And, by the way, John Whisenant – Monarchs general manager and former head coach – is expected to be named on an interim basis if a change is made.

Tough break, Peja.

Please fax the following to the Maloofs:

Last year after 10 games: Artest missed 7 games. Bibby was out and was replaced with a rusty Beno. Hawes was injured for the first five games, and didn’t make much of an impact upon his return. Martin averaged 27.3ppg right out of the gate. Total record after 10 games: 4-6

This year after 10 games. Our most talented player from last year was traded. Our current best player has not played as well as he should have and is now injured. Our sixth man has yet to play. And our second most important player (who could be considered our most important due to his effect on Martin) missed 5 games for schmokin’ some weed. On top of that, the youngsters have been getting a ton of minutes. There’s really no reason Mr. Maloof should be expecting us to do all that well. But alas, after the first 10 games we are: 4 AND FUCKIN’ 6!

And if you look at all the reasons we have for being crappy, only one can really be attributed to the Reg, and that’s playing the youngsters. Unless he forced the joint into Miller’s mouth, threw Ron Artest off the train in Houston, and took a hammer to Cisco’s leg, the only thing he can be blamed for is playing the youngsters. But, waitaminute… wasn’t he mandated to do so by ownership? With all those reasons to suck badly, we’ve got the same record after 10 games as last season.

Kevin Martin, line 1 holding for you. Your destiny is calling. - Section214

Last night in TZ's Reggie Responds

post I said that I thought that Reggie should be fired now. I didn’t say that because I think Reggie is doing a horrible but rather because Maloof;s inappropriate and poorly timed comments have undercut Reggies authority and now pose a distraction to a team that needs every ounce of focus it can muster.

Before the season began I thought Reggie’s chance of survival was about 50/50. Now I think it’s about 5%. No coach survives those kind of odds. It’s now not if Reggie gets fired but when. It’s not right and it’s not fair but because of their father’s hard work, Joe and Gavin are unfortunately in the position to do what they want with the Kings.

They pushed Rick out and then they hired Muss and Reggie. If they have learned anything (and I think Joe Maloof’s comments prove they haven’t) even the Maloof boys should be dim enough to know that they have no business being involved with the selection of our next coach.

this is insane

Was the Suns game really that disheartening? I watched the Clips game and I was so pleasantly surprised with the team. Sure, no offensive system and two many three-balls for LA, but c’mon, the good coaches know that you don’t force a system onto your team, you come up with a system that maximizes your players’ talents. We’re still finding out what we can do.

Agreed

It was Adelman with his rigid system that sucked. I like Reggie’s ability to think outside the box.

by KingsFan on Nov 16, 2008 11:14 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Considering the players he had available...

…Rick’s system seemed fairly flexible. And while the team was often infuriating for various reasons, it was always fun to watch.

You might want to check the number of wins

that Adelman managed “with his rigid system that sucked.”

Where do these comments come from? The Adelman sucked comments are almost as silly as the Chris Webber sucked comments that pop up around here every now and then.

Rick Adelman is an outstanding NBA head coach that will always have a job whenever he wants to have one.

by Kusian on Nov 16, 2008 1:53 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

The rigid system is what sucked

Not wanting this to become an Adelman thread but since we are on the subject, Adleman has to have the record for having the most talented teams to NOT have a championship. You really think Houston will go that far this year? Don’t bet the farm on it.

by KingsFan on Nov 16, 2008 2:10 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Nope

They are not the best team.

Just like Portland wasn’t the best team. Just like Sacramento wasn’t the best (playoff built) team back in our prime. (Well, 2002, perhaps, but Game 6 happened.)

Adelman’s offensive system is clearly not rigid. Why do you think offensive players love playing for him. Now you can make an argument that his player rotation while here was too rigid.

by Kusian on Nov 16, 2008 2:41 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Never played rookies

Adelman wouldn’t play a rookie if his life depended upon it. Put Adelman in the position Theus is in where he had to play the rookies and he wouldn’t have a winning record. In fact, it’s his dependance on vets, that made it possible for so many Kings draft pick to be playing around the league.

And that In Theus' downfall

The team is in a serious identity crisis. There’s no stability in any position here. When players don’t have a defined role on a team, it often leads to a confused team. That’s what I’m seeing here.

by CloudyEyes on Nov 16, 2008 4:33 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Was it really that bad?

Maloof said that the 3 point defense sucks (he’s right, I think that we rank about 28th), and he would like to see us compete for a playoff spot while playing the youngsters. While that might not be realistic, isn’t that pretty much what we want – to see the youngsters play and perform at a high level?

While the forum may have been less than ideal, I fail to see what was so bad about Maloof’s comments. He was not calling for Theus’ firing (not once did he say anything about firing Reggie during this candid interview). If Maloof is guilty of anything, it’s that he came out and spoke like a fan. I’m OK with that.

Now, I will agree that this is a very bad thing had it not been conveyed to Theus privately. But I’m guessing that Reggie had heard from management in regards to Maloof’s concerns.

Theus’ contract is up at the end of the year. He now has a crystal clear set of guidelines from his employer in regards to what it will take to get a new contract. As an employee, I might not appreciate the fact that this has been aired in public, but I would be happy that I know exactly where I stand and know precisely what my “quota’s” are.

by section214 on Nov 16, 2008 11:25 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Section,

I don’t have a problem with whatever Maloof may have told Reggie behind closed. If you parse what he’s saying it appears he’s saying is: I WANT IT ALL! Spoken like the spoiled rich kid he is. We don’t even know who we have yet.

Implicit in a 2 year contract is the message is “Get the results we want or don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.” Reggie had to know when he signed his contract that he was going to be under constant pressure from the git go. In a rebuilding situation does it really make sense to put the coach in a win at all costs position?

If Reggie is only finding out what is “quotas” are now that only points out to the Maloof’s incompetance. Reggie should have known what his goals for the 08/09 season where within a couple of weeks of the end of last season. I agree with Holmdel’s post below, Maloof’s comments at this point do nothing to advance the King’s agenda for this season.

Precisely

It is the tone and demeanor that screams, “I’m used to getting what I want” that really turns me off.

by sactown on Nov 16, 2008 4:11 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

the part of it that I think is insane

is that suddenly we’ve got a countdown to firing Theus in the Bee and also on this site.

The organization would be better served, I think, letting this team play out this year, with their current coaching staff, and then making a change in the offseason. We’ve had circus BS for each season since E-Muss. We can use a break from that.

Life is every mammal's journey from very very wet to very very dry.

Joe Maloof is not the businessman we thought he was

How do his comments put more butts into the seats? How does even considering Whisenant sell more tickets? I think Big Joe needs to stay away from the media at least until his meds wear off.

Where did Joe Maloof say anything about Whisenant?

I’m just asking, because I’m afraid that I missed it. I saw Voison mention it, but not Maloof.

Not at all

I’m just trying to get to the gist of what you’re saying. And I say that with zero sarcasm or pretense.

I have listened to the Maloof interview three times now, and I really don’t get the furor. This could be because I’m an idiot (that seems to be the reason a lot around my house), but all I got out of the interview is that Maloof has noted some of the same areas that we have as areas for improvement, and that the coaching staff needs to put an emphasis on it. He does not threaten Theus with firing, though there is certainly the veiled threat of no new contract.

I never heard Whisenant or any other coaching or GM prospect brought up during the interview.

This interview has certainly initiated some lively conversation amongst writers and fans, and I’m always all for that. I just want to make sure that we are making the distinction between what Maloof actually said, and what others perceive those comments to mean.

I am in agreement with you

and it was also my initial take on the Maloof interview. When I heard it my first reaction was that it did not seem to be as bad as the Bee was spinning it. But the more I read (the Bee and here) the more I began to be alarmed. But now I see that we are of a very similar mind on this.

My conclusion is the Maloof should know he cannot go to the media talking like that because every word he says will be blown out of proportion and writers will be adding their spin and next thing you know the entire Kings organization will be in total disarray, the players included. Loose lips sink ships.

I’m now expecting Maloof to issue a press release that none of his comments are to construed as anything but the blatherings of a fan (like you say) and not meant to be taken against Theus or Petrie or anybody else.

Did this team REALLY overachieve last year?

And is it REALLY overachieving this year? Most of us seem to default to that position…but would another coach have achieved similar (or slightly lesser) results recordwise yet have us in better shape for the long haul at this point?

I dunno, I’m just asking the question. Honestly, I’m not so sure at this point.

Good questions

I don’t think we’re overachieving so far this year. The four wins are against teams that finished below us in the standings last season with the exception of GS and they are a mess right now.

Last season. Did we overachieve or did we just underachieve less than the season before? That’s a tougher question.

Underachieving at this point

Both the Phoenix and San Antonio games were winnable. The first week of the season was a debacle. The next week of the season will likely be a debacle. I think you have to expect inconsistency from a young team, but I’d argue that the Kings have underachieved so far.
