Game #23: Kings at Lakers THE SEQUEL
Sacramento Kings at Los Angeles Lakers, Dec 12, 2008 7:30 PM PST
If you haven't read Amick's account of the team meeting on Sunday, do so. From what Amick gathers, there was some honesty and blame and admissions and uneasiness.
Normally, I'd brush this off. (I think Amick would too.) I mean, the team had a meeting after Musselman's DUI, if I recall. And a few last year. Teams meet. But it makes headlines ... especially if the team is suffering/struggling. And nine times out of 10 (NOT SCIENTIFIC), the resolution disappears immediately.
But the meeting was Sunday. The Lakers game was Tuesday. It was easily the most inspired the team had played all season, maybe in Theus' entire tenure. The effort was simply off the charts. The execution was great too, but the effort really sparked the win.
But did the execution spark the effort? You lead after one quarter, the gym is rockin' ... maybe that sustains you. The shots were falling, man. The Lakers made mistakes (lots of them). It didn't have to be Sparta, you know? This is the NBA, and the Lakers only had one extra former All-Star on the roster. (WHAT UP BIG BRAD? MUCH LOVE)
So that's the question heading into tonight. A win or loss, or even the margin won't tell us. We have to see to believe. They say effort is 75% of defense. Will the team fly around and leave every ounce of life on the hardwood? Or will they slip back into self-pity and "when do I get my shots?" mode?
? ?? ???
DO U BYLIEVE?
Tip's at 7:30. Go Kings.

First quarter is gonna be key
If we are still in the game and playing good, the players are going to believe they can truly hang with this Lakers team and dare I say, anything can happen.
I’m having a bunch of lakers fans over tonight that I hope to talk much shit to. Go Kings!!

I'm really interested
in seeing how the Lakers play tonight. Not to make too much of one game in a eighty two game season, but if the Lakers don’t dominate the Kings then I’ll be ready to write them off having any chance at beating a heathly Boston or Cleveland team in the Finals.

as soon as he gets a career high 4 assists in a game. 32 points again wouldn’t be bad either.

I'll believe in Douby
When his “adjusting his shot” doesn’t mean drawing front iron on the first shot, then air-balling OVER the hoop on the next.
Or going 0-9 while adjusting. Though I’m sure that 10th shot would have been a thing of beauty.

Question
If a player passes inside for a lay up attempt to another player and gets fouled, then the fouled player converts the free throws, does the passing player get an assist? Wrong place to ask the question but I am sure I can get the answer here.

Bynum shuffled his feet again before that move. For having Kareem on their bench, I’d expect Bynum to be further along, Shock and Hawes are way ahead of Bynum on fundamentals.

I think Amick's assessment was right
I don’t put much emphasis on team meetings, they happen all the time, they get publicized, nothing comes of them.
However, The kings are playing with an energy tonight I haven’t seen or read about yet this season. (The same energy that has been referred to in the previous game)

I love Hawes but Thompson needs to start at the 4. It took 9 minutes of the first quarter to get Hawes into the offense. He needs to be the main offensive cog of the second unit while JT bangs with the starters.

Agreed
But that is still a flawed team. They have some work to do if they want to win the whole thing this year.

We played well
we spent a fair bit of energy coming back the 3rd quarter lapse.
..Then lose it with a diffferent lineup that got us back in!
no Cisco or JT in last minutes.

Not sure
About having Mikki in there down the stretch instead of Thompson. Mikki always plays hard, but Thompson is the future.

In a way Otis
I see Reggie’s point. It’s hard to make a rookie earn something if he’s just given it cuz he’s the “future”.

Sure
But Shock clearly outperformed Mikki tonight. I thought he earned the PT down the stretch.

I agree with you Otis
I was just playing devil’s advocate, to point out, that overall, if you’re Reggie, and want to build a winning culture, as a coach, part of that is keeping the hunger in young players I suppose. It’s a bit of a cerebral point I admit, but I think it’s totally fair game now.
After all, as you say, Shock outplayed MIkki, and this wasn’t even close.

Fair points
Plus, I think Reggie likes to throw Mikki a bone from time to time. The guy is a pretty solid teammate, and his energy level is always a plus on the court, even if his talent level doesn’t match it.
Honestly, I’ve been very impressed with Reggie of late. He seems to be hitting the right chords for the most part.

When you've got a 25 maybe 35 win team in talent
It’s hard to look good. You get hit with injuries, no practice team, a key emotional loss in Garcia, your best player out for a stretch in Martin, your original offense revolver got suspended in Miller, there was a recipe for a very bad start.
People needed to back off some of all that, even with the disappointment. And my bandwagoning for Reggie is now complete.

See, I disagree a bit
All your points are valid, but even at that I thought this team played lackadaisical far too often. The nature of some of the home losses was inexcusable, especially when a few of the wins (New Orleans to name one) indicated that the team shouldn’t have been quite as miserable as it was.
But, the last few games have been a marked improvement in the overall feel for the product on the court – even without Kevin Martin.

I think that was a bi-product of the non-practice time somewhat
I still think this team is going to have problems finishing games down the stretch as long as this group is composed the way it is. It’s just not a team that is good enough, or mentally tough enough yet, to do that. I wish it was, but if they were, they would win more than 35 games.

Yeah I agree
Even more so when you realize how great of a fit Donte is with the other players on this team. He doesn’t eliminate anything off what Shock & Hawes does, doesn’t take away shots from Martin, and his athleticism & rebounding are just terrific. If his defense & 3 balls ever come around, oh boy. The kid is only 19, jeesh!

Btw
Donte Greene is the exact reason why I purport SF’s to be of less value higher in the draft. It’s much easier to draft a stud @ the SF with the 28th pick, than it is at any other position in the draft.

Add to his skills
He seems like a smart kid, a good guy and a good teammate. I don’t see him getting awed by the NBA lifestyle the way so many other youngsters do.

Interesting
This loss has me pretty psyched up. That team seems more “together” in general. The team meeting last weekend seems to have been productive.
Also, this game is proof that the NBA still has a terrible problem with their officials. There were at least a half dozen blatantly blown calls in the first half alone. This group was horrible from start to finish.
And I know we’ve chatted about this before, but the NBA needs to go back and re-enact or start enforcing the “no-whining” rule again. The league is starting to become annoyingly unwatchable again.

and kobe never shut up even after he got the t.
I wouldn’t say I’m psyched up after this game but I am encouraged that maybe we are headed in the right direction

One of the worst officiated games since
Game 6. Bynum, two feet out of bounds. JT fouling Gasol’s elbow with his face. All leather, foul calls. Phantom foul calls when a king wasn’t even NEAR a Laker. Yards away, not feet. Jesus Harold Christ. Called correctly, this game at least goes into overtime. At least. I’ll reiterate. I think the investigation into Donaghy and game 6 has given ref’s carte’ Blanche’, not fear or adjustment.

DO U BYLIEVE?
In what? Conspiracy theories? If you subscribe to that notion, you might as well pay no attention to the sport whatsoever. I know that if I felt a sport was fixed, I woudn’t waste my time with any of it. Do refs ever make mistakes? Of course. Having followed the NBA for over 40 years, I know that all things even themselves out in the long run. I have little patience when people resort to crying foul about officiating after their team loses. You win some and lose some, Period. What matters is that you win more games than the other guy does. The team that outlasts everybody else is crowned the champ at the end and deserves the title. End of story. Whining doesn’t change anything.
Play the games and live with the results.

Wasted effort
While I appreciate your intelligent discourse, I fear it is for naught.
If you look across the whole thread, this particular guy was whining about refs from the start, and continued all game. He firmly believes the refs prefer the Lakers (although I doubt he complained on Tuesday).

I didn't see the game
But my impression is that the Kings disappeared in stretches. They are a team that has a chance to win every game if they play hard for 48 minutes, but they don’t have the luxury of being a team that can coast and still pull out a win. And they have to improve the way they close out games.
I like the fact that they were in the ballgame with three minutes left against a top team on the road. Can you spell “moral victory?”
by coolcatreportdotcom on Dec 13, 2008 7:33 AM PST reply actions 0 recs
I'm not sure Disappeared is the right word
This team doesn’t have the extra gear to stay with the 17-3 Lakers, in their building, when they are pissed off and they are playing well. I don’t think there’s a lot of shame in that. When we play hard and well and the really good teams are off we have a chance, but the Lakers played pretty decent for some stretches.
It was a good game for us, we’re going to have to be happy with some moral victories this year, I’m ok with this one.
