Just for Kicks and Giggles...
...say we continue down the path we're on, and we end up in the lottery. And, because I'm feeling really hypothetical, say we happen to luck out, and once again have the number 1 pick in a draft with no real number 1 player.
We would have a few options, but the concensus seems to be Ricky Rubio or Blake Griffin with the number one pick. A lot can happen in a year, but that's how things are shaping up without seeing any college ball this year. We need both a true low post offensive player and a point guard; however, neither of these players seem to be a lock to be a star player, which is really what you're hoping for with a number 1 pick.
What would you do if you were Petrie?
Draft Rubio, Griffin or try to trade out of the top position (say Rubio for Rudy Fernandez and Jerryd Bayless). And what, realistically, do you think the top pick could fetch in a trade?

When was the last time
that someone traded the #1 pick? Was it Webber in ’93?

Webber was drafted by Orlando...
and traded on draft day to the Warriors for the 3rd pick Anfernee Hardaway and 3 #1 picks.

You get a stud in his prime

Trading the #1...
I realize teams don’t often trade the #1 pick, but I would be willing to bet Washington wishes it traded the #1 rather than drafting Kwame Brown, or Toronto wishes it traded the #1 rather than picking Bargani. An argument could be made that Milwaukee would have been better served auctioning off the #1 rather than taking Andrew Bogut. The Clips would love to have a do-over with their #1 Michael Olowakandi.
I realize it doesn’t happen often, but when you go back and look at the #1 picks. Half become stars and half do little to improve the squad that picks them. If you can get someone who believes that Ricky Rubio is the next big star, we might be able to leverage that pick into a considerable cache of playersand/or picks. (Of course, if we do trade him, he is a mortal lock to become the next big star).

The #1 pick
What you’re not taking into consideration is that the pick would be in GP’s hands (unlike Ellison). And once the man determines who he wants, he’s not going to screw around a lot with draft position, unless it is cast in stone that he will get the player that he ultimately covets.

2009 Draft
I was just thinking about next year’s draft for kicks and giggles and was thinking more along the lines of not getting the #1 pick, which is more probable. I guess if the King’s got the #1, they should be interested in Rubio. Fom the footage I’ve seen he’s an offensive/assist machine, but how’s his perimeter defense.
I was thinking more about defense. Can the King’s get both Hasheem “the dream” Thabeet (a 7’ +, shot blocking force) and maybe Jrue “happy” Holiday (a 6’4, ambidextrous, defensive combo guard who can also score)? With two lower picks in the top 10/15/20, these two would shore up alot of weaknesses in the future.
Then just throw in Chris Bosh or Dwyane Wade in 2010 and I’m happy! Easy right?

Those two are both currently
in the correct projected ranges that the Kings may pick at.
Good thought.

Finally...
someone else with the Jrue suggestion!
For the record though, I think it would be more realistic to classify him as an excellent offensive combo guard who also happens to play defense. Throw in the fact that he’s projected to play at PG (and probably would be playing that position already if UCLA didn’t have one of the top PGs in the nation returning in Darren Collison), and it just seems like a nice fit for the Kings.
As far as number one overall goes? I’d lean toward trading it at the moment because I don’t see a sure-fire superstar out there. Rubio is going to be one of the riskiest picks in a long time, should he be available and projected near the top come draft day.

let's all agree - any draft pick is a gamble
Yes – even LeBron. Jordan was #3. Hindsight drafting is easy, everyone is an expert on that.
