Looks like Porky will be showing the game again. Right now its a Celtics game, but after that’s over, he’ll switch to Rockets/Kings :)

Miller
Your job is to grab boards and bang on the inside, NOT shoot jump shots and 3’s all game! THIS is why the Kings have been killed on the offensive boards. I see everyone running back on defense once a jump shot is made. Nobody’s taking the effort to grab those boards.

It seems we're having the same problem we did last year.
We can not be consistent. I don’t know what it is, but there just isn’t a sense of cohesiveness with team-play.
Look at the first quarter, we dominated for the first few minutes, then we stopped playing until after halftime. Third Quarter is a thing of beauty, now we’re just playing so-so. Some bad, some good. But no consistency

That was the main difference
Our second unit is going to be a problem until the young kids develop. Just the growing pains of having a young promising team.
I am, however, encouraged by the starting unit. I think we can hang with good teams in the league. It’s just a matter of getting some consistency from the young players. We should also consider that we are never going to have all of the youngsters in the court at the same time. It is the case now because it’s preseason but when the season starts we are going to see the JT and Hawes playing with the starters too
by eduardo_m7 on Oct 17, 2008 8:26 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Problems
The Kings made a game of it, but I can’t say I was happy with many of the individual performances.
- The first and third quarters were competitive. The Kings showed a little of the running game in the first and then went completely away from it for the rest of the game. This is a pattern. The only game they stuck with the running game was against UnSeattle/OKC, which isn’t capable of playing defense. I’m not sure where to find the plus-minus, but the team seemed a lot better with Beno and Miller on the floor than without. Miller did about as well as you can on Yao Ming. The biggest difference in the third quarter was patience on offense. The team actually moved the ball and got decent looks.
- The Kings have major problems with quick guards. They’ve been burned in the preseason by Mike Taylor, Eric Gordon, Sergio Rodriguez and Aaron Brooks. You can’t constantly allow dribble penetration AND have bad interior defense. You have to pick one.
- Kevin Martin was on the floor for much of the time the Kings were getting stomped in the first half. Yes, the Rockets are clearly a better team, but Martin was too passive. He needed to step up and be aggressive with his offense with the team struggling on that end. Terrible first half for Martin. He was better in the third quarter.
- John Salmons has been terrible all preseason. He couldn’t do anything against on Artest on either side of the ball. Someone needs to put his jump shot on a milk carton.
- Donte Greene looked more comfortable this time out, especially after last game’s debacle. Good to see.
- Jason Thompson is settling in to a pattern – good energy, decent to good rebounding, a bit of offense. He was also off the bench before Shelden this game. He can definitely build on what he’s doing out there. It’s going to be fun to watch when his shot starts falling.
- Shelden Williams has a bad habit of getting smooshed around the basket. I shouldn’t complain about 4 rebounds in 11 minutes, but I didn’t feel like Shelden was terribly effective out there. Then again, 11 minutes isn’t enough to judge.
- Bobby Brown – Too much shooting and not enough passing. Only one turnover this time, but only one assist to go with it. The second unit rushed shots and didn’t move the ball with him at the helm.
- Brad was solid. He rebounded the ball and made it as tough as he could on Yao. Good work again.
- Mikki Moore has been good throughout the preseason. He’s unspectacular, but steadiness is valuable with the squad of young guys the Kings have.
The young guys have a ways to go and the starters are going to spend a lot of time trying to regain leads this year. We should expect tons of inconsistency, as that’s what young guys do. I just want to see the bench settle down a bit, move the ball and get good shots.

What he said...
Because of Carl, I know longer need to post my thoughts on the game because I pretty much always agree with his take on things.
However, I do have a couple of additional points:
I would love for JT to develop consistency with a face up J (see Karl Malone). He often faces up, pump fakes and then drives. He has had some success, but to be really be effective, he needs to get confidence in that shot. If he can do that, the drive to the hoop will be much harder to stop, and he would be a big part of the future here. Even without the J, I like his activity level. I am guessing he will keep things alive on the offensive glass down the road.
Good to see Donte hit his J, but he needs to develop a middle game. I worry he is a little one diminsional. I’m hoping that with his size and athleticism, he will eventually figure out how to score when his jumper isn’t falling. If he does that, he becomes a Rudy Gay type of player.
On the Artest trade, I have long wondered /daydreamed about what things would be like if we could have gotten Aaron Brooks instead of the 2009 1sr rounder with Donte (I’m sure Petrie asked). Needless to say, after last night, I really wish that had happened. I like Brooks a lot and I can see why Petrie wanted him, and, conversely, why the Rockets refused to make him part of the deal. Having Brooks instead of Bobby Brown as a backup would have really been nice.

Let me expand
Carl’s views again need no additions, but
- Bobby Brown mentioned earlier this preseason the the pro 3 pt line was really far. Someone needs to tell him that he can dribble a couple of steps closer to take his jumpers since he can’t seem to make a 3. Of, course the same could be said for the rest of the team. My guess is that they have the worst 3pt shooting percentage in the league this preseason.
- Shelden again saw some time playing against the opposing center. Driving past Yao and drawing a penalty, and then later trying to defend Yao but having to grab him to prevent a dunk, and saving a pt when Yao missed one of his free throws. With Miller out for 5 games, is Williams backing up Hawes at center? And, will that be enough reason to pick up his option?
- With the guards unable to stay in front of their man and prevent dribble penetration, can we continue to have our worst low post defenders in the starting lineup, no matter how much Mikki’s offense has improved this year. Someone needs to help defend in the paint. Clogging up the middle , altering shots, or dare I say block one.

Regarding Shelden's option
He is under contract for ’08-09. The option that is in question is for ’09-10. So he will be here for this season, barring a trade. The question about his option is whether or not we want to lock him up for next season at 4+ million or let him be an unrestricted FA with no Bird rights next summer.
This is in response to this:
With Miller out for 5 games, is Williams backing up Hawes at center? And, will that be enough reason to pick up his option?
I may have misinterpreted your meaning, if so disregard my post.

No, I understand 09/10 is his final rookie option year.
No, I was wondering if Reggie was planing to play him at Center instead of PF. And if he isn’t going to play much at PF, will the fact that he is the 3rd center justify them picking up his $4.3M option.

Kmart
Can’t let guys like Alston take him out of the game at any time. He turned it up in the third quarter, but that’s the way he should have started the game.
It was a loss, but there are some good things to take out of it. Namely the third quarter, we played well. Houston’s obviously a better team, a championship contender even, with the league’s top defense, so it’s no wonder that the offense sputtered.
I’m worried about Salmons though. He just seems not to fit in with the rest of the guys, and he’s had one decent game the entire preseason (and even that was against the terrible OKC Thunder).
