Game #14: Blazers at Kings

Portland Trail Blazers at Sacramento Kings, Nov 21, 2008 7:00 PM PST

Kevin Martin, Francisco Garcia and Mikki Moore will all sit. It appears Donté Greene and Jason Thompson will start again. That'd make Greg Oden and Spencer Hawes the first bigs off the bench for their respective teams. <cough>

The game's at 7 PM PST. The win in New Orleans was a big one, but beating the Blazers tonight might net Reggie Theus a 20-year extension. Let's go Kings.

Kicking the crap outta the Blazers would be cool. Odenizing Oden would be a nice double whammy.

I'm disappointed with the end of the half

The Kings lost their focus, and how they were running their sets. They went too much 1 on 1, and unfortunately, the downside of that was they lost the crispness they were running earlier in the qtr. It could have been worse, but the Kings were not 6 points down at the half with the way they played. I would not be shocked to see the Kings lose big if only because Hawes & Miller just can’t match up with LMA the way JT can. I fear Reggie won’t go to that matchup nearly enough though.

Since Oden came back, our rebounding has been really good.

Everyone seemed to pick it up with the big guy in there. But the Kings are making us look like we don’t know what a basketball looks like. “What’s that round thing coming down from the hoop?” “I don’t know, but those guys wearing white seems to want it.”

ugly. JT, Spence and Bobby Brown with decent games. Not a lot to like other than that.

That was a fun game

Blowout aside, I thought our offense was running extremely smoothly when Spencer and Jason were involved. Jason in particular was taking it right at Oden, dishing to open shooters (who did not make their shots today), and finding cutters. Spencer shot the ball well, but wussed out against Oden in the post. Come on, Spencer, you’ve got to take it TO the big guy, not AWAY from him!

Brad Miller/Mikki Moore/John Salmons are officially expendable.

There is no doubt about it

That team was far superior, and more cohesive than the Kings. Interesting how that is, considering their young talent as well. ;)

(DISCLAIMER: portland fan rant)BLASPHAMY!!!

THAT’S JUST NOT TRUE!!! Sure we bought the picks from the suns for Fernandez, and Sergio, but they were there to be bought, and while buying them, we also cut our cap significantly…shipped out Z bo, cut the length of salaries, and at the end of this season we will have enough cap space to sign a nice free agent and re-sign our core rookies to extended contracts, it’s true that our owner has shown that he is willing to spend money on a contender team, but we have reduced payroll to become better….if that makes any sense.

You got lucky

Getting the first overall pick is luck. Which doesn’t even include that Chicago was willing to deal Aldridge in the first place. Or that Boston didn’t want Roy. It happens, so chill. It wasn’t a criticism, and I’m not downgrading anybody or anything by saying it. Luck is part of the process. Some teams get lucky in obvious ways; some in others not so obvious.’

As far as your own comments, some of which are flat out lies, and others are exaggerations, let’s look at this piece by piece.

(DISCLAIMER: portland fan rant)BLASPHAMY!!! Go ahead rant, it’s not blasphemy. It’s called ranting. I do it every day, and by some miracle, I haven’t been banned yet.

Sure we bought the picks from the suns for Fernandez, and Sergio, but they were there to be bought, and while buying them, we also cut our cap significantly…

Uh, yeah cutting your cap significantly meant paying Steve Francis more money than Zach Randolph makes this season, and that’s with the reduced buyout Francis got. Riiiiighttttt. Okay, so you bought the Suns picks, but the fact that the Suns were willing to do that was luck. Robert Sarver is a moron. No intelligent owner would allow that to happen. Sarver insisted the Suns save money. That’s how the Suns did so.

shipped out Z bo, cut the length of salaries, and at the end of this season we will have enough cap space to sign a nice free agent and re-sign our core rookies to extended contracts

Umm, you think I don’t remembe the Z-Bo trade? I mean, the first one around, not the one from the other day? I remember some of the casternation on BE from that deal. Some people thought it was wrong; others thought it was a good deal.

As far as having cap space to sign a free agent, okay. That’s your prerogative, but I wouldn’t bother. I think the biggest problem is Portland has too many players, not too little. Time to grow is what they need, not a cannibalistic Free Agent splash designed to get fans interested in a team they’re already salivating over.

The other part of that is having cap space to “extend” rookies. You can do that over the cap anyway. Cap Space has nothing to do with any of that.

it’s true that our owner has shown that he is willing to spend money on a contender team, but we have reduced payroll to become better….if that makes any sense

Actually that doesn’t make sense. Portland didn’t reduce their payroll, from say 2005 on, but that was John Nash who did that reduction, not Pritchard, they reduced it from the level in 2002 which was profoundly retarded then, and time hasn’t helped that analysis. It just took 3 years to keep that team from it’s overspending levels.

You’ve become better with some luck in the draft, some good decisions to sign a guy like Steve Blake, which I think borders a near cannibalism of signing players, and making a difficult financial decision by trading for a Steve Francis type and then waiving him. These are all good things, and I certainly for one am not downgrading any of this, but I believe that LMA, Roy and Oden were gotten through, good decisions, and luck.

No mistakes in the tango, darling. Not like life. It's simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get tangled, you tango on

by pookeyguru on Nov 22, 2008 2:29 PM PST up reply actions

Cutting the cap significantly means

Z-Bo’s contract had 5 years left and 65+million left on it… Steven Francis’ contract had 2 years left and around 30 million. I’ll trust you to figure out the math on that one, both in terms of overall savings in that trade and how that saved Portland cap space over the next 3 years.

Of course, that savings was not free. The downside for Portland was that Francis doesn’t play and Z-Bo is a 20-10 guy. However, I think we have some evidence that shows that Z-Bo can fill up the stat sheet but sucks at helping a team win. Portland dropped Z-Bo, added no real significant players and won 11 more games last season.

Buying the picks from Phoenix wasn’t lucky or expensive… when you consider what teams pay for midlevel free agents these days, $3 million is chump change. Any other team, if they were smart to realize that you could buy the rights to good players (who only make $1 million/year by the way), would have done the same thing. Portland isn’t lucky that their owner will spend, it’s lucky that its GM know how to make good deals. Portland’s former GM signed Z-Bo and Darius Miles to huge contracts and see how that worked out for us. It’s not about the willingness to write a check, it’s about making the right decisions.

I think you have a good point in saying “But why the hell does it matter if you have $25 million in cap space. You have too many young talented players, you don’t need more.” The point is that those young talented players are a few years away from becoming a serious championship contender. They can’t compete with LAL/BOS/PHX and the like this year and probably not next year. That cap space allows Portland to add veteran leaders who can speed up the opening of our championship window.

People following Portland know that Kevin Pritchard’s toughest decision was not in the past, but what he does over the next 10 months to ensure the Blazers can compete for a title next season. He has a lot options: he can use Raef LaFrenze’s expiring contract and package that with cheap young talent to get a veteran via a trade this year, or let it expire and use the cap space we’ve already covered. But the point is that he has an opportunity to make a move that makes Portland a legitimate contender immediately. If he screws up, they’ll still have most of the current core of players and they will be competitive for many years. Faith’s point is that all this wheeling and dealing in the last 2 years has set up that opportunity.

Also, Portland’s payroll hasn’t changed over the last several year too much as we’ve jettisoned all the bad moves of the last GM. However, look at the payroll at the end of this season. Darius Miles’ $9million doesn’t count (if he doesn’t play) and all of a sudden we have about $25million to work with (assuming a projected cap in the $58-60million range next year).

You may want to familiarize yourself with the NBA salary tables at HoopsHype.com.

Getting the number 1 pick was lucky, but the year before we had the worst record and got the number 4 pick. I guess we were unlucky before we were lucky (we’re flip-floppers when it comes to luckiness I guess).

Finally, I don’t care if you think our GM is smart, or if Minnesota and Boston’s GMs are stupid. The end result is the same either way.

thanks :)

yeah! that’s what I ment, take that sac town!!! he he he ;)

really though, it just depends on how you look at it, becuase I’m looking at it from a stand point of where we were and where we are going, …

but if you’re looking at it from an opposition stand point ( as most sac town fans will) I can see how what I say/write/wrote could seem a little ??? false…but I assure you it’s right. from my point of view becuase if we kept zach, and kept on the path that trader bob, and steve paterson (our former gm,and prez) set us on…we would be the knicks (up until a few days ago) of the western confrence…darius is gone..francis comes off the books..haning onto lafrenz to let him fall off the cap…resigning webster…

our g.m. is doing what’s right for our team….he’s doing it right.

I had my disclaimer there man, it was a rant…but thanks for the time you put into the response….

kudos bust a bucket :)

I'm a Portland fan and don't think they will get out of the first round this year

As I acknowledged above, I don’t think our team this year can compete with the upper echelon of teams like the Lakers, Suns and Rockets (when they are healthy, which might be never). We’d also likely lose a series to Utah and the Hornets.

"Spent a bit more"

Look what teams pay for mediocre players these days… $5, $7, $10 million or more per season.

The Blazers paid $3 million for those late first round picks (Rudy, Segio and Nic Batum) and those guys only make a hair over $1 million per season.

That’s not spending more, that saving more.

by Bust a Bucket on Nov 23, 2008 3:27 AM PST up reply actions

You could argue that the Blazers "spend more" on international scouting

and other information services, but I’d expect those cost to pale in comparison to player salaries when teams have to find role players on the free agent market.

by Bust a Bucket on Nov 23, 2008 3:29 AM PST up reply actions

Still requires

an owner willing to fork out the 3 mil to buy the pick. I’m thinking that if Paul Allen was the Phoenix owner they wouldn’t have sold their picks.
