Douby or Not Douby? that is the question
Ahh, the old Bard of Avalon knew a thing or two about coaching. As the screws turn on the Coach Theus watch the dilemma presents; do you coach for wins like the owners ask you to do or do you play the young guys like the owners want you to do. If the desire is to develop the young guys as it is “a rebuilding year” then who’s future is more pressing that that of “Q”? The guy is a shooter who dazzles in practice now in his not-picked-up-option 3rd year. However, there is apparent little truth in the adage: Practice makes perfect. In fairness, is the Rutgers product getting a fair shake? Is he getting more chances then he deserves? And now that Owner Joe is making his breath more visible down the neck of Reggie Theus who’s decision is it to make? As it has been pointed out already, at least this young season has been anything but boring and predictable.

The problem is, we didn’t extend Douby’s contract, which would be a signal from the front office that he’s not part of our long-term plans.
So if Theus is being told to win now, why play Douby, especially so many minutes down the stretch when his conditioning is not where it should be, and he hasn’t been able to practice in the defense and offense?
And if Theus is being told to develop the players who ARE in our long-term plans, why play Douby significant minutes at all?
Something is rotten in the state of Denmark (to stick with your Shakespearean theme).

I would have liked to have seen Bobby Brown...
I agree- Douby is the past, not the future so why not give Brown a chance to lose this one at the buzzer. Bobby is a better ball handler, not quite the pure scorer of Douby but a better shooter and had got 3-4 from th field on the night. Douby is a streak shooter who has to be feeling pretty low right about now. When Martin and Garcia come back I don’t even see him being active for most games.

Wow!! Its amazing how many haters be on here… But when the guy does good, I dont want yall praising him at all.. keep hating him.. LoL
I think, as betweentheeyes declares,
that noone is hating Quincy here, everyone actually talks about him with a lot of respect (compare it to Kenny Thomas’s debates, or even some talks on Ron Artest form the past) – and some love.
Respect however does not suspend scepticism. Do Kings really profit from having QD in their roster? A question of the same importance – does QD profit from being a King? Is there a solution that might help both sides, being it even a trade?
Yes, when the guy does good, I will be very happy for him. If he helps Kings by that, I will be even happier. If Kings do good, however, and no matter whether QD is there or not, that’s when I will be the happiest.

I think QD's best prospects are somewhere else like Orlando or a team like that
He needs something the Kings just don’t have readily available for him: A roster spot.

I have been harsh...
I don’t like the “haters” word choice but I have definitely been a Douby detractor. I guess he is fine as a 11-12 guy on the bench but I personally believe that he has never been able to make the leap to NBA player status. Just because you are in the NBA doesn’t mean you are worthy- rookie contracts guarantee between 2 and 4 years for players while teams try and find out if the guy can play. My personal opinion is that Douby is a fringe NBA roster filler who would be better served playing in Europe of the developmental league. Sure, he does certain things well but I don’t see his skills ever commanding NBA minutes. QD has had a handful of very good games in his career but I believe that his game is predicated on him hitting low percentage shots (27’ three pointers), he lacks the ball handling skills to play the point, the size to play the two, and the conditioning to make it through training camp without getting hurt.
Let’s face it, Kevin Martin became an NBA regular by busting his ASS and improving every year, same can be said about Garcia and even Hawes at this point. I haven’t seen the growth required to stay in the league out of Douby. This week is a classic example, I don’t blame Douby for missing two crucial shots but I do blame him for not having his body ready for game service. Ankle injury or not, there are many ways to stay in shape to play 20 minutes of basketball, regardless of level of competition. When Martin and Garcia return from injury, I see a long and frustrating final season as a King filled with inactives and DNP-CD for Douby’s.

Nope

What yall fail to understand is, the man never got a chance to develope.. Why? Because of the coaches he’s been playing for.. Since he came in, he’s had two coaches that can’t even implement their system with this team, and didn’t know what they were doing. On top of that, they were coaching for wins instead of developing their players. How do you expect a guy to progress when he hasnt got playing time and experience to develope? Isnt that how you develope? Through playing time and experience? You always hear about how well and hard he plays in practice, but when game time comes they don’t play him. Can you fault him for that?
Your comment reminds me of Jim Les & Jerry Reynolds
In his book Reynolds Remembers, Jerry saw Les cheering and hollering. Jerry couldn’t figure out why and he walked up to JIm," Why are you celebrating." Les answered," I’ve scored on every chair in every arena now."

Actually that was Pete Chilcutt not Jim Les
Still funny though.
After one shootaround on the road, Pete Chilcutt was real giddy after a shootaround on the road. “I did it,” He yelled. “Pete, what the hell are you talked about?” I (Jerry Reynolds) asked? “I’ve scored on a chair in every arena in the league now!”

To JJHam and his comments
You’re a hater.. Look what you said.. You claim he isnt in condition? He came into training camp well in condition.. He happened to get hurt in practice, how can you fault the man for that? You sound ridiculous and bias. Garcia & Martin is hurt too. So does that mean you’re going to blame them for the losses the kings have because their bodies are not in condition? The man went out there and played his hardest on a hurt ankle and you blame him for not having his body in condition. Despite how you feel about him not belonging in the league, I begg to differ. The kings is clearly not the best team for him. The kings first off need a good coach, a veteran coach to come in and turn this team around. They messed up by letting Adelman go, and you can tell the Maloofs kind of regret letting him go now. Reggie Theus only looks good because his players are giving effort and competing. But where does he really get credit for? The players are the ones going out there getting it done am I right? It doesnt hide the fact that there’s confusion within this system that Reggie is trying to incorporate.. Douby already knows he wont be here next year, but he’s not crying about it. He’s still working hard and still focus on making this team better. He’s living in the present, not future. As a coach Theus can us this year 2 show how good he can be at developing his players. I think since making the transition from division 1 to the NBA, he lost site of that because in college you do more teaching and developing. He was worried more about getting wins & losses. So for now, Douby is the best option at the two because Martin is hurt. Unless you want to put Donte Green who clearly isnt ready.
Reality
Sometimes you have to just look at the results and call it what it is. This is Quincy’s third year, and it’s not like he hasn’t gotten a chance. If he were playing for Adelman or Don Nelson, most likely he’d have been encased in a glass box with the words “BREAK IN CASE OF EMERGENCY” on it. Theus has given Quincy a lot more PT than what he probably deserved, both this year and last year.
I’d ten times rather see Donte Greene in the lineup than Douby, because Greene still represents some potential future payoff. Douby does not.

I don’t understand him saying he ran the treadmill so hard before the PHX game (because he thought he wouldn’t play?) that his legs were heavy by the end.
Its his JOB to be ready, to expect to be called on, especially if he looked down the feakin’ bench and saw how few 2 options the team has right now.
Get your freakin’ treadmill work in after the game, after you don’t get called on.

Hater....
Maybe you don’t quite understand my dislike of your use of the the word. Hate is not a word I like to use in reference to NBA players, the term “hater”, to me, has way too many social and political undertones and I prefer to state the case of why I am not a fan of Quincy Douby without the use of it and I refuse to allow you to attach those words to my posts as if you know me. As for your rebuttal…Quincy Douby is on the same team as Bobby Brown, Jason Thompson, Kevin Martin, Francisco Garcia, Spencer Hawes, etc., all young players either drafted or in Browns case signed as an unrestricted free-agent by Geoff Petrie. All of these players have developed to a level that they are viable options on any given night under the Theus regime.
Secondly, I never stated that Douby was the reason the Kings lost, here is my quote:
I don’t blame Douby for missing two crucial shots but I do blame him for not having his body ready for game service. Ankle injury or not, there are many ways to stay in shape to play 20 minutes of basketball, regardless of level of competition.
In response to this you wrote:
Garcia & Martin is hurt too. So does that mean you’re going to blame them for the losses the kings have because their bodies are not in condition? The man went out there and played his hardest on a hurt ankle and you blame him for not having his body in condition.
And I will respond with no, Martin and Garcia are both hurt, they are not playing and can’t possibly be blamed for the two loses while Douby, cleared to play by the medical staff, came into the Phoenix game and in 19 minutes of play completely ran out of gas, causing him to miss open jump shots, including the game tying shot at the end of regulation at which point he had logged a mere 14 minutes of play. If anything, I believe that Theus showed too much faith in Douby and probably should have gone with either Bobby instead.
Again, I don’t hate Douby, I wish he would excel and help this team because I am a Kings fan first and foremost. I am a little tired of the Douby apologist, this guy was a first round pick who shot over 46% from the field as a college senior but has yet to crack 40% as a pro. Other players have come into the same system as Douby and become legitimate viable NBA options which he is not at this moment in time.

To be fair
14 minutes of continuous play is usually reserved for starters. There is a thing called “game shape”. I would expect a bench player to be pretty gassed if put in for 14 continuous minutes, let alone a player making his first appearance after an injury. I wouldn’t put being out of gas at the end on Douby, I’d put that on Reggie.

Absolutely Reggie's fault
He should have pulled him when he saw his jumpers start to clang off the front of the rim.
But for JaRD to say Douby hasn’t had his chances because ADELMAN isn’t the coach? Seriously, Adelman is noted for being horrible at developing young players. Gerald Wallace, anyone?
Sounds to me like the Dude is repeating the excuses Douby is making for himself.

I never said Douby doesn’t try, and I respect you standing up for him but as a player he needs to show progress asap. If you have his ear tell him good luck, we are pulling for him to be productive in whatever minutes he plays and that we hope he comes out firing and forces Theus to play him. The next two games will go a long way towards showing the coaching staff what, if anything they have in Douby as a contributor. I’m glad its you posting and not QD because the last thing he needs is to let the bloggers get him done. Hopefully he makes a good showing, helps the team win and gives either the Kings or another NBA GM something to think about come free agency.

I was actually pleased to see Q come into the game a couple of days ago and no I don’t blame him
for missing the first 3 pointer, the 2nd not so much.
The problem with Q as many mentioned above is that he hasn’t really been developed/but as many entioned above he hasn’t grabbed his coaches throat with his game play and by his play demanded to be put in. He also hasn’t shown the work ethic that KM has.
Ultimately he is the perfect player for the European game, shorter season, focus on scoring, etc.
I always have a good feeling for our draft picks whether they stick or not. If as a coach you have choice between working double e and BB into games or QD who do you pick? I wish QD the best, I say go play in Europe, do your thing, get your confidence back and then maybe you can come back and be vauled enough to come in at spots 9+ off the bench and be ready to be a NBA plyer.

I agree with that
No mistakes in the tango, darling. Not like life. It's simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get tangled, you tango on
Based on...
the “handful of good games” he’s had? I think you’re confusing potential with production. He’s a legit fringe player based upon his production to date, but get’s a pass because he’s only in his second year, was a 1st round pick, and looks great in practice. The league’s littered with guys like that.
The talk has been of giving him opportunities to shine/produce. Well, he’s had his chances but couldn’t put more than 1 good effort out any time. It’s called inconsistency. Of course, he’s young and youngins aren’t consistent. So why did KMart and Cisco latch on eventhough they were inconsistent, too? JT’s certainly been inconsistent this young season. They brought something to the game other than good practices. What’s QD brought to the game?
The Kings can find lot’s of QD’s around – guys get mid-levels and veteran minimums all the time who produce and contribute more than QD. It wouldn’t hurt to keep him around after this year, but at a reasonable salary, and probably only for 2 years, enabling him to tap all of that great practice-time potential.
Douby is in his 3rd year
But otherwise I’m not really sure what the point of all that was. This is Quincy Douby we’re talking about. And I’ve said many times, here, that I think Douby’s shot at staying in the league is someplace else, particularly a place like Orlando that could take advantage of his abilities.
No mistakes in the tango, darling. Not like life. It's simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get tangled, you tango on
Abilities?
Can he shoot? Very well in practice and rather streaky in the game.
Can he defend? Decent, gives mostly good effort.
Can he pass? Average.
Can he rebound? Average.
Can he handle the ball? Average.
Block shots? Wave a towel?
Which if his abilities makes Orlando better? Is he an upgrade to the great JJ Reddick? Is the Kings’ system wrong for QD? The system doesn’t take advantage of which of his abilities?
I would absolutely love to see QD, or any of the current Kings, excell and make our team great again. Not every member of the team is able to do that (K9, Shelden, and QD). These guys have limited abilities. I don’t think any team other than the absolute most desperate would need these players.
Yes he's an upgrade to Redick
Other than that, why are you still arguing?
No mistakes in the tango, darling. Not like life. It's simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get tangled, you tango on
Quincy as a 7th/8th man
off the bench is worthy of a discussion, I believe.
I strongly disagree that he has that ability, based upon what he’s shown so far. Also, I just can’t buy an argument that says a different team can make better use of his abilities, when has hasn’t shown abilities worthy of much consideration.
Just saying…

Seems that while other players have improved their games, and have become productive players that have conditioned their bodies and added elements to their overall skills as players, Douby looks the exact same as when he entered the league. Reminds me alot of Mikey Moore, no strengthening excersize, no cardio conditioning, no real effort at improvement. He may improve over time, but this young team is growing together, and it looks now like Greene is going to get a lions share of the minutes with his rapid improvement. I see Douby getting either traded or just let go. Not enough there to warrent reupping his contract. Not alot of trade potential either. Just an average player that needs alot of improvement
Rapid improvement for Donte Greene
He got his first non extended garbage time mins tonight. The Kid will be okay. Quincy is going to have work very hard to just stay in this league.

You don't like the style he has
There’s a difference. I just don’t think he’s going to have a future with the Kings at any point, unless that magical twist of fate just happens that way. Does he still have a career in this league? That’s debatable, and the reason I said Quincy will have to work very hard, is that not too many people will be high on him. IF he works hard he can have a very productive career in the NBA still I do believe.

I can't wait for the Sheldon Williams thread that looks lust like this one.
Hot dogs, get your hot dogs.
I know Quincy & Shelden could have NBA careers
It’s just not with the Kings. That’s all I ultimately care about JJ.

For Douby's sake
I hope so.
But I have no idea what makes you think this is the case.
