I so far havent seen Hawes play this year
Just read stuff on here and watched highlights from summer league. But he definitely looks like he is trying to play small forward instead of center

Looked like
Spencer was doing a pretty good job of denying post position to Bynum.

Fun game
Beno 8 assists, Spencer 10 boards, JT 15 and 8 all very nice.
Salmons 15 shots 11 pts. , Garcia forcing shots and 20 TOs not good.
Brown came back to earth 1-7 shooting 4 TOs only 2 Ast and he got schooled a few times by Farmar.
Willimas only got 11 mins or so, but was good again 6pt – 4Reb.

Just a few notes about the game:
-I feel Shawes and Thompson both played very well. Every game they seem to be getting more comfortable
-Salmon’s play on the offensive end concerns me. His shot selection is poor. He is disrupting ball movement. He is dribbling without purpose.
-Beno had a nice passing game. I feel the Kings saw more easy, open looks because of his play. I would love it if he could average 7-8 assists this season.
-Was it just me, or did the Kings seem to be able to get an open shot from the left corner 3 whenever they wanted?
by Ball in Cup on Oct 12, 2008 10:25 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Here we go again
We lost the rebound lead in the 3rd quarter, when the team decided it was either a 3pt shooting contest or a game of horse. Hoisting up long shoots with everyone spread out along the 3pt line is never a good idea. Reggie needs to get on anyone who puts up a long ball with nobody ready to rebound.
The Kings don’t have a good enough shooting percentage to not have at least one person near the paint to try to rebound. Their only shooting 37% & 28% from the 3PT line.
Also, Cisco, Salmons, & Brown need to take a tip from Martin. If you insist on drive to the rim with 2 or 3 guys waiting for you, then pull up & shoot a little 10 footer. Every drive to the rim doesn’t have to end with a hard bounce off the backboard.
I question what’s going on with Shelden. His stats per minutes played are the best of the PF. BUT, except for the Portland game where he came in early after Hawes foul trouble, most of his minutes have come late in the game. So, not only is he mostly being used at the Center, he’s also playing with & against the backups & rookies.
I hope we get to see him play some extended minutes at the PF.
Donte Greene’ has been a shock. For a guy who was suppost to be all offense and no defense, his offense looks nonexistent except for the 1st game. 27% and 17% from the 3pt line is scarey bad even for a rookie in preseason. At least 2 of the 6 for 22 shoots that he made were actually tip ins off of offensive rebounds.

All good points
A couple of things to keep in mind -
Williams is still 3rd on the PF depth chart behind Moore and Thompson, and 3rd on the C depth chart behind Miller and Hawes. Once Miller serves his suspension, Williams is a banger off the bench whose minutes come when others are injured, in foul trouble, or Theus becomes exasperated over the lack of rebounding.
Donte’ Greene = 19 years old with one year of college under his belt.

Agreed on both points
This is why you can’t get too excited about a guy who looks really good in Summer League. Even someone like Bynum took three years to show anything. Greene and Williams are both 3 deep at their positions unless someone gets injured this year.

Depth charts can change
as the season progresses. I don’t believe that Mikki’s position as a starter is that secure. JT is already capable of matching Mikki’s stats from last year for 30mpg. As JT gets more familiar with the offense and the starters get use to him, look to see Mikki slide down the chart.
Shelden could see his position change based on the opponent. Especially if Hawes continues to have problems with big low post centers. I can imagine Hawes & Shelden teamed together where Shelden switches to center on defense to keep Hawes out of foul trouble. Even if Hawes doesn’t end up needing help, it’s hard not to see Shelden’s rebounding , blocking, & help defense not being used more regularly.

not sure what you can draw from that comparison, JT has played better in each game, he is improving but he is still short arming his jumper and does not look totally comfortable in the offense

Data too small
Really the number are too small for a good statistical analysis. But, if you look at Mikki’s numbers for last year he scored 8.5 ppg and 6.0 rebounds is 29min. but his career averages are 6.1 ppg and 4.0 rebounds. I can’t imagine the JT could not out do those types of numbers. The question is how will JT effect the flow of the offense of the other starters.
The one item that I found interesting is where the rebound where. Mikki has 8 total and 1 offensive in 49 min of play. JT 18 rebound and 7 offensive in 67 minutes of play. Shelden has 21 rebounds and 10 offensive in 54 minutes. So, JT and Shelden account for 42% of the teams Offensive rebounds and Mikki accounts for 3%.

I forgot Greene
in my previous post.
Your absolutely correct, because of his age and experience Greene’ needs to be treated with patience. In fact, Jt, Greene’ & Brown are all probably running on a full tank of adrenalin and testosterone.
I believe it was Brown who said that one of the vets gave him the advise that “Fast is slow and Slow is fast”. I hope they all settle down soon. But, concerning Greene’, and why I said I was shocked was the total number of air balls and clunkers he’s thrown up. For a guy with his rep and success in training camp, I was really SHOCKED.
