Retire Vlade's Number?

Ailene Voisin's column calling for the Kings to retire Vlade Divac's #21 jersey hasn't sparked much attention yet. (Maybe few pay attention to Ailene post-Peja?) I think outside Chris Webber, Vlade is the best representative of the glory era to be immortalized. (Maybe when Geoff Petrie goes out to pasture, we can make him a bronze statue or something.)

But Vlade isn't your traditional 'number-retiring' guy. He wasn't a statistical beast or an all-pro; he didn't hit an inordinate amount of big shots. He was, of course, the catalyst -- the first big-name free agent who said, "Sacramento? Yeah, that's cool. Let's go there." He kept Jason Williams on the straight-and-narrow and kept Webber smiling. He taught Hedo Turkoglu to speak English, Peja Stojakovic to live in America, and Brad Miller to bounce pass. He made Rick Adelman's defense look good on occasion. He was our Tim Duncan (without the 20/10). Of course he should be respected with the only honor we can give him. Right?

Poll on the right, debate in the comments.

Re: Retire Vlade's Number?
Vlade is so well liked and respected around here you might not get too much talk besides a collective thought of "of course his # should be retired."  For me, he and CWebb are obvious choices.

As for Ailene, though she happens to be correct this time, who has really ever paid much attention?  I am almost positive the kid who covered the sports beat at my high school paper was less annoying and more interesting.  Can't wait for her next digression into the utter horror of being a poor, helpless, female athlete/coach in the 21st century and the utter hell each of them must go through simply to survive in such a male-dominated, nasty, brutish field of endeavor.

But, hey, she's quite a looker, eh?  (My apologies - that was just plain mean;)

Ouch baby, very ouch.

I stopped taking her seriously when she alternated between "Fire Adelman" and "Retain Adelman" about four times in his last season.

Re: Retire Vlade's Number?
How about we put up a statue of Vlade instead of retiring his jersey?  It could feature him tapping the rebound out to the three point line instead of GRABBING THE F'ING BALL!

Re: Retire Vlade's Number?
That's almost as mean as Kusian's Ailene remark.

I'm starting to worry that the bitterness will never fade.

Ailene post Peja?

Sadly I haven't lived in the Sacramento area for about 10 years now.  Voisin wasn't exactly the Bee's best reporter back in the day, and I doubt a lot has changed, but what happened in regards to Peja?

Sorry, just trying to play catchup.

In Geoff we trust...

Re: Retire Vlade's Number?
In other words, her entire view of the Kings present and future was tinted by the fact she thought Peja should be showered with lily petals and baby oil. (Not necessarily in that order.) This manifested itself mostly as a decidedly anti-Webber bent.

(This stance was never necessarily wrong; the far-from-opaque way she went about arguing her case was the crux of the decision of most Kings fans to generally stop paying her mind, I think. I can't speak for everyone, though.)

Re: Retire Vlade's Number?
To belabor the point, this column is a pretty good example of how Voisin takes a popular stance and mangles so completely by bias and contempt for those who oppose Peja that few can cheer her opinion.

Re: Retire Vlade's Number?
My first instinct was to say no to retiring Vlade's number. The stats just don't merit it. But you can argue (and argue successfully) that "The Golden Age Team" would have never become the selfless, pass first, lovefest bunch without Vlade's super glue. And wouldn't it be fun to be at ARCO the night they hang the jersey.
