Wow

No Nash, Barnes, or Barbosa? We are closer to a win already, but the excitement of this game may be lacking. Who’s going to run the point for them? Stoudemire is still a beast and Shaq is still a douche so the game is not yet a gimme.

Douche?

Why is Shaq still a “Douche?”

I disliked him during the Kings v Lakers years but cmon man, I always found him entertaining and great for the league. No player has done as much for the NBA in terms of marketability in the post-Jordan years than Shaq has ( Only Yao and Lebron can make cases for that). He brought an attitude / personality / talent level to the league that was in need of it at a time when the Dream Teamers were slowly fading out of the spotlight. Not to mention, he could easily go down as the most dominant player anyone of us will ever witness play ball. I could go on for days, but Douche is probobly the last thing I’d call him.

by Hoops916 on Nov 14, 2008 1:41 PM PST up reply actions

Bzzt

MumbleMouth could have been the most dominant player in the history of the NBA, but he never worked on his game or conditioning enough to reach that peak.

Top-10? Sure. Jackass? Indeed. Douche? That’s an insult to the Massengill company, IMO.

Hmmm

Ima have to say I disagree with you on this one Otis.

Name one player who could EVER guard Shaq 1 on 1 in his prime? I can’t think of anyone.

Hell, even Jordan had trouble with Dumars and a (very) select few. Lebron & Kobe can also be mentioned in the same category but I’ve seen the both of them get stopped by excellent defenders one on one over the years. Shaq simply COULD not be stopped barring foul trouble, to me, thats a key ingredient for being considered dominant.

That Jackass and Douche has also done more for charity work than 99% of the league has if what I’ve heard about him is true. Its all relative I guess.

by Hoops916 on Nov 14, 2008 2:27 PM PST up reply actions

He never worked on the fundamentals was the point

Just leaned on his freakishly large size.

Cisco? Cisco? CISCO!!!! #*$!%! !

by lietothegirls on Nov 14, 2008 2:34 PM PST up reply actions

Wrong-

He is easily one of the best passing big-men in the modern era, for which he is often underrated. He has freakishly quick feet / low post spin moves for his size as well. Hell, I saw him freeze Yao with a spin move 2 nights ago. Low post moves and passing ability are indeed fundamentals.

His free-throw shooting % has always been a source for criticism, for which I can’t defend. But to me, thats the one fundamental of his game he never “worked on” as you say.

by Hoops916 on Nov 14, 2008 2:39 PM PST up reply actions

Dunno

I guess if you look at career scoring averages, you’d have to think that SOMEONE was able to contain the Diesel from time to time – certainly moreso than Jordan. Or maybe his lack of concern for his free throw stroke kept his numbers from where they could have been. Funny, I don’t remember guys like Jordan/Bird/Magic just sluffing off those portions of their game, or their conditioning (I’ll work myself into shape as the season goes along…pffft).

I agree he was a great player. But he could have been better, maybe even the best. Regardless, most of his success is due more to his size and athleticism, and very little about his actual basketball skill.

As far as charity work goes, I’ve heard Shaq does quite a bit, but there are plenty of guys who do the same. I doubt he’s done more than 99% of the league, but it will probably be difficult to find statistical evidence to back that up either way.

The Kings should do better tonight as a result.

If the Kings don't win tonight

I’m going to really wonder a lot about this team. For a team that started so poorly on the road, it’s been given a ton of gifts since coming back. At this point, it’s hard not to see why Hollinger has the team ranked so low.

cynical cynical

we have guys out for every game as well (like our leading scorer now and our center the first 5 games and our 6th man forever) – and trying to work in some much young guys . . .

Every game is going to be a struggle w/o a shooting guard, or a back up SG, or a back-up back-up SG

This team is coming, if we can get healthy.

Really??

Wow, that seems…drastic. Don’t forget, our best player and arguably our best sixth man are on the sidelines. This isn’t a gimme, when you’ve got Shaq and Amare on the other side.

I agree that we should win this game, but I’m not ready to throw up my hands and give up on the team if we don’t.

by otis29 on Nov 14, 2008 1:37 PM PST up reply actions

right

as long as they play well I could see Amare and Shaq possibly being dominant enough to pull it out.

After all, we don’t have our SG, our back-up SG or our back-up back-up SG (well, maybe him)

I just don’t want to see Dragic or Singletary winning this, that, I would find unacceptable.

by lietothegirls on Nov 14, 2008 1:52 PM PST up reply actions

No Otis I agree with you

But see the thing is, the point is not that the Kings aren’t fixable. It’s that Reggie can’t do it without having Kevin Martin or Francisco Garcia around. All my point really was. (It’s moot now that the Kings have lost by the time I posted this.)

Dragic and Udrih

By the way, Dragic and Udrih are countrymen and played together with the Slovenian national team in 2006 and 2007. As Dragic is Udrih’s back-up there, I have a feeling they know each other’s game extremely well. Probably a slight advantage for Dragic on that, but clearly Udrih is the better NBA player at this point.

Interesting

I think those mathmatical formulas can be useful, but so much about winning is TEAM play. How a team is contstructed to balance strengths and weaknesses. When a team jells, all those numbers tend to change, go way up – and not necessarily because the talent level has.

I give you the Pistons and the Spurs, both teams essentially based on team defense, whose offensive numbers would not be impressive in that or most systems at all and who individually, though there are some standouts, would not have significantly higher defensive numbers than many others if they were on a poor ‘Team’.

By this measurement

Kevin Martin shouldn’t be an NBA starter and Jamario Moon is an All-NBA player. I recognize that a lot of work went into it, but I’m not impressed with the results.

It ranks Kevin Martin as the worst starting defensive player in the NBA, nearly twice as bad as Mike Bibby and ten times as bad as Beno Udrih.

No way is this game in the bag

I hate to be the pessismist realist here, but they’ve still got Amare and Shaq out there, and no one on the Kings can compete defensively with either player. The Suns don’t need a point guard to beat the Kings. I could play point guard and throw it to Shaq/Amare, let either of them bowl over the nearest King and they’ll get the call/basket.

That’s not to say the Kings can’t win, because they’ve obviously been playing pretty well, but dealing with big or athletic big men is not the team’s strong suit. That being said, the three big man lineup will be well-suited to fight the Suns tonight. Even Shelden is likely to get some burn due to the inevitable foul trouble for the other guys on the front line.

Where's Garcia?

Hey guys – what’s up with Francisco Garcia? All I can find is that he’s “day to day” but it looks like he’s not played this year at all.

What how about Douby? I saw that kid light it up in Vegas. Is he in the dog house?

Garcia – leg, trainer extended his recovery time a bit more.
