Donté Greene: 34 minutes, 15 points on 9 FGAs. His matchup, Peja Stojakovic: 7 points on 8 FGAs.

There are a lot of heroes when you beat a legit title contender on the road missing two starters and your sixth man. But let's give the rookie his daps.

DONTÉ GREENE IS READY FROM DAY ONE!

Remember when Douby said he wasn't ready for the long minutes?

Saying he wasn’t playing as much so he wasn’t ready for those long hard minutes…

and here comes a ROOKIE telling everyone he comes prepared everyday! First to practice? Ready whenever he gets called?

Hey Douby? Take a lesson, hopefully you’ll learn on another team. Because you’re not getting another chance on this team now.

Donte was great, he’s still has some growing to do…but people, we have a really good young player on our hands with tons of potential.

Great point

The only caveat is that Douby was coming off an ankle injury and couldn’t really run.

If he keeps this up

Jerry will be able to use “Dont’e is leading the Kings to Greener pastures.” which will probably make my head explode like the guy in Scanners. Although I’ve survived “Hawesome” so anything is possible.

He certainly showed something tonight. All I saw before was a guy shooting threes. Also, he was not bad on defense, he even took a charge. Hopefully it’s a sign of things to come like Hawe’s game against the Lakers was.

I can only hope that based on Donte's play

that Jerry is driving us nuts with his Jerryisms all season long.

Great interview with the kid afterward

The thought of a non-foul plagued Spencer Hawes excites me, and Jason Thompson is hard work personifed, but there is something about Greene that I just love. Call it flavor, call it charisma, this kid could become Francisco Garcia with even more talent.

Do you mean he could be an all-star?

Truthfully I see that between Donte, Shock & Hawes.

What I like

Even when the kid isn’t playing, he is fully engaged. Vocal from the bench, very involved during the timeouts, always encouraging his teammates. He’s an easy guy to root for, that’s for sure.

He’s the first guy to jump up and cheer his teammates and the first to greet them after timeouts. I love his attitude.

More than anything, it’s pretty amazing to me he made it 34 minutes and didn’t look tired at all. He looked like he could’ve played all 48 with a big goddamn grin on his face the whole time.

by jeremy548 on Nov 20, 2008 12:06 AM PST reply actions   1 recs

We’re maybe inconsistent, unbalanced, unpredictable… but there’s so much talent and we don’t have to wait 3 years for these kids to grow and play 25 mins. Seriously I had many years to enjoy a Kings season so much.

by ZenBaller on Nov 20, 2008 4:11 AM PST reply actions

That's the great thing

There is no denying Petrie’s ability to find young talent. These guys can flat-out play basketball.

Whether it’s Reggie here or not (seriously, I hope it is because I think he’s the right personality for this team), it’s going to be enjoyable watching these kids grow together.

Reggie

Seems to be really good with the young players. He coaches them on the way in, on the way out, all the way up and down the court. Compare that to Adelman and Muss, who were always sitting, chin in hand.

by LeaguePassAddict on Nov 20, 2008 8:52 AM PST up reply actions

Interesting

I felt the same way about Adelman. There’s no denying he’s a very good NBA coach, but I don’t miss that bland ambivelance on the sidelines. I have no doubt that players enjoyed playing for Coach Adelman, and thrived in his style of offense, but I don’t know how many would go through a wall for him. Maybe that’s what defines a coach who can get a team close but not over the hump.

Theus is different in that regard – I think he’s got the kind of charisma that guys like Adelman and Saunders don’t. If he can get up to speed on the X’s and O’s side, I think his potential ceiling is higher.

Or...

even if he (or Petrie) can bring in an assistant to be his X’s and O’s guy. Phil had Tex Winters forced upon him by Jerry Krause and that seemed to work out okay.

Assistant coach

I think one of the things the Maloofs/Petrie concerns is that they think Reggie was too arrogant to bring in a vet assistant – and it cost the team. Too many ‘buddies’. True or not, I think it bothers them – see Joe’s comment on Chuck.

by hozr on Nov 20, 2008 12:43 PM PST up reply actions

Honestly

That seems like a pretty tough indictment of Adelman.

If the Kings players don’t shoot 16-30 from the line or 2-20 from the 3 point line in game 7 or 476,047 (estimated) unfair fouls weren’t called for the Lakers in Game 6, Adelman would have a ring.

by ForThree on Nov 20, 2008 11:18 AM PST up reply actions

Making assumptions

The Kings would have been in the NBA Finals, no guarantee of a ring (although I think we all believe they would have beaten the Nets).

Sure, there were bad calls and bad foul shooting. But there are hundreds of variables that affect the outcome of any particular game. In theory, you could blame them all on the players/officials. What point would there be to even care about the coach?

The results of his long career tell us that Adelman is a fine NBA coach, but maybe doesn’t have what it takes to take his team over the top. He was close with the Blazers, close with the Kings, and ran a 20 game win streak last year with Houston, but that team fizzled out down the stretch.

My point being, I don’t know if Reggie can get this team farther than Adelman, but Reggie seems to have an outward confidence and fire that Adelman lacks – and I wonder if that would rub off on his team in a manner that would get them to achieve great things (or the greatest things).

Your opinion of Adelman isn’t exactly the same as mine, but certainly its a very reasonable one.

I guess my point was, I thought the Kings that year were coached well enough to win the title, but they didn’t.

I have a pretty dim view of the emphasis placed on titles anyway though. For example, I wouldn’t have thought any more of Karl Malone if the Lakers team he was on won a title. I would have thought more of him if his Jazz teams had won one.

Its an interesting discussion. Personally, I think Adelman is a great coach that will always be underrated (unless he does get a title), but differing opinions make for interesting message boards.

Sloan

Because he could pick Adelman up by the ankles and beat Neslon to death with him.

Don't think so

Nelly is big, usually slightly intoxicated and has crazy eyes. I’ve got Nelly FTW here. Sloan places, and Adelman whines his way to a show.
