Game #2: Kings at Heat

Sacramento Kings at Miami Heat, Oct 31, 2008 4:30 PM PDT

Miami gave up 120 points in 103 possessions to New York. New York! I imagine the Kings will score ably.

Of course, the Heat scored a lot of points in their opener, too (115), and the Kings had only brief spurts of defensive acuity against Minnesota.

So, it's a walk-off shoot-out.

Walkoff_medium

The Kings come in as inexplicable seven-point dogs -- I understand Dwyane Wade and Shawn Marion are good, and SoBe is bad for visitors, but this is the Heat, yeah? Hopefully, Kevin Martin and John Salmons can flash Blue Steel (Beno Udrih can't turn right) and cinch up a W.

Game's a 4:30PM PST affair on Comcast SportsNet. Poll yourself!

Go Kings!

Why do most players when they get the offensive rebound

don’t give the ball back to the perimeter. It irritates me so much. I know you wanna surprise the other team but if it is not a good shot why not kick it back

Nah...

I think Kev’s psyching himself out as the self-appointed leader. He’s probably putting too much pressure on himself. Salmons needs to learn how to shut off and play team ball when he doesn’t have the hot hand.

I say dump it in to our bigs (JT and the Hawes).

2nd Half will be different...

Their legs are probably tired and they’re a bit anxious.

I say Salmons aligns himself, Kevin lives the free throw line and we get it within 10 in the 3rd.

Let’s get JT some touches!

Let’s not lose heart. We’re not the worst. I refuse to believe that.

About Speed

This may have been said already, but we admire his upside more than anything. We all have fears that without someone to draw defenders away that he’ll struggle offensively, but we’re only 2 games in. I personally like to save the blinding pessimism until December at the earliest. Until then the cup is half full. You may see it as an entire site fellating a toothpick 2 guard, but in reality we’d just prefer to be positive than overwhelmingly negative. Plus Miller’s still out.

You are the internet version of a chicken – there are a ton of you and you squawk and wake us up in the morning, but bread you and fry you then your actually pretty good. Ketchup and hot sauce? Mmm, mmm goood.

Sing like you fucking mean it, because the chorus of your discontent shall never be drowned, can never be drowned. We must pay attention, for dare we mention our intents you pop-up (an advertisement for the insane, click here for you are our newest winner!).

The Kings didn’t learn their lesson this time either. I was at Dave and Busters so didn’t see the game. Looking at the box score the Kings played with no intensity PERIOD!

It’s early but this team needs to get off to a good start of things could real ugly real quickly. I honestly don’t think our frontline is the problem as much as Kevin struggling.

I’m going to chuck this up as a him struggling as a fluke type thing not something that is going to persist. Kevin is too good to play like this.

Top/Bottom Performers

Top:
1. Jason Thompson – 10 pts, 7 boards, 1 block, 0 TO in 19 minutes
2. Spencer Hawes – 9 pts, 11 boards, 3 steals, 3 TO in 34 minutes
3. Quincy Douby – 14 pts, 3 boards, 1 steal in 24 minutes
4. Sheldon Williams – 6 pts, 10 boards, 2 TO in 25 minutes
5. Bobby Brown – 7 pts, 1 assist, 1 board in 13 minutes

Bottom:
1. Beno Udrih – 5 TO, 2 pts, 2 assists in 22 minutes
2. Kevin Martin – 5 TO, 9 pts, 0 assists, 1 board in 30 minutes
3. Bobby Jackson – 2 pts, 1 assist, 1 board, 1 TO in 13 minutes
4. Donte’ Greene – 0 pts, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 TO in 10 minutes.
5. Mikki Moore – 4 pts, 3 boards, 2 TO in 18 minutes

I say that JT outplayed Spencer because if you average out his stats to 34 minutes, he scores 18 points and grabs 12 boards.

Wow.

I have some good things to say:

  • Spencer Hawes gave everything you could expect out of him. Hawes and Mikki Moore were the only two regulars who looked like they cared at all.
  • Jason Thompson was solid, even though his work came mostly in garbage time.
  • Shelden Williams rebounded and took up space. Again, the guy gave you what he could.
  • Douby looked comfortable out there scoring buckets from different spots on the floor. He took some bad shots, but it was garbage time, so I’m not going to hold that against him. Good game considering the circumstances.

On to the miserable failures:

  • I don’t know if this is the Kings team we’re going to see every night, but I watched the worst team in the NBA play tonight. Aside from the young guys I mentioned, that was an absolutely pathetic performance in every area. The team was obviously not ready to play and made no run at any sort of recovery. It’s WAY, WAY too early in the season to play games like this. I’m going over to DraftExpress.com to check out their top 5 picks.
  • I’m really worried about Kevin Martin. His line tonight was absolutely terrible. He couldn’t hit shots, didn’t rebound, got no assists, threw the ball away, and showed ZERO energy or leadership. One game is an anomaly. Two games is the beginning of a pattern. Sad to say, but Kevin looks more like Peja Stojakovic than Reggie Miller at this point. That is not a compliment.
  • Beno is leading the league in turnovers.

I don’t mind losing, but I can’t stand to see NBA players execute like a bad Junior Varsity team. I hate it even more when I see no effort whatsoever. This is the worst performance I’ve seen in several years.

While this team isn't that good...

We are a LOT better than what we showed today. Beno was drunk as a skunk, and Martin is showing that he can’t handle being the focus of opposing defenses. This team misses Brad Miller, he gives them structure to the offense.
