Chalupa Squad Redux
So, I was thinking. Maybe not enough, but here goes. It's a first diary, so it will probably suck hard. Sorry.
Every time the fans got excited in the past? Did we get excited because of the bench potential or did we get excited based on the team's marketing genius?
We had the Chalupa Squad and the Bench Mob. God, I can't even remember the rest of them. And, I am fairly certain there were others. Anyone remember their names? Chime in.
The Kings marketing team doesn't seem to be hitting the fans where they want to be tickled, so what does this team need to do to get us to the games?
As long time Kings fans know, we've supported this team by showing up in the Arena for countless (OK, they're countable) years, but this year the numbers are thinner than last year.
This is an exciting, hard-working team. Why aren't we there? Too expensive, or not exciting enough?
Is there anything the Maloof's or their marketing team can provide that would put your butt into a paid seat?
I was talking to a friend the other day and he had been a season ticket holder for 20+ years, in the lower bowl and the upper bowl. But, he gave all of his seats up this year.
I asked him, WHY?? His response was that the team wasn't that good and he'd had trouble getting rid of tickets he couldn't use for two years, and he could buy tickets to the games he could attend.
In his defense, he and his wife are ridiculously busy and can't commit 41+ days per year to this team. In the past I have been a recipient of that inability. (I **-ing miss having that connection).
Who gets rid of season tickets?? That was completely unheard of in the past, but I could see his point. I am certain there are many others like him.
So, what can the Kings marketing department do to help salvage this team? Alternatively, what are they doing to turn you off to buying tickets?
Jeebus, I sound like a Maloof clone but I'm not. I'm simply curious about what drove fans away (losing record, inability to resell tickets) and what could bring them back. Or at least make the season more fun for the occassional "in person" fan.
Is there anything that would draw you to come more than once (or at least make the marketing department feel better about themselves?)
I'd have to say my answer would be price. It's just too freakin' expensive to go see them more than once or twice per year at the current prices. They can say what they want about $5 and $10 SRO prices but if I have to pay $50 for a sandwich and two beers, I'm prolly going to watch at home, especially if I'd rather sit in LL. Either way, it's (a chance) at SR0 + $50, or my preferred seating at $200+ per seat including something to eat/drink.
What would you do to drive more fans into the arena?
What fan appreciation would you show to in-arena fans (chalupas!)?
This team has so much heart, but I still haven't bought the tickets to see them live. I know there are more diehard fans out there like me.
What will it take to get us into the arena?
We live and die by this team, but what the Hell does it take to get our butts into the seats? And, what can their marketing department do to encourage us to do so?

It's a combination
- It's really expensive, and the local economy sucks.
- It's easy to get tickets to any game if you want them. Before, if you didn't have season tix or a hookup, it was eBay. Now, the team has tickets all the way through the tip.
- The team's not a contender, so a lot of the water cooler excitement is gone.
- Every game's on TV, which wasn't the case in the 80s/90s.

Or even the case up until about 2003

Expensive?
I know the team isn't a contender and hasn't been one for at least three years but that hasn't stopped me in the past from buying those ridiculously priced tickets. I guess that might have stopped the casual/buzz/water-cooler fan from buying/bidding up the prices. But this is the first year (allegedly) that the Kings haven't sold out. One game exception.
My friend always sold his at face value when he couldn't use them. It seems most season ticket holders in recent years have used them to help subsidize(sp?) the cost of their yearly nut. So, were many season ticket holders really just a reflection of a bubble economy? Were they just buying (and bidding up the price of) a wanted commodity?
As far as every game being on TV, this is the first year where I haven't gone to even one game in person. Granted, I'm generally a cheapskate but I've always splurged to go see the Kings in person at least a few times every year and NBA in HD got this tightwad to throw down for a new TV once somebody showed me a game shown in HD. Beautiful. Unbelievable. OK, I did still do "best price" shopping.
Whatever the reason, I haven't been tempted yet. Could be the leftover taste from last season. Woo me back, Kings, woo me back.

Ourcold
Seriously, at one point tonight during the game, there was a Kings promo/commercial that I only 1/2 heard promoting a contest to become a guest House Party co-host and I immediately thought of you and TZ. Unfortunately, the only part I caught said to see the Kings.com site and while I did attempt to find a link, it's way too MySpace-y for me to spend much time there.
Really, you should pursue this. Please? Hopefully you saw this too and paid more attention. I couldn't find a link even though I spent 30 minutes looking for it.

Am I qualified?
I'm smarter than Koz, dumber than Kayte. That puts me somewhere between a turnip and TZ (TZ being the smart analogy).
I was once told that I have a face made for radio and a voice made for silent movies...and that came from my mom!
Thanks, but my talent can't be bought (or sold, for that matter). I'm staying right here, unfettered by the shackles of a Maloof Sports & Entertainment sponsored program.
(In case anyone from MS&E is reading this, the last paragraph is what I like to call a negotiating starting point. The ball is in your court.)
