Conduit for sale !

I'm tryin', I'm tryin' to get a full handle on whom might be interested in Mike Bibby over the next month. Let's systemize this bee-otch.

INCREDIBLY UNLIKELY TO TRADE FOR A $13 MILLION PLAYER AT THIS POINT

Boston: They'd have to dump everyone but the Boston Three Party into the mix to add up to Bibby's salary.

San Antonio: No need, no space, no chance.

Detroit: No need, no space, no chance.

Phoenix: No space, no need, no chance.

SET AT POINT GUARD FOREVER AND UNLIKELY TO ROLL WITH BIBBY AS TWO-GUARD

New Orleans: The Chris Paul-Speedy Claxton combination worked nicely, but this team has plenty of shooters and not many tradeable pieces.

Utah: The Jazz cannot possibly go into the playoffs with all three 2006-07 Sacramento point guards.

Golden State: Baron Davis and Monta Ellis are both superstuds, and Bibby might not have a itchy-enough trigger finger for GSW Hoops.

Toronto: The Raptors need point guard help, but more of the cheap-deferential-defending sort.

Memphis: One of these teams is doing its own thing. One of these teams is not like the others. Still, Mike Conley and Kyle Lowry and Juan Carlos Navarro.

OUT OF THE 2008 RACE AND NOT IN DENIAL

Minnesota: Bibby would have to make a statement in blood and offer Mike Jr. as collatoral to ensure he'd opt out for this deal to get done.

Seattle: Unless Geoff Petrie is enamored with Wally Szczerbiak...

Miami: Don't look now, but Pat Riley got religion. This is still iffy placement, however; (note to coolcat:) Riley is fickle.

RATHER UNLIKELY FOR EXTRANEOUS REASONS

Portland: No one sees Portland making a big move this season, right?

Washington: The spectre of Gilbert Arenas' return would preclude a stopgap this magnificently large.

POSSIBILE, BUT UNLIKELY

Charlotte: The Bobcats seem to like Ray Felton, you'd think Charlotte'd be looking for size on the market. Sam Vincent seems to dislike small lineups, negating the dice-roll of a Felton/Bibby/Jason Richardson/Gerald Wallace/Emeka Okafor lineup which would make me wet my pants.

New Jersey: The Nets have lost five straight and folks are saying Jason Kidd's near the end of his floss. But I can't imagine Petrie wants to take that headache, and both Vince Carter and Richard Jefferson would seem out of place. Intriguing if it landed Kidd for a season-and-a-half, though.

Milwaukee: Intriguing because DAMN that team needs to be shaken up. Unlikely because DAMN that team has a bunch of iffy contracts. A swap centered around Mo Williams and Bibby might allow the Bucks to try something new while setting the table for a Seattle-like rebuild in 2009. Williams is signed for eternity.

Philadelphia: Andre Miller for Bibby is essentially lateral, except Miller can pass and Bibby can shoot (or rather, Miller can't shoot and Bibby can't pass). Close contracts. Miller'd be a better fit here, and Bibby might be a better fit there, but the gains would be irrelevant in the grander scheme.

I AM INTRIGUED

Dallas: The Mavericks seem to push this window down a bit every day... but if there's one elite team which never seems satisfied, it is Dallas. It'd take a fairly big overhaul to insert Bibby, who is basically Jason Terry with low socks. But I always have trouble discounting Dallas, especially considering how attached they are to Bibby-type players.

L.A. Clippers: Donald Sterling is insane, which makes the Clippers a possible dance partner. Sam Cassell is expiring and could probably be flipped for another expiring and a second-rounder. It'd be tricky; you'd assume making a run today would preclude Corey Maggette from coming back. But it could be done.

Denver: If Nene's back by the deadline (he just had a tumor removed from his testicle; Godspeed), and playing alright, I could see Petrie pulling a trigger. I've seen three different reports over the years mentioning Petrie's adoration for Nene (who is still 25 years old).

Houston: This would be a big, huge deal with multiple players. It makes my head hurt. Houston has a glut of point guards, but Bibby'd be the best. He could make Yao famous.

L.A. Lakers: Derek Fisher has been good, and those two young PGs are just fine. But the Lakers have long loved/feared Bibby, and quite honestly a deal (for Kwame Brown's expiring and one of those young PGs, and maybe a future pick) just makes sense. No Vlad-Rad, please.

New York: I'm giggling just thinking about it. Free Renaldo!

Chicago: The Bulls have players they don't appear to like, but those players have value. No Hinrich, please. Or Nocioni. Or Wallace. Actually, all of Chicago's bigger contracts make me frown. Where's that third team?

Indiana: Jermaine O'Neal's having a bit of a tussle with the Pacers, and they honestly don't need him. They do need a new point guard (sorry, Jamaal). The Kings might be past the point of trading problems for problems, and J.O. makes huge money until 2010. But still. He's one of the top defensive bigs in the league, until this year he was a great rebounder, and he hasn't turned 30 yet. Petrie loves rescuing faded superstars, no?

Atlanta: The Hawks might make the most of sense of all NBA teams with regards to Bibby. They have the expirings and young talent to pull it off, too.

Orlando: Bibby fits the gunner-around-Dwight philosophy and Orlando has the expirings and young talent to pull it off. Jameer Nelson is a bit of a problem, though.

Cleveland: We've been over it two million times. I'll spare you.

as much as I wish we would...
I doubt we're getting rid of bibby this season. Unless he consistantly plays like the Bibby of old, we're stuck with him until at least next season. The question I have is how many teams are shooting for rebuilding in 2009? I'm all for it and counting down the days until we're out from under bibby and k9 (woof), but if we're part of a larger pool of teams it could just end up in an insane bidding war for a limited number of free agents, then we're right back where we started.

Damn you, TZ
Having lost a good fortyfive minutes on trade machine, I present to the greater SactownRoyalty community this trade:

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/features/traderesult?players=25~61~849~193~933~255~2763~1781~2445~901&a mp;teams=14~10~14~23~23~14~14~23~23~23&te=&cash=

So, it's a three-way trade (props to section for that idea) involving the Kings, Miami and Houston.

So, we get rid of Kenny Thomas, Mike Bibby and Ron Artest (sadly). In exchange, we get four expiring contracts of: Jason Williams, Bonzi Wells, Ricky Davis, Kirk Snyder and we get Louis Scola for three years of rookie-contract-for-a-European-vet. Plus, we get a first rounder from Miami and 2 second rounders from Houston.

Miami gets Ron Artest, then gamble on Kenny Thomas and have Steve Francis (or they could take Bonzi or Kirk Snyder, whichever of the three they prefer) along with outside help from the pg Luther Head.

Houston gets two years of Mike Bibby, which gives them two years to go for a championship with Bibby, TMAC, Shane Battier, Yao Ming and Rick Adleman. If it doesn't work in two years, well then TMAC becomes an $18 million dollar expiring contract and they roll the dice on another combo.Plus they keep Rafer Alston and Mike James (which they can trade Mike James for Kenny Thomas or Mark Blount or another PF in the league - people are looking for PGs - if they want to clear the backcourt and deepen the frontcourt). Justin Williams also might have to be given as a sweetener, or they keep one of the second rounders.

I believe this is a very fair trade, with Miami getting the best deal (they gain much in talent, though have to deal with K-9 for three years), then a tie between Houston and Sacramento, who are both getting a little screwed but the trade is key for their further progression.

Whadd'ya guys think?

Also,
Not sure how stevie will fit into the Miami system, but I think Pat Riley would like the big name more than Bonzi or Kirk (though they can give us Smush and take Bonzi, that also works, actually that's even better). Plus, it's only a year.

This way, we don't have Bonzi drama:
http://games.espn.go.com/nba/features/traderesult?players=25~61~849~193~1823~933~255~2763~1781~2445~ 901&teams=14~10~14~23~23~23~14~14~23~23~14&te=&cash=

And projected Lineups are:

Kings:
Beno/Jason/Smush
Martin/Davis/Douby/Snyder
Salmons/Dahntay/
Moore/Scola/
Miller/Shawes
Looks like we're loaded with talent, but all of that will turn into:
Beno/
Martin/Douby/
Salmons/Dahntay/
Moore/Scola/
Miller/Shawes
And three more draft picks.

Heat:
Francis/Head
Wade/Cook
Bonzi/Wright
Haslem/K9
Shaq/Blount
Their only chance to get a championship team in shape. Bonzi comes up big in the playoffs, and everyone should know enough to defer.

Rockets:
Bibby/Alston
TMAC/James
Battier
Hayes/Williams
Yao/Mutombo

And that should give enough players for Adleman to find his core of eight that he only plays. This does leave them weak at the four. But, like I said - it's a two-year experiment.

Furthermore,
Seriously, I wouldn't be doing this if we could edit posts.

But, we can also send Justin Williams to Miami straight up, and Houston keeps Head.

How do you propose that Houston fields a team.
You have Houston giving up 5 or 6 players and only getting Mike Bibby back. Are they to sign the Harlem Globetrotters or maybe the Power Rangers. I don't know man, it looks like the Kings would be trading  Bibby, Artest and Thomas for Sciola and a first round pick. 2nd round picks are useless and although the cap space would be nice, I don't know that this deal would really help the Kings or the Rockets. Nine or ten player deals are pretty tough to pull off.
We are slipping into the NBA abyss.

I suck, yes.
Yeah, pretty much. I think I crafted another deal where they send Mike James to the heat but keep Snydery, and Rockets get Garcia in turn. The Kings do this deal only for cap space - its pretty bad. We "get" Davis and Williams, but truly this deal only makes sense for Miami. Yeah, its a failure, I wouldn't make it as a GM. I tried though, I tried. Petrie's job is alot harder than it seems.

Francisco?
Unless I missed it we're keeping him too in your scenario.

by coolcatreportdotcom on Jan 22, 2008 11:39 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Oh yeah, sorry
- forgot to list him under SG. Good catch. Yeah, the more I think about this trade, the less likely its to happen. Houston just gets depleted too much to really compete this season.

And, a final note
I'm not advocating a trade with these two teams above any other teams. This was just an attempt to show how a deal with the Rockets could work/make TZs head first. Just food for fodder.

How about Kwame & Sasha Vujacic
for Mike Straight up? That deal nets the Kings serious cap relief (Vujacic would be a restricted FA this summer; a guy they could just tender an offer to or simply renounce over the summer) and I don't see why exactly the Lakers would give up a 1st round pick after getting themselves Bynum, Farmar and Crittenton in recent years. But Brown and Vujacic I could see the Lakers doing if Andrew Bynum didn't go down.

How About
We keep our current core team, including Artest and Bibby, and send our extra players (Spencer, Douby, Jones, Williams, Thomas, etc.) and, if need be, some of our draft picks, to someone in exchange for a shot-blocking, rebounding forward/center.

In other words, why don't we think about improving our team now instead of blowing it up in hopes of improving it later.

I know, it's a novel concept.

by coolcatreportdotcom on Jan 22, 2008 1:48 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Because...
  1. Artest will cost up to $10 million a season if you re-sign him this summer. That would put the Kings over the luxury tax next year FOR SURE and possibly going forward in 2008-09 and 2009-10. And you have no FA flexibility until 2010. (Which means no more Beno.) Also, the Maloofs will not pay luxury tax until they have an arena. So the 'keep all these guys and build for today!' plan really cannot occur, unless you let Artest go for nothing this summer, instead of letting him go this month for at least a prospect or pick.

  2. Only Hawes has value among those players, though Douby might have some too. I mean, you want Dalembert? It'd take Hawes, Douby, and some mythical expiring contract we don't have and maybe a pick.

  3. A team with Martin, Artest, Bibby, and Miller as its core, with relatively few injuries, won 33 games last season.

  4. Utah is six games above .500 and in ninth place in the conference. The current core wouldn't make the playoffs, let alone do damage in said playoffs. Do you enjoy eternal 8th place?

by Ziller on Jan 22, 2008 2:32 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

But... but...
  1. I am not an expert on the luxury tax, but I don't think Artest is going to get $10 million a year from anywhere. He's probably going to re-opt for what he's making now. Naturally I'd like to have the ability to re-sign Beno for Mikki/Salmons-type money.

  2. Actually I think all those guys have some value.

  3. Martin is better, Miller is actually in shape, Salmons and Francisco are better and the team with all its injuries in on pace to equal last year. Naturally I think they are a better team than last year, and they are going to have the opportunity to show that in the next few weeks. The coach is definitely an improvement.

  4. We have games coming up with Utah and Houston in which we can close the gap, and we are down less than that in the loss column.

  5. Good teams often develop as a result of keeping a core group together and improving. This team definitely has some talent, but needs some help up front. Adding just a couple more pieces could push this group to the playoffs this year and into the Western Conference elite next year.

by coolcatreportdotcom on Jan 22, 2008 4:47 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

If Artest made 8 million next year
He would put the team near the lux tax level given the current salary structure (and assuming Bibby isn't moved). That's without re-signing Beno. I don't believe a core of Artest & Bibby can ever even come CLOSE to winning a championship either. I'd be shocked if that incarnation ever own 50 games. Too many flaws in both players. In other words SELL SELL SELL.
