Question [Scott Howard-Cooper]: Would you go to Sacramento as a backup and be a tutor to Spencer Hawes?

Answer [Shaquille O'Neal]: Who's that?

Q: Their first-round pick last year.

A: Oh, I didn't know that. That's his name? Can he play?

Q: Apparently in time.

A: In time. Spencer Hawes? No.

Let's go Spence

Throw down a couple nasty put backs… and please, please, please, embarrass Shaq at least once with your ridiculous post moves.

A help, weakside block would be nice too.

Damn I’m excited for tonight!

when will the Kenny Thomas Reign of Terror end?!!??

Actually I think that was funny, very funny

Not that O’Neal said something funny, he’s just funny himself.

And that is not a compliment

evolution of dislike

In the early 2000’s, I hated both Shaq and Kobe. Reasoning? They always beat us. Things changed and those two guys started feuding. I sided with Shaq, because I was young and impressionable, and Shaq was so fun and outgoing. Times have changed.

I know see Kobe for the diehard professional that he is (still an a-hole in my book, but I respect his work ethic), and Shaq – for me, at least- is a guy that never really took any of this seriously. Never cared enough to stay in shape.

I leave you with the above: Shaq is an old, fat, bastard.

by misterbrister on Nov 14, 2008 11:20 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I hated/hate them because

When they were good they acted just like that ‘Who?’ instead of treating thier opponents with respect before or after games. I’m not just talking about the Kings here, they NEVER said good things about the players on other teams.

(Except that stupid ‘Iverson is the best player in basketball’ by Shaq nonsense)

Interesting

Seemed to me that Kobe generally had good things to say about the Kings during the real rivalry years. Shaq and Phil? Not so much.

Of course, it was probably lip service from Kobe…

Disagree

Respectfully, of course!

I distinctly remember being tired of the babblings of Shaq, Phil and Rick Fox during those few years. I never believed a word that was coming out of Kobe’s mouth, but during the post-game interviews he was professional…

Hawes will be motivated

Stuff like this just gets Spencer motivated. Every time Hawes blocks a shot or gets a put-back dunk, he needs to look right at Shaq and say “What’s my name?”

But try this:

After every good play he should politely say
‘Hawes, Spencer Hawes’

Irony, sweet irony

In the same interview Shaq talks about how his feud with Kobe, and the smack talk involved, motivated both of them to play at a high level to out do eachother. What the Big Dummy doesn’t realize is that smack talking Spencer makes him do the same thing. So thank you old timer, you can meet Spence in the post tonight, he’ll have your AARP card waiting for you.

Personally

I thought this was the funniest part:

Q: Could you and Kobe ever have existed together or did you have to go your separate ways?

A: Yeah, we could have. We never had a problem. We never had a problem. I swear to God. On the court, we never had a problem.
Q: Don’t even say that. Don’t even try.
A: It’s just that I’d say stuff, he’d say stuff. I think it was all designed by Phil (Jackson). Because if you think about it, Phil never called us into the office and said, ‘’Both of you all, shut the (heck) up.’’ Never did that in four years. He knew that when I read something, I was going to get upset. And he knew Kobe was going to always come out and play hard. So I think it was all done by design.

Gee Shaqarooni, you’re just figuring that out today? I post this awhile back about Jerry Krause (read the blockquote), and the part Phil played. And guess what it was about in 1998? Money. In 2005 when he came back? Money. And does anybody ever play anybody off as well as Phil Jackson does? I mean the guy is a total jerkoff, and a mouth to boot, but he is one hellaciously brilliant coach in terms of motivation and putting together staff. He’s also very smart. I mean, Auerbach came with his warts too in how he paid players, and motivated guys.

God, I love how I said this was all bullshit, and that Kobe was taking the buik of the criticism because Shaq was a big and more “rare”, back in oh, 2001. Nothing seems to change, especially with perception. The lesson in Shaq’s statements? Nothing is as it seems.

I'll be close to the Suns bench again tonight

I always wonder about balancing taking verbal shots at the opponents and when.

But I think I’ll do the ‘Hawes, Spencer Hawes’ thing to Shaq tonight

(when/if warranted)

I'm also thinking

“Shaq, thats called a ‘hook’ shot. Its Center play 501- but its OK, we know you never got that far!”

“Thats a 3 pointer, ok, not really in advanced Center play, just a little extra somthin somthin he has in his toolbox!”

Listen closely on TV, I swear I’m really loud – being the youngest of six Italian kids you had to be to get fed, get heard. I can hear myself on TV sometimes.

(our family reunions sound like a mob is nearby, the poor in-laws can never get in a word. Usually the first comments about some new boyfriend/girlfriend brought in is ‘they don’t say much’ )

I sit pretty close to the security guys near thier bench too

I do want to see the game.

I did call Nellie a prick for snubbing me when I ran into him last year and said ‘Good year Coach’.
Bastard just turned the other way like he didn’t see me.

made sure the whole GS bench heard that clearly.

Besides, its like Ann Coulter suggesting Bill Clinton was gay, it was so laughable even the Fox news guys shook thier heads and cut to someone else.

I wonder: which aspect of his game does SHC think Shaq could pass on to Hawes?

Shaq’s game has always been built upon his tremendous natural gifts. Simply, he is enormous, but still fairly mobile for his size.

So is Shaq going to teach Spencer how to use his night-in-and-out 75 lb. weight advantage to establish position or (failing that) simply push defenders off the block? Is he going to teach Spencer to establish a defensive presence by being a Volkswagen-sized obstacle preventing intrusions into the lane? Neither of those are likely to work for Spence.

Certainly, you wouldn’t want Shaq teaching young bigs how to defend the pick and roll.

Honestly, I can’t think of a single component of his game that is teachable.

It's sad

that a player that was once as great as Shaq has been reduced to this level of blather to reinforce his self-relevance.

Heh. He had a good game

But so far, Hawes doesn’t deal with bigger players very well.

Why

Any particular idea why that is? I know he doesn’t go hard to the rim, but I thought he said he worked on his sky hook all offseason.

To be fair

He didn’t go one on one with Shaq much (that fell mostly to Miller). Oden undressed him in the preseason (twice), but Hawes got the better of Yao Ming.

Hawes still needs to get stronger, but I’m not ready to call him a disaster when it comes to dealing with bigger players. Way too soon for that.

yes he did

he’s playing really well and progressing quickly. (quicker than i anticipated to be honest).
I just think that all that talking about spencer sticking it to shaq was silly. Yes, shaq comments were arrogant, but he’s arrogant, as were many other great players. He’s also one of the most entertaining personalities and we don’t have those in surplus nowadays. So I wouldn’t take his comments seriously next time :)
