"I loved the way we played. We passed the ball, we defended. The youngsters played a lot. That might have been the most important regular-season win since we bought the team, given the circumstances. I am really happy for Reggie. Maybe we can get on a roll. We're not out of it yet."

Joe Maloof, who suffered a mild stroke last week. As quoted by Ailene Voisin. Get well, Joe.

The most important win in the regular season?

I mean, I realize this is a big deal, and it was satisfying on many levels. But the most important win? Gimme a break. People are just hyped cuz it was the Lakers. Which I understand, but don’t agree with.

I hate to admit feeling like a party pooper

but I was kinda tracking with Pookey this morning. Honestly, I was thinking to myself: Self, I’d be happier if they won the damn games they should win rather beating two of the league’s best teams a month apart. I guess mine is an argument for consistency – even if it means mediocrity, (which it surely does for this year and maybe even next.)

I realize, of course, that I suck for thinking this and am willing to take a verbal beating for being negative ;-)

But, don’t get me wrong: I love watching Kobe brick shot after shot as much as the next Kings’ fan!

by Kusian on Dec 10, 2008 3:00 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah Kusian thanks for seeing my end

The reason to be happy is not cuz of the Lakers. It’s how the players played, the rotations Reggie used, and the fact that both sides worked with each other last night. That’s how you win games people.

Problem is...

this rotation worked without Kevin Martin and his 35+ minutes. I’m hoping Martin can integrate and become a solution, not a problem. Theus needs define/refine his rotation to make this thing work on a consistent basis. Good win, fun to watch, losing by 8 or less on Friday would make me feel good going forward.

I'm totally with you on this one

It was a great win, and a necessary win for Reggie’s future, but it was just a regular season win.

It’s not like we won a title or knocked off the Fakers to grab the 8th seed on the final day of the season. Come on. Be happy, but this is getting a little ridiculous.

Lithium Lithium

It’s like the playoff team that over celebrates getting out of the 1st round compared to the team that is focused on the title and will hold their celebrations until that time.

Great win, let’s learn from it. We can play with anybody if we bring that kind of effort on a consistent basis. “Pat-pat-pat on the back” Now let’s focus on the next game.

As opposed to go party all night and blow off practice tomorrow because we’re hung over and cruise thru practice the next day because we’re “all that” and then get blown out on Friday.

To me, the reaction of some to this win is just a bit over the top. I’m happy the team came out with some effort. I’m upset that they don’t play a much higher percentage of their games with a similar effort level. Until I see that kind of effort on a consistent basis, I’ll temper my enthusiasm.

You want to start tipping over cars, go for it, but I expect more from the team. This is the kind of game I would have been ecstatic about in 1996, when we’d never had a good team and there was little prospect of us ever having a good team. If anything this win actually pisses me off a little bit, because the team should be playing hard every night.

K: I have said the same thing in the main post-game thread

I just stated it in the affimative, they NEED to play like this every night (or most) to win fans like my wife back, I DON’T want to see the pattern of falling back to sleep after a good game. The players obviously executed a good game plan last night, which reassures me that Reggie has a strategy but makes me worry whether we have enough guys (like Cisco) who REFUSE to lose.

I think if the Kings hang tight with the Lakers or (gasp!) win outright, Theus has the job for the rest of the season. If it’s an early blowout, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Whisenant or one of the assistants take over Wednesday.

Well you can't just win this one

And think you’ve got the title wrapped up. If we promptly drop 2 to the T-Wolves and the Knicks, the Laker game is basically irrelevant.

I don’t buy the one win spells job security for the rest of the season crap. The season’s not about one game but about the entire 82.

I think management would have let him take the second Lakers loss...

purely semantics, but I think Reggie would have gotten one more game- not to show he could win but so the new, “company man” coach wouldn’t have to take on the Lakers in game one.

Another point I just found out from her "article"

Was this statement:

While it isn’t time to pop the champagne corks – another prolonged slump and Theus could still be gone by New Year’s – the victory certainly cools the heating pad under his seat. It also gives the second-year coach what he wants for the holidays – specifically, more time to transform a lethargic, disorganized bunch of princes into an aggressive, active squad that progresses by the week.

This was followed by her blog entry that she made later, that I forgot to blockquote in the comment up above:

Just a hunch here, but the rematch between the Kings and Lakers on Friday at Staples Center might reveal a lot about the Kings, for this reason: the Lakers won’t take Tuesday’s season-worst defeat lightly. They will go at the Kings hard. If the Kings respond well and make a game of it, that would suggest Tuesday’s impressive showing was more than an aberration

. If I posted this somewhere else, I do apologize. Just seemed to enhance the article point just that much more, with this blog comment she made later.

by KingsFan on Dec 10, 2008 7:43 PM PST reply actions

Connected

Ailene indicates the stroke might be connected to the double knee surgery — Joe has had more stress because of the lack of mobility and the pain, and he hasn’t been able to work out. The stress, so it goes, led to the mild stroke.

Scary stuff. And we really do wish him well, no matter what we think about his positions w/r/t the coach.

Pretty surprised he wasn’t on blood thinners following a restrictive surgery like this. Knee replacement like this is horribly intrusive. Doctors cut off the leg above and below the knee, jam spikes into the bone attached to the new replacement section and then put everything back in place.

People live their entire lives on thinners.

As long as they are careful it isn’t so bad. When we had our first son, my wife spent 25 days in the hospital with pre-term labor. She had to have heparin shots in her big ol’ pregnant belly twice a day which was miserable. She has a clotting gene disorder which will eventually require daily thinners for life.

I loved the win against the Lakers not because in and of itself it means more than a win

against OKC or anybody else in this season’s record. A win is just a win, it’s one game out of 82. But whether we are in the celler or the playoffs a win against the Lakers is always particularly sweet, and sweeter yet because of the miserable game against Denver.

The level of ball the Kings played last night was both encouraging and discouraging, encouraging because it shows what the team can do, what they are capable of with focus, hustle and smart rotations. It’s discouraging because the Kings so rarely show this form and skill level. I think I have been more surprised by the mediocre level of play we have seen too often this season. I don’t get how this team can fluctuate so much.

I’m expecting a beatdown on Friday and a loss will be ok if this team plays with the same fire and defensive consistency it showed last night. On the other hand, if they revert to the form and level we have seen far to often this season then my enthusiasm for the win last night is going to start to turn towards disgust.

So for what it’s worth I’m still savoring last night’s win and am looking forward to the game in LA on Friday, not because I’m expecting a repeat of last nights game but I’m eager to see which team shows up and until the evidence proves otherwise I’m expecting to see a Kings team that learned something about itself last night.
