Nothing Left But a Forever in Time
I'm not sure why these Blazers losses have me so verklempt. I mean, Portland is the third or fourth best team in the conference; obviously, I'm not down about the one-point road loss, especially given that John Salmons was an inch away from ending it with a win. As we've been over myriad times, we don't hate the Blazers 'round here ... there's something to be said for the mutual hatred of the Lakers and small town kinship.
There's certainly some mirroring going on between the franchise. Brandon Roy and Kevin Martin are of equal quality, and it's not hard to imagine one of Spencer Hawes or Jason Thompson becoming as good as LaMarcus Aldridge within a couple years. We need the third monster someday to catch up; it could be the other young big, it could be the '09 draft pick, it could the '10 free agent. The future looks as bright for the Kings now as it did for the Blazers in Winter '06. There's no reason to really worry right now.
I think there's a general understanding -- correct me if I'm wrong -- that this is the way it goes with a young rebuilding team. You will lose games to better teams nine times out of 10. It's a fact of life. We accept this, yes? I accept it. I got jittery in the final four minutes of this game not because I'd just die if the Kings blew it. I got jittery because of how excited I'd have been if the Kings actually won. It's almost the opposite of a, say, 2004 game. When you're a good/great team, there is relief with a win and devastation with a loss. With a rebuilding team that harbors hope, there is ecstasy with a win and indifference with a loss. We aren't going to remember the ball bouncing off back iron. We'll remember Spencer Hawes stripping Greg Oden, running the floor and finishing ferociously, drawing primal screams from us and the bench mob alike. Just give us a glimmer, and we'll be patient.
And I think that's the difference between us and Joe Maloof. We can brush off the end of the game because we can smell the bread baking. Maloof's running a business the only way he knows how: success now, success now, success now. In hotels and beer distribution, you don't need to have patience. There are no rules forcing a semblance of parity. If the Maloofs owned a baseball team, it'd be the Yankees or Red Sox or Angels -- the fam would buy a championship. (This is what they tried to do in 2001, 2002, 2003. Those attempts left us looking at the free agent class of '10 rather than '07 or '08.) We know tomorrow will be brighter -- we see it in Shock, we see it in Hawes, we see it in the Jason Levien hiring, we see it in Martin.
Hell, we see it in the Blazers. The difference between bad and good is patience. Most of the Kings -- the players, the coaches, the front office, the fans -- are ready to wait. Maloof's got to learn to do the same. Reggie Theus needs to remain the coach of this team. He got the message, and he's doing his job.

Good loss overall.....
I felt pretty good about the game. The kids got run (except Thompson for whatever reason), we got one step closer to a high pick, Mikki proved himself totally incompetent for the assigned task (catching the ball in the post). I don’t think the Blazers are feeling too good about winning by one at home against our banged-up squad. We’ve been competitive against good teams while going young. That’s very positive for our future. Spencer looks more and more like a difference maker matchup-wise. Now let’s see if our coach can figure out how to draw up a crunch time play that doesn’t involve Salmons iso or bad shooters coming off screens for 18 footers.

As a Blazers fan, trust me – nobody around Portland feels good after this win except for dodging a bullet against an inspired Kings team. Like Coach Nate said, we dodged a bullet.
Keep your heads up Kings fans. Keep supporting Coach Theus. This is his 1st head coaching gig, coaching a banged up team, with a roster he didn’t put together. AmiRight?
Till next time.

I feel good about it
But that’s just because the Kings really seemed to want to win. You may be rebuilding, but there’s no denying the intensity those guys showed last night. Might’ve been revenge. Might not. The fact is that bad team don’t want to win. They don’t care. That’s why I don’t think the Kings are a bad team. They need no wholesale real building. Just a few more quality players or even some oven time.
What is wrong with the Maloofs. Theus is doing an admirable job.

It's nice to see some real Blazer fans stop by.
I think you both make some good outside observer comments which help to validate our own sentiments. Thanks for stopping in and not gloating. That was a good, hard fought game between two young and talented teams. I’m sure we are going to see a lot more battles like this one over the next decade.

Yes
Those comments by Net and bob are excellent additions to a Kings blog.
Not excellent:
“atleast it is closer then the last time”
" You’re welcome. Outlaw didn’t think to much on that play."
“Aldridge and Oden were horrible tonight…We (Blazers) got zilch from everyone outside of Roy… but Roy showed why he’s an allstar…”
“With Portland playing one of there worst games of the season and Sacramento playing one of there better games, Portland is still obviously the better team, and Sacramento is still not good at all.”
Note: the above are actual Blazer fan quotes posted on this site. While they all might be true, coming from a fan of another team, they are just insulting.
The following is just my opinion, and may not reflect the opinion of this site or anyone else for that matter: If you want to post on a Kings blog, you should post about the Kings. If you want to post about the Blazers, put it on the Blazers blog. If you are from another blog and you don’t have anything constructive to say, say nothing.
Rec’s for the three previous posts.

Can't we all just get along?
I like an outside view as long as it written respectfully. Regardless of what the great CoolCat and his “group think” would like to assume, we here at StR don’t share a collective idea on the past, present or future of the kings. Outside observers/posters are welcome in my book.

just overriding the fears of an injured team that was struggling early.
“monsters aren’t real, there are no monsters under my bed….monsters aren’t real, there are no monsters under my bed….monsters aren’t real, there are no monsters under my bed….”
But it should be noted that the Spurs made it through the first part of the injury gauntlet with their heads above water. You should be feeling pretty good about now.
Also, I never would have guessed that the Kings were your “bit on the side”. Good stuff.

I agree
I also like and welcome outside opinions about the Kings. I think my problem is/was the context of the comments coming during a game thread. I’d never watch a Kings playoff game with a fan of the opposing team. It’s too stressful, I’m too invested, it’s not fun. I either feel guilty about getting too excited or I feel pissed because my team isn’t doing as well as I’d like. But watching with Kings fans is great. I really enjoy the game threads here at STR, you get that common goal camaraderie.
I know a lot of it is just me, but if I see:
Kings fan: We can’t stop Roy!
I think/respond: Yeah, he’s killin us. Gotta find a way to stop him!
But if I see:
Blazers fan: You can’t stop Roy!
I think/respond: Fuck off!
If I saw:
Blazers fan: Salmons is having trouble stopping Roy. You guys should try Thompson on Roy, he struggles against taller defenders.
I’d be grateful, informed and enlightened by thoughtful ideas presented by a friend from the north.
(note: I just made the above up and it is in no way based on any belief in Roy’s abilities or JT’s)
It’s funny because I found the 2-3 posters posing as Kings fans trolling last nights game thread much less annoying than the Blazers posters “cheering for their team in my living room”. I know there are complete idiots in this world, I just ignored them. But most of the Blazer fans aren’t idiots, and I still find most of their posts irritating. I found the comments in the game thread much more annoying than the FanPost whose author got banned. I’m pretty sure it has a lot to do with heat of the moment in game stress.
I’m pissed off because we just turned the ball over twice in a row giving up back to back buckets on the other end and then I see “You can’t stop Roy!” and I want to punch somebody. The FanPost read the next day, I think whatever just some idiot.
Hopefully this long winded post will help me to ignore/brush off those comments in the future. If not, I think I should start skipping the game threads.

personally, Im glad the Kings can even stay with a team like the Blazers, in their place. I know this is going to be a long season, but getting to watch guys like JT, Hawes, and Bobby Brown get more PT and get better is worth all the losses.

Patience is a wonderful thing.
It makes it far easier to enjoy your team when you realize that they are learning and growing as players. Losses don’t hurt as bad. Win feel that much better. Tempered expectations help immensely. A good team always takes time to grow together. Look at the Spurs. Look at the Pistons. Look at (ugh) the ever-hated Lakers.
Then Boston throws a wrench into the whole thing by cobbling together a Championship team in one year. I hate them too. :p

To be fair...
Boston just used a different strategy to get over the hump. They were stockpiling draft picks there for a couple of years, and realized that they could use large expiring contracts along with those draft picks to bring in disgruntled stars from teams on the decline/rebuild. It worked so well that it has become a natural part of team-building at this point (for a few examples see: Gasol, Pau; Kidd, Jason; O’Neal, Shaquille).

I trust GP
My feeling is that if there isn’t a trade that will improve the franchise that he’s the type of GM who is smart enough not to make a deal just for the sake of making a deal (the Kidd & Shaq deals felt too reactive, while the KG/RA/PG deals seemed more proactive).
GP brought in Webber, Bibby, & Miller using spare parts (i.e. not part of the future core), so he just needs to work his magic again.
by smgmatt on Nov 25, 2008 11:09 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
He traded core players to get those talents
Or he traded valuable parts of the team to get those guys. Sorry smg, but I disagree with the “spare parts” comments. Jason Williams wasn’t a spare part, Mitch Richmond definitely wasn’t a spare part, and Hedo saw his value change with the Kings in his 3 years. All 3 brought valuable things to the team at various points.

Agree to Disagree?
I never said the players sent out weren’t valuable, and I tried to emphasize that they were not part of the future core of the team.
- Mitch wasn’t part of the “future” core. He was the best player on the team, but he wasn’t part of the future.
- Williams was the starting PG, but Bibby was a significant improvement that would elevate the franchise going forward.
- Hedo was a great player off the bench (one of my personal favorites, actually), but he was not a starter; Miller was brought in as the future replacement for Vlade.
I didn’t mean any disrespect to the players we sent out, just saying that at no point did GP give up more than he got back, and I’d go so far as to say “significantly so” overall.
by smgmatt on Nov 25, 2008 12:41 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Not part of the future core & spare parts are totally different statements
So we can agree to disagree on that. I agree with the first statement, but not the 2nd.

Up here in Portland, we love you guys too. I am a long-time Blazers fan, but the Kings have also always had a special place in my heart and I am glad you guys share the same hatred towards LA. K*obe will be close to retiring, the L*kers join the lottery, God be praised. This is when I hope it’s a Kings Blazers rivalry. A rivalry where I respect the opponent’s fans and don’t hate everything they stand for would be very fun.
We’d be the only ones paying attention to our small markets, but it could be an inside thing.
The Kings aren’t bad, I don’t think. They’re better than they’ve been showing. You have Martin last night, that’s your game. Not sure about Moore, though.

I'm a little tired of Moral victories
A few ACTUAL ones would perk me up.

3 games?
If 9 points at New Orleans (without Martin!) wasn’t good enough to keep you going for the last 3 games, I don’t know what else to tell you.

Yes
I do need a win every three games or so to keep my spirits up.
Now would be good.

I'm with you LTTG.
16 games in and the Kings have had a 4 game and 2- 3 game losing streaks, 4 losses in the final possession and injuries up the ass. Can we catch a break?

Maybe we should start storing the wins on the old TiVo box.

Actually
I was doing that for a while (sigh), but four (or is it 5?) losses in the last 30 seconds of games are a little wearying.

What's worse...
…to lose in the last 30 seconds, or get blown out early?
Going into this season, one of the biggest concerns was Theus playing the vets over the youth in an attempt to squeeze out as many wins from this roster as possible. The fact that we’re watching a significant number of minutes going to the youth and they’re still this competitive is very exciting.
It’s all in how you look at it, but there’s no arguing that getting those W’s is the overall goal.

Another Blazer fan here
who LOVES the Kings. I hope they stick with Theus because he is going to be a really, really good coach before it is all said and done.
And from the game last night…every time Miller or Hawes drifted out towards the three line and our efenders (not a typo…I don’t give them a D if they forget to play it) sagged off, our whole section was screaming in pain. Well, except the Sac-Town fans in the row behind me. This just in; teams should fear the shooting of those guys. Doubling off them does not qualify for our “Good Idea of the Week” segment. When Martin and Garcia get back, I expect to see a few of those Moral Victories be accompanied by Ws in the win column.
Wishing you guys much luck, at least against every team NOT named the Blazers :-)

Great essay TZ
I buzzed it up (not really sure what that does) too because it sums up just about every feeling I got. The only difference is how I feel about the Lakers, but that’s because, well, I just don’t hate them for some reason. Or I just don’t hold them at the same stakes that others do. Oh well.

Damn you TZ
I was ready for some good ol’ fashioned self-loathing, and some Salmons-bashing for good measure. But you bring a great point to light. This is a rebuilding, and it takes time. I guess I’m just tired of envying the Blazers. I’m tired of “next year will be our year.” I’m tired of waiting to see any sort of positive Kings highlight on ESPN. I’m just tired…

TZ - one of the things I like about your writing is about 90% of
the time you say just what I’m thinking except you’re literate and you know what you’re talking about. Because of the troll/s here last night I decided to watch the game throuigh the eyes of Blazers Edge. It was classic, they were in full melt down mode. Yes there were some comments like those Kfan highlighted but mostly they spent the night but mostly they spent the night tearing apart their team.
We seem to have more confidence in our Kings than they do in the Blazers, very insecure fans.
After we got past the first quarter and the beginning of the 2nd I loved what I was seeing.
We were very lucky we weren’t down 20 at the 15 minute mark.
Last night’s game stood in stark contrast to the loss in Memphis and was representative of the team I’ve been expecting to see this season. The thing about last nights loss is if we can stay close in the game ultimately we are going to win more then 1/10. Kevin and ciscos’s absences do make a difference and when they are back we will win some of the close one’s we are losing know.
As an aside, while I can’t wait for Cisco to return, I also remember how frustrating and inconsistent his game can be at times. In his absense he is stating to take on some heroic proportions. At times we will be cursing him when he gets back on the floor.
Don’t fire Reggie now, it really is that simple.
Lastly, TZ, could you or one of the assistant editors be here at gametime to block the troll/s who hijacked this sight for a time last night. Props to Kfan who never gave up.

Without these comments
I wouldn’t have known of Kfan’s exploits, since I didn’t read the game thread.
Thanks for holding down the fort Kfan!

But Stinky wasn’t helping matters. and wanting to strangle Mike Rice while watching didn’t help either.

nice to read a blog with some realism
I go to so many blogs after my beloved blazers play. I have noticed that many of these sites are way out of touch with reality. I read the Chicago blog after our 42 point blowout and their blogger had the audacity to say it didn’t count because of coaching decisions. This is coming from their blogger not a poster. It is nice to see a community that understands their team and process. I agree with TZ that this is a team on the rise. You just need a little luck to go with that patience and you will be a top team in the west once again. I do agree that our paths are paralled in many ways. I think even currently you have some pieces we envy, Udrih and last night Hawes :) I don’t however think that Kevin Martin is on the same level with Brandon Roy. Kevin Martin is a better shooter overall, but I think that Brandon is a more complete player because of his size and defensive abilities. It allows him to finish in the lane more often. I could be wrong on this because every year Kevin surprises me with his playmaking, but I think at this point even most of you would agree right?
by The Natural ala Mode on Nov 26, 2008 6:27 AM PST reply actions 0 recs
I disagree a bit about Kevin and Brandon
What sets Brandon apart is his size and ball handling. Kevin is a better overall offensive player, but Roy is more complete at this point. The only question about both is health, and at some point, that will be held up. I think Roy is a terrific talent, I don’t think anybody disagree’s with that, but to the point that he is that much better than Kevin I disagree. He’s a lil bit better, but not that much. He’s just not on the national radar for whatever reason. Roy is.
That all being said, I’ve seen many of Matt’s posts over time. His point of view is about the Bulls, and not necessarily the Blazers. You may not agree with him, but the 42 point loss says just as much about how bad the Bulls were as the Blazers were in that particular game. No team is 42 points better than any other in the NBA.

You lost me
at “Brandon Roy and Kevin Martin are of equal quality.”
I’d take Roy for Martin in a heartbeat, because he knows how to take over a game at crunch time and can play two positions, including the one with the ball in his hands half the time. He is the heart of the Blazers and the main reason why you have them ranked so highly.
