No

I voted no, of course. He’s doing a fine job. I’m discouraged by the lack of coherent design in the offense and defense — I agree with Joe Maloof that the team lacks an identity, a “system.” But Theus is a great motivator and a fairly smart in-game choice. Hey, he almost got the Kings to .500 without Martin and Garcia.

And yes, this poll was created to prove a point: you can criticize a coach without thinking they should be gone.

I agree with that statement TZ

But that’s not to say I agree with how Joe went about it. Subtlety would have worked just as well. I think Reggie realizes that this team looks a bit dis-jointed at the moment. It isn’t that hard to figure out. I’m sure Reggie would be able to love to sell this team as “something”, but he’s gotta figure some of these guys out, and there is very little actual “discovery” in pre-season.

Overall, I think this is a personally made fiasco designed to get Kings fans (like me) amped up just to guage where Reggie stands in the community. That’s all I ever thought it was, actually, but whatever. Hopefully this fades away a bit.

I voted no

but think he needs a vrey good “x&o” assistant coach added to the staff and time for the young players to mature, I am still not sold on Beno as the strting PG I do think he would be a great back-up pg

I agree

but it sounds like if he had had an experienced assistant coach he might have been fired.

Thues

is a genius. I like him a lot. I think he is a great coach so firing him would be dumb. Why is this firing even mentioned. i ca’t see anything on firing theus anywhere online. or am i wrong?

Huh?

You haven’t seen all the Joe Maloof stuff?

Wow

I’m surprised to see such a soap opera over Theus this early in the season. Even more surprising, is it’s not of Theus’ making.

I agree with the poster above regarding an X’s and O’s coach. We talked about this when Theus was hired – that he would benefit from a strong, experienced bench coach. Maybe that is what’s needed here, rather than pushing Theus out.

Experienced bench coach

Much emphasis was given by the Kings and the media that Theus would need an experienced bench coach to help him out but one never materialized. I have never understood why Kings management didn’t strongar…. I mean give more forceful guidance to Reggie to hire an experienced bench guy. Reggie would really benefit from having a mentor to guide him through the learning curve. GP should have insisted on this (with the Maloofs) as a condition for hiring Theus. I really, really don’t get it.

by hozr on Nov 15, 2008 4:04 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Trade Theus for expirig contract

My point is that Theus is not the cause, nor is he the cure. As I have mentioned on numerous occasions, only a handful of coaches could have extracted more than 38 wins from last year’s injury plagued team. But like Brad Miller, Mikki Moore and perhaps John Salmons, do you really see Reggie Theus as the head coach of the next great Kings team?

Leave him be and let the man coach out the year. If he is the same coach and the team is the same team at the end of the year, it’s time for all parties to move on.

This is exactly how I feel too

Firing him right now and going with in interim coach gets us nothing, but “erratic front office” news.

It already is kind of an erratic front office

I don’t believe for a second Joe acted on emotion when he said what he did. It was designed to get as much reaction over Reggie as possible.

Even if the team books twenty wins

Theus must stay as the head coach for the entire season. Coaching changes are rough affairs, mid-season ones even more so. To fire Theus now puts the entire Kings management in a precarious situation when it comes to hiring a new guy – to cut off a guy who had eight playoff seasons, then the Musselman ridiculousness, then the firing of Theus – it would be hard to coerce a big name into that situation.

Exactly

Need proof? Google Al Davis + Raiders.

Maloof needs to backpedal and apologize asap. It doesn’t matter if he doesn’t agree with Theus style or what. Maloof is playing russian roulette with this team by shooting his mouth off to the press. It’s time for damage control before this thing catches real fire in the press.

I'd like to see another poll

to go with this one:

“Right now, Do you think Reggie be retained as coach beyond this season?”

I voted no to firing him now, but I would also vote no to keeping him around long term.

You only fire him now,

if you want to tank the rest of the season. I can’t really see the Maloofs wanting to do that as ticket sales are predicated on wins. Although who knows maybe they love them some Rubio’s.

I voted no as well.

Life has been busy and I have not contributed much lately on Sactownroyalty. I appreciate the continuing dialogue that keeps me posted on a day to day basis. The Maloofs are obviously as impatient as any NBA owner. They say they want Reggie to give the young guys playing time but then give the impression that if the team would have lost the home opener then he would have been fired. Kind of like the cake and eat it too scenario. I personally dont think Gavin and Joe know what they want and if they do it changes on a game by game / day to day basis. Their comments about Rick Adleman were a great example…if they liked his system so much then why didnt they retain him? There were other issues they had with him that led to the dismissal. Winning changes everything and until the Kings are considered a top tier team this type of propaganda will surface from time to time. I am putting my money on GP to sort this out by 2010.

Ridiculous

Of course Theus shouldn’t be fired at this point in the season. I think that he should be given the whole season. The team isn’t going anywhere in the next two years anyway.

Comments uncharacterist for a Maloof

The Maloofs are the most PC owners in all sports. Their #1 goal is public opinion. That’s why openly chastizing Theus is so out of character. I can only imagine that the out look financially is so bleek that Joe let his emotions take over.

They are despairate to sell seats. So, they need Theus to do something to get the fans excited. Win game, get exciting play out of the rookies, or implement a system. IMHO the real tell was the two comments about Chuck and the comment on 3pt defense. I don’t think the Maloof’s like Theus’s choice of Person as the defensive coordinator.

With or without a offensive system the Kings are 11th in offense, but they are 28th in defense and 3rd in worst 3pt defense. So, whether it was right to say in public or not, at least Theus knows what he needs to do. Get Greene off the bench and defend the 3.

What?
The Maloofs are the most PC owners in all sports.

The Maloofs shoot off their mouths all the time.

They were going to mow Chris Webber’s lawn.

They publicly undermined Adelman continually.

They pushed the Artest/Peja deal in the media.

These guys NEVER keep their mouths shut, they undercut their coaching staff and front office on a regular basis, and they don’t have the basketball knowledge to back it up.

They’re playboys who own a shiny toy that they can’t keep their hands off of. Six months ago they were screaming at Theus to play the kids, now they’re screaming at him to make the playoffs. They are whimsical, and PC is about the last adjective I’d use to describe them.

Let's go home.-Kevin Martin

I don't remember any of that

except mowing Cwebb’s lawn. But that was in support of Webber, not against him.

Foot in mouth not PC

Actually by PC, I was referring to all their community public relations work. Getting the players out into the community for charity work, their foundations donating money to charities, and basicly giving the impression that the Kings organization was good for the community.

Yes, from time to time they have been known to open mouth and insert foot. But, some of that is too be expected when an owner makes himself available for interviews as often as the Maloof’s do. What amazed me is that by making the statement he did, Joe basicly was saying that the team wasn’t playing well. And, that it was Theus’s fault. Well, if I’m an owner and I want to sell seats the last thing I’m going to do is go on the radio and say the team isn’t playing well.

I think it’s pretty obvious, that the pain from the surgury, or the drugs, or the frustration over the financial situation caused Joe to step out of his normal postitive role and say something he probably regrets now.
