Hollinger's Sacramento Kings Forecast
Kings finish 23-59 and 14th place in the West? And that's ahead of OKC. John Hollinger is showing no love for the Kings.

Oof
Re: Beno:
This was the worst free-agent contract of the offseason; by this time next year I’m guessing he’ll have been shopped to half the league.
I think Hollinger’s putting a bit too much single-minded stock into PER on this one. The guy can shoot with the best of them, and he’s relatively young … both in real age and court time. And the fact that the MLE typically ends up poorly hardly has much bearing on individual MLE signings, right?

What he said in his chat this morning
Q: will Bobby Jackson steal a bunch of Beno’s minutes this year or is Beno the ‘real deal’?
Beno is not the real deal, that was a horrible contract. Jackson could steal some minutes, yes, especially since they can have Garcia initiate offense so Bobby doesn’t have to do his dribble-for-23-seconds-and-then-force-a-J routine.
I asked: How are the Kings going to lose 15 more games than last year, when they lost Artest and Martin for 20+ games, Udrih for 17 and and Bibby for 35? Somehow, a team decimated with injuries landed 3 games under .500 when they were predicted for 30, if healthy.
Well, this year they’re losing Artest and Bibby for all 82. That’s a problem. Basically they have one better-than-average player and a bunch of bad defenders.
Don’t worry about him though, he’s just a hater.

One more time
I’ll note Hollinger had the Kings winning 27 games last season. The team came away with 38.

So if we add
11 to his prediction we get 34 wins. Sounds about right to me.

The Sky is Falling
So Hollinger is pretty much saying the Kings will fall to peices this year. I doubt it. I didn’t read anything positive in that article. I wonder how many teams he predicted correctly (within one game) last year.
He can shoot, and he looks great in a suit. Hey, everybody - It's REGGIE TIME!

What I like about Hollinger
You can pretty much expect what you’ll get from the guy.

ouch...
Hollinger is really down on Beno… its almost as if his new contract is the main reason for his dislike of his game…. the contract should be an indictment of GP, not Beno (and i don’t agree that it was a bad contract under the circumstances… i mean you think Miami would like to have Beno at the MLE right about now?)…. All Beno did was come in to a situation without any knowledge of the offense, the coach, and the players, and we went on to have a nice second half of the season. Hollinger notes the good second half, but seems unwilling to credit Beno’s adjustment to his new surrounding as part of the explanation. I am not suggesting Beno is a great PG, but he is certainly in the same ballpark as the two PG’s in the finals last year…

Championship teams usually have role player point guards and that is what Beno is.
You need good off guard play and good inside play…hence the champions of the 15-20 years since the Detroit bad boys and then maybe the 2007 spurs?

Championship Teams usually have gifted talents that are irreplacable
While Beno is certainly replaceable, he is also not growing on trees. Championship teams are built around the best players in the League usually. The Kings do not currently have one of those.

This might hurt more coming from somebody who knows basketball
Hollinger knows numbers and little else. I’d put his PER among basketball analysts at about 6.41.
I find it hard to believe that Salmons, Garcia, Udrih and Martin are all going to fall off the face of the earth because they had their “best seasons” last year. They’re all up-and-coming players. Of course Beno had his best season numerically, he’s never had that kind of playing time before. He was basically an old rookie last year. Garcia and Martin are closer to approaching their potential but are still on the upswing. And Salmons was actually better for the Kings as a starter last year than Artest. Talented as Bill-Bill is, I don’t see his loss as a major one for this team. Except where it regards locker-room issues and ballhogging.

Could be worse
At least he has us beating the Thunder.

I don't see it
23 wins? Hmmm. That harks back to the crappy teams from the late 80s – early 90s and there’s no way this current team is as bad as any of those teams.

Worse than Memphis and Minny?
Guess he figures both sides got the best of the Mayo/Love deal.

On the plus side...
If Hollinger is right, we might end up with Ricky Rubio next year!

And then we can say hello to the next NBA dynasty
…though, I’m a bit suspicious. We’d probably get sh*tted out of our picks, just like those 10 or so years, in the 80’s, when the Kings never landed a first pick.

What?
You didn’t like that #1 selection in ’89?
Seriously though, just a little luck would be helpful. Just landing the #3 to get Billy Owens changed the course of the whole franchise (Owens begot Richmond, begot Webber).

Ho hum
I’m excited about the team’s prospects this year. Kevin Martin is going to continue to get better.
I think our young post players and Beno are the key to the season and if we are to make the playoffs out West.

douchebag
Napear: "Going in to the final timeout what did the coach tell you?"
Bibby: "I asked the coach if I should go and he said, I don't really know what he said."
