bird wasn't exactly known for his athletic ability, I'd settle for some desire and a will to win though

by Murf on Aug 20, 2007 2:30 PM PDT up reply actions

That's a good point.
Why is it said so often that the big white guys have "slow feet" and are "unathletic"?Is that really true? Are there stats to back that up?Or is it just a stereotype for the sake of convenience? Is the opposite true(i.e., "big athletic types" lack  "offensive skills and an outside jump shot")?
