All Time Sacramento Kings Roster - Point Guards

I figured point guard would be pretty easy, as my first thought was we have not had a lot of good point guards here. But this might be the deepest list, with some of the most fun players we've had here.

For the person that has been goofin' the vote throughout this process, I'm sorry that Eddie House, Anthony Johnson, Damon Jones, Travis Mays, Rory Sparrow, Darrick Martin and Larry Drew did not play enough games here to make the list (but Danny Ainge did, contradicting an earlier statement by yours truly). Also, Randy Brown, Ronnie Price and Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf did not crack my top ten, though you could make the argument for any of them in the nine or ten slot.

Remember, your comments will also help determine the 1st, 2nd and 3rd team slots. So without further delay -

Update [2007-9-20 11:19:55 by section214]: I will be posting the final results of our all time roster polls Sunday evening, so if you have any more comments to make regarding any of the positions, get them in now or forever hold your peace.

Point Guards
I took Bibby #1. Theus was 20 pt. / 8 ast. compared to Mike's 18 and 6, but Bibby has logged more time, and played mostly with a team that shared the ball a lot more as a group. Think 2001-02 and not last year and this pick becomes pretty easy.

Theus #2, the first "star" that we had here in Sac. He shot well, passed well, and was pretty tough.

Bobby Jackson gets my #3.  There are guys below him with better stats, but none of them were more important to their team than B-Jax.

Jason Williams #4, Kenny Smith #5.

Re: Point Guards
I respect your thinking on this one, Section, but don't agree 100%. (After the first two picks it gets tougher for me.)

IMO, Bobby wasn' really a PG.  He was more of a shooting guard who came off the bench to score, score, score, and, well, score. In his early years, he was also a pretty good defender. (I think his man defense slipped significantly his last couple of years.) So, I can't put him in my top 3; but I gotta get him in my top 5 just because he's so much better than most of the guys on the list.

  1. Bibby
  2. Reggie
  3. Jason
  4. Kenny
  5. BJax
  6. tough call from here....Danny and Spud were both pretty good in their time here. Hurley had potential, but...and beyond Hurley, who really cares?

Re: Point Guards
Jason Williams is definitely in the top 3. I can make no claim on Reggie Theus. Jason Williams and C-Webb put the Kings on the Sports Illustrated: Best Show on the Court or w/e it was. Sure Williams' team s never made it past round 2 but they face an invincible Lakers team in 2001 when steamrolled everyone.
Time to blow 'em up, boyz.

Re: Point Guards
Kusian, agreed on how tough it is to classify B-Jax. Technically he logged his minutes at the point (when he was on the floor with Christie he usually covered the opposing team's pg and when he was on the floor with Bibby he covered the quicker player, which was usually the pg). I was going to include an "off the bench" category in this process, but it became very confusing for me. Not a tough task, by the way - sometimes lacing up my shoes can become very confusing for me.

Point Guards
I let my irrational dislike for Mike Bibby influence my pick...gotta go with Theus. I almost didn't, since his tenure with the team was relatively short.

Check the comps on Reggie Theus here:

Some nice names there. Bibby's aren't bad either:

Overall, I'd probably go Theus, Bibby, Bobby then Spud. Maybe Kenny and J-Will beyond that.

Re: Point Guards
Reggie's number are impressive - especially the fact that they never really dropped off.  The guy retired when he was still going strong.  He was only 33.

Re: All Time Sacramento Kings Roster
This is the toughest one. I think Bibby clearly gets top bidding, but I'd go Reggie, Kenny, Jason, Spud and Bobby after that. Kenny was really, really good.

Jason vs. Spud vs. Bobby is a tough battle.

Re: All Time Sacramento Kings Roster - PG
This was the toughest decision for me. The question is who was the BEST point guard in Kings history. When choosing I don't worry too much about how long they were here though if they were here only ONE full season, such as Danny Ainge, I may weigh that in more heavily. There is no doubt that Bibby is the best PG that has played more than 3 seasons for the Kings, however if it was a choice between Bibby of 2002 and Theus of 1986, I think Theus is the better player.

This is a close one but I my top 5 are:

  1. Theus - Two-time All-star. He wasn't with the Kings for a long time but his stats show how impressive an offensive player he was. He was a very good scorer, decent defender, playmaker and a floor leader.
  2. Bibby - No time All-star, but by far the best PG since Theus. No brainer for 2nd choice.
  3. Bobby Jackson - Another close one but we have to remember: Bobby was scoring 14 points a game on average in only 20+ minutes of play. His per 40 min. stats are as good as Theus'. He was the maybe the best defender at his position that we have ever had. I have to put him 3rd. If you look at all the intangibles it's almost impossible not to.
  4. Spud Webb - He scored around 15 points and dished out 7 assists per night on average. He was a floor leader and was fun to watch.
  5. Ainge - Like I said when I led off the post, he was probably the 3rd or 4th best PG we ever had skill-wise but only one year drops him down to 5.
  6. Tie with J-Will and Kenny Smith.
He can shoot, and he looks great in a suit. Hey, everybody - It's REGGIE TIME!

Re: All Time Sacramento Kings Roster - Point Guard
I go with J-Will at #1.  Bibby won more games (#2) and Theus was flat-out better (#3), but I often wonder if there has been a more IMPORTANT player in Sac. Kings history than J-Will.  Even more than Mitch Richmond, he brought a newfound media attention to the Kings, made Sacramento seem like a fun place to other players, and increased the entertainment value of the team tenfold.  Would C-Webb have lasted more than one season in Sac. if we didn't draft J-Will the same year?
Freakin' Kings.

Re: All Time Sacramento Kings Roster - Point Guard
now i loved me some j-will. however, i vote bibby #1 because of the obvious reasons, nothing is better than a bibby 3-point barrage and he turned the team from circus show to contender, but bobby jackson has a special place in mine and most kings fans minds because few players in the history of the game played with as much passion and wreckless abandon than him, also 2002 round 2:game 4 at dallas was a huge turning point for the team in which bobby had a lot to do with.

1a.bibby
1b.jackson
2.j-will

Whether your dominating the playground, the last one to leave the gym, or your big time like Mike Bibby...

Bibby, Williams, Theus, Jackson, Webb, and Smith.  This was a really tough call.
