Around SBN: VIDEO: Watch I'll Have Another Win the Preakness Stakes

Road Trip Summary

So I've watched way too much of these first four games, and need to vent a little, here are my impressions:

Beno

Its been really painful.  His ball handling has been terrible, and he really looks completely overmatched by the likes of Jameer Nelson & Mario Chalmers.  I never was a huge fan (I know that's easy to say at this moment), but he was so much more confident last year.  He looks overwhelmed by the speed and intensity of the game this year.  My hope is, he's still not 100%, and we'll see better.  Honestly, its difficult to imagine how we could see worse.

Speed Racer

He certainly struggled, but his struggles are more understandable.  Unlike Beno, I have no long term worries; Speed's figuring it out.  Not a great start, but its one week in a long season, and there's be definite progress.

John Salmons

I know he's easy to pick on around here, but I don't have as many problems with his style as others.  Yes, he pounds the rock too much at times, no question about it, but he hasn't been too bad about that this year.  He's a slasher, he needs to dribble some, and honestly this team needs someone to do it.  We're short of players that can create shots, Salmons can do it, but he needs to probe the defense to do so.  My biggest disappointment so far has been his lack of intensity and leadership.  We've seen a little of it, and it has to be tough when the team has been this terrible, but JS has to be one of the leaders, both offense and defense, and I haven't seen it.  He needs to see this is it, its his shot to be a starter and he needs to do more.  Either that or he's just not good enough and should be a back-up whether he likes it or not, which is a distinct possibility.  I think he's probably the 5th best starter on a really good team, and I am not sure he'll get the chance to be that here, we need more.

Mikki Moore

He's a backup player forced into starting due to circumstances that aren't his fault.  Don't hate the payer, hate the circumstance.  He won't be in our lives much longer, give the guy a break, he plays hard, and is just a limited player.

Spencer Hawes

Wow, one of the two positive revelations of the season so far.  There's three things that really stand out for me:

He's so much more comfortable this year.  Fewer dumb fouls, better rebounding, it seems he's caught up to the speed and intensity of the NBA.

Spencer is scoring around the rim much more effectively.  The complaints I had last year, about him not doing the basics big guys are supposed to be able to do he has fixed so far this year.  He's scoring with either hand near the basket and doing a great job.  He obviously has difficulty with really athletic big men (Greg Oden and Dwight Howard), but I can't hold that against him.  Experience will help some there, and honestly, there's only so many of those guys.

Spencer's decision making has also been light years better.  He still makes some dumb plays, but he really seems to be starting to get it.  He's been our best or second best player on the floor most of the time so far, tremendous progress.

JT

Once again, what more do you want from the guy, he's been tremendous.  For everyone that wants him to start...patience please.  Let him come off the bench and destroy backups for 20 minutes a night.  That's working, in not too long he'll get 25-30 minutes and some of those will come for decent stretches against Carlos Boozer, Elton Brand, etc.  If he's still playing well, then move him into the starting lineup.  He's been ridiculously successful so far, let him grow, but let him do it at a reasonable pace.  He'll get his chances, but we want him to have the best chance of success.  That means building confidence, give him and the coaches some time.

good assessment

i like your analysis of our hawes and JT. i have no clue what is wrong with udrih…he seems kinda lost.

martin’s struggles have been most surprising. i’d expect a scorer of marin’s caliber to be able to put up points fairly easily and consistently, especially on this team, which lacks many other true scoring talents.

martin’s difficulties through the opening games makes me suspect whether everyone is trying to get used to whatever system theus is trying to enforce this year. attempting to push a new system would somewhat explain the troubles of our PG and our leading scorer…but if its not an issue of the system, then man, i have no idea what’s going on…

Excellent post For Three

I’m definitely rec’d this.

Nobody knows what’s wrong with Udrih, except Beno. I think Brad Miller’s absence is hurting Beno more than anybody because the flow that Beno needs to be effective isn’t there without Brad around. That’s something that JT and Shawes, or someone else in lieu of Miller, will need to be able to create for the KIngs to run any kind of offense effectively.

i agree

miller’s absence seems to be hurting beno’s flow…it may in fact be hurting the entire team’s flow. kinda makes you realize what a crucial cog miller is in the kings’ offensive machine.

if this is true, i am also now frightened that our starting PG would need someone else to establish the flow for him :-|

Well Beno isn't perfect

But I still think all things considered, there is more than just Miller’s absence going on with Beno.

Coach Theus

While JT`s play on O & energy & rebounding has been great,COACH is setting him up to fail & the rest of team playing JT at the SF!10/13 on 3pt shots by D.Marshall & K.Rush.I understand we`re shorthanded, but how many 3`s on JT does it take to understand that doesn`t work!I would rather lose by 20 with Moore on the bench,w/ JT getting his mins. & Donte playing the backup SF.Whynot they had the same stats last game 0pts. & 0rebs,only diff., MINUTES & DNP-CD!JT is a 6 11 POWER FORWARD if you want to play a 6 11 SF, PLAY DONTE!

Watched the whole game

Could be mistaken, but I saw JT running out w/ a hand up late almost every three, maybe caught in a switch or just helping out Sheldon either way my opinion stands PF not SF.Thats on Theus!

last night it didn't matter

my point was that JT was not guarding Marshall who was wide open, I guess the scouting report didn’t list that he is a good 3pt shooter. But I totally agree that JT can’t guard 3’s and is better suited to the 4 or 5

Still too early to worry

Yes, the team has played lousy so far, and yes there is cause for concern here. But I think it’s really hard to analyze the team because:

1) No Brad Miller. Brad’s impact on this offense has been talked to death the last few seasons, but it boils down to this: The team is significantly better when Brad Miller is on the floor, regardless of his numbers. Brad’s passing and screen-setting are hugely important to an effective King’s offense (especially for one Kevin Martin).

2) No Ron Artest. Yes, I know Ron won’t be coming back, but this team does have to figure out how to win ballgames without having a Ron-Ron to throw the team on his back.

3) Long road trip to start the season. ’Nuff said.

4) No Francisco. Let’s face it, with Ron-Ron gone, this guy is really the fire in the belly of the team.

So…you’ve got a very young team, without three important pieces, on an east coast road trip to start the season. Honestly, the results don’t really surprise me all that much.

Let’s see how this team does after getting a little home cookin’, and some more time together in the Kings practice facility. We’ve seen some good things so far, from Spencer and JT – and you combine those with the sheer talent of Kevin, the return of Brad and Francisco down the road, I think you’ve got an entirely different team than you’ve seen on the floor so far.

Roland Ratings back this up too

For those who aren’t aware of what they are, I will make a link. (I already know Otis has at least an idea, if not already knowing, what they are.) Basically Roland Ratings are an advanced plus minus system that take into account various factors, but mainly as far as I can tell, how much your team scores on the court with you and how much is scored against you while on the court. There are other things, but the’s basic jist of the plus minus system.

Now, the Roland Rating’s are better than that because what they do is break it down into smaller percentages and so on. Last year Brad Miller’s roland rating led the Kings for most of the season until he went down. Then Artest ended up taking the crown by a very slim margin. (Too slim for a player of Artest’s caliber. Likewise this season I would expect Artest’s Roland Rating to be far better this season while on Houston. These things are relative.)

Otis I'm shocked at how positive you are

But I’m getting good vibes. Listening to a wise sage is always a wise idea.

Well...to be honest

I only caught a few minutes of the Miami and Philly games, so that could be swaying my thinking. But I really feel that this initial roadtrip was a perfect recipe for a lousy start. I figured they would be 0-4, with the outside chance of a win in Minny.

And thanks for pointing out the Roland Ratings. Brad has always been a bit of an optical illusion. He’s the epitome of the type of player whose numbers don’t accurately reflect their contribution.

You were better off for it

I caught the Philly game cuz I don’t get a TV in my cardboard box (isn’t any way to get cable here), and I haven’t figured out exactly yet whether I want to splurge for broadband connection when they can black out every other game at their discretion.

As far as Roland Ratings go, they are the single biggest indicator, in my opinion, of where Brad Miller is so valuable. When I looked Brad’s up to make a point about how he was playing, Chauncey Billups was leading the league in that category. It shocked the living shit outta me, but then again, I wasn’t that surprised.

You were right that this team was destined to a lousy start with B-52’s suspension, and just as important, Garcia’s injury. I’ve been writing about this alot in my fan post’s that fans need to get drunk, or just get off the neurotic view of everything. Not every loss is a criticism of this franchise’s direction.

After watching the game live last night

I need a whole roll of rolaids or maybe the Sam’s club size bottle.

OOPS my bad Roland rating not Rolaids

Truthfully

IF you ask Otis, Kusian, and Section (I choose all 3 cuz I know they’ve followed the team since it moved to Sac in 85), which the worst Kings team was, I’m sure they could easily pick 3 different teams and easily win the argument with however they chose to support the argument. Or, maybe not.

I am not saying this is the worst team ever

just that it is not good and poorly coached, I do feel there is lots of young talent on the roster and hope things improve with Miller and Garcia back and a few home games

by Beagle12 on Nov 4, 2008 3:05 PM PST up reply actions

I don't know about poorly coached

But that might be the case too. I think it’s too early to dump any of this on Reggie or the players. Bad stretches do happen, it’s just unfortunate that this bad stretch opened up the season. (Beagle, this also happened last year too with Artest gone for 7 games, so I can’t tell you that I’m surprised by it in any way.)

stagnet offense and no defense = poor coaching

if they were missing shots and getting beat while in good defensive sets I may agree with you. I hope the return of Miller and Garcia will help. I was very dissapointed with how the team operated mor then the result monday.

Seeing it live doesn't help either

Watch this team over the course of the year Beagle. You might realize that coming to Philly, outside of JT’s and Johnny’s return, is not something the whole team looks forward. Their home is on the other coast, and starting off the season on the road for the 5th straight year (what a retarded decision to let Disney on Ice come in for that length of time to keep the Kings outta Arco, but whatever) really hurt a rebuilding young patched together team. It was the single worst way to start the year. Honestly though beagle, keep this in mind. Every team has to go on the raod when they’re hurt, or whatever, and the road is very brutal in the NBA. Very very very very brutal. The Kings will be alot closer to the way they played the Grizzlies by the end of the year than the team that looked like they were on Mars over the previous 3 games.
