Reggie Theus Fired
Adrian Wojnarowski reports the Kings canned Reggie Theus this morning. (Thanks to Skeets for the heads up.)
Kenny Natt takes over.
*******
UPDATE: Sam Amick confirms and reports Chuck Person is gone, too.
*******
UPDATE #2: Woj mentioned that the Kings may chase Eddie Jordan this summer. Late Saturday, Marc Stein of ESPN.com broke the news that Philadelphia might be looking to grab Jordan soon. At FanHouse Sunday, I offered the following guess:
Eddie Jordan, believed to be a top preference of Kings GM Geoff Petrie, is getting interest from Philadelphia. Petrie isn't one to rush into action, but after losing Stan Van Gundy two years ago I wouldn't be surprised if he went rash all of a sudden.
Petrie's a cucumber -- if Mikki Moore puts perishables in his pockets, Petrie has a meat freezer in his socks -- but never underestimate the power of fear.
*******
UPDATE #3: Today was Jason Levien's first day. Assuming he started at 9 and it took, oh, 15 minutes for Woj/Amick to get the news, that means Theus lasted only 45 minutes into Levien's Sacramento career.
Remember this? Or this? Or this?

P.S.
What’s the rationale on waiting out an Eddie Jordan hire? Can I assume that Jordan is unlikely to sign on as an interim guy, and the Kings want to see everyone available at the end of the season?
If Jordan is Petrie’s guy, I’d rather they jumped on him quick and let him start working with this group NOW.

I agree with you Otis
If Jordan is a temporary guy, I’d really like to see him, and Carril, work with this group. I don’t think this team will work miracles, but there is possibility.

Yep
This season is done as far as any hope of making the playoffs. But this young lineup needs to hear a longterm voice as soon as possible.

I know home is DC Eddie, but consider Sac your 2nd will ya? Coach these guys. (And I repeat. No Coach should pine to have Brad Miller part of this team any longer. That is why I think Reggie got canned. Gut feeling, and I’m saying it before the details come out, which I know Sam will get.)

No doubt
It’s gonna be interesting to hear the low-down on this decision, from both Kings management and Theus himself.
My guess is that Theus will be gracious – if he’s interested in getting another coaching gig in the NBA. If not, we might get some dirt.

I don’t think was the right call. I wish we would have seen a trade today or some other kind of shake up. We will not improve or develop under an interim coach. Either hire Jordan or another coach now. Not good Kings….

Timing makes sense
The Kings have a tough schedule in the upcoming week or so, but one VERY winnable game first. If the organization wanted to make a change before the all-star break, it seems wise to give the new coach a chance at a winnable game.
That being said, I don’t think I like this move. We’ll have to wait and see

I agree with everything you said
And I’m not sure why this move is done. But it very much sounds like a Petrie move, and not a Maloof one. That in of itself may be the best sign. (But if that’s the case, it could also mean the Kings hold onto MIller, and that’s a very dumb move.)

Theus’ fate has been in Petrie’s hands since the 0-4 start. He has waited it out.

Because if that’s the case, I’m totally on board with this. I’ve always liked EJ, and thought he was dealt a shitty hand. If he wants to take this team over, more power to him. In fact, I say bring in Pete while you’re at it. Mr Carril, as we all know, is wonderful with young talent. They respect him, and he respects them.

I think the Maloofs made the call. The reason being is because Chuck Person is gone too. Joe Maloof specifically mentioned disdain for Chuck and his defense.

No problem
I have no problem with this move. And the reason why is that the team was simply not responding to him any longer. The effort simply has not matched last season’s. I don’t know if losing Artest was a bigger factor than we would like to admit; but there is a leadership vacuum and an intensity vacuum on this team. Now, obviously, this is not a great team – not even a good one. But it has some talent. And to see them just tank games like Denver and NY is not acceptable. Very bad for an already very bad business climate at Arco. A change was needed. This change addresses one side of the equation. Personnel is yet another discussion.
Whomever we get to coach, he needs to more than anything be a motivator and a person who insists on oncourt discipline. By that I mean that he needs to have a consistent and recognizable offensive and defensive philosophy and insist on its implementation. No more of the pick up game BS that I’ve seen all season. And the first time John Salmons nearly dribbles out the fucking 24 second clock, his ass needs to spend a few mins on the bench considering it.

Agree with this:
This change addresses one side of the equation. Personnel is yet another discussion.
I think there’s a feeling amongst some that we are looking at an either/or situation – as in, this was a duel between the players and Theus and Theus lost.
I really doubt that’s the case – it appears that Brad at the very least may be on his way out.
Someone as smart as Petrie is going to understand that this wasn’t 100% Theus’ fault.

If your players don’t know the basics, like don’t get in a running game with a running team, for example, you are going nowhere.

I was at the Knicks game
and as you all know – it was a wretched start. Wretched, a great word not used enough.
I personally think as many here know, that the personality make-up of this team is wrong – we need an Alpha male, a sane version of Ron-Ron.
I don’t think it was Theus’ fault – though I think that the next few games will tell for sure. But this team doesn’t have enough fire in thier bellies. That comes from the players, from team leadership…
I do think they need to be shaken-up somehow but would have preferred it come from a trade, which is probably immenent(sp?).

I can see why it happened, I don’t necessarily disagree with the decision. But there was part of me that thought Theus had (still has?) the potential to be a quality NBA head coach down the road.
That may still be the case, just not with a team following Petrie’s vision for the future.

But, then again, this team needs a fresh voice. And I think Bullets Forever, the devout followers of Les Boulez, will point out that EJ wasn’t playing any young players on the Bullets roster when he got fired. In fact, that’s probably the reason he was fired.

Disagree
Two points that differentiate Wash and Sac. If you’ve ever watched Washington consistently, you’d know their young guys would drive you absolutely crazy. They are a talented but very undisciplined bunch. In addition, EJ needed to put wins up on the board as the Wizards had playoff aspirations this season.

Conspiracy Theory
I wonder if Coachie had anything to do with Petrie’s decision. You know, he saw the game and everything on Saturday. He probably thought that Reggie had lost the team. It certainly seems like it after all.
This is better for Reggie in the long run. Petrie did the right thing and ending this. However, and I say however, if he doesn’t trade Miller because he wants to get more than getting Shawn Marion (especially since Kenny Thomas is such a poison pill), then I think there is a huge mistake. 2 young players will be on this roster next year barring a trade of either pick, and having extra roster spots os always a good thing. I hope this is the start of quality news for this team. All I can say at this point. Excuse me while I get my paws grubby with cheesy cheez-it’s.

What I want for Christmas
Petrie should have a very busy week. Some things need to be done very soon to right the ship.
1. Hire a legitimate long term replacement for Theus hopefully EJ.
2. Pull the trade on a Miller deal. Either for Marion with K9 or for Kirk and Tyrus. I don’t care just get Spencer at the 5 for the new coach immediately.
3. Repeat 3
4. Send half the front office to Italy and Spain to start recruiting the PG of the future.

I think just by dumping him it will fire up the rest of the team. The lack of Defense is contagious and Hawes will have a fire under him if he is given the starting C role. That along with a new coach should add some urgency to this group.

So is Kirk/Tyrus, these are both deals we could live with. Think of Beno as our combo guard off the bench matching skills with Garcia, Kirk running the show, shooting threes with Martin- clearing lanes for Salmons and Hawes. petrie watched while rome burned saturday...
i was at the game and was struck by two things. In the worst first quarter i’ve seen in years, RT did almost nothing… didn’t get pissed, didn’t bench anyway, hardly even yelled. In the third quarter when the young kings made a run, after a third dunk (by JT, i think), DiAntoni came unglued… called timeout, stormed the court and screamed at about three knicks players… that ended the run and locked up the game. GP stood in the tunnel and watched it all… game over – coaching career over.

Except for Mikki Moore (who I actually was impressed on the “leadership” he showed on the bench, as far as clapping and trying to get the team fired up) and Donte who was having a lot of fun. it’s not a shock to me, but I wish they just rode it out.

Funny. I do think the Knicks inspire
Think of what the disaster they were last year. Thomas gets the boot; Walsh D’Antoni in, revitalized program. So you’re a GM, the Knicks come in, kick your ass and you say, “Shit. THey sucked last year. Look what a new coach did for them.” And boom. Your coach is gone.

Btw
Great links TZ. All good calls at the time (I had forgotten the pissing contest with Levien at the start of the year over Martin’s injury), but, I also think this had little to do with Levien too. I just think it was clear Reggie wasn’t part of this team’s future. This is a good thing for Reggie overall. Now he gets to figure out where he goes from here. He can take his time, or pick a fledgling/struggling Div 1 program to rebuild. (Sac State if they throw enough money at him? That would be AWESOME!)

I'm just not sure
the make-up of the team seems to suck from my perspective. Maybe I’m wrong and they’ll run off a bunch of wins – but I doubt it without a roster shake-up.
And if its really about the make-up of the roster, and we’ll see because there clearly is Talent there, what was the point of not solving that first?
Cisco? Cisco? CISCO!!!! #*$!%! !

Sure
And I’m not saying the coach sucked…but clearly there is that possibility.
Thing is, I’m not sure a trade needs to be made to shake things up, as that is not really the endgame here…molding the young talent is really the point. But in big-boy sports, you have to also win a bit to keep butts in the seats, and blowout losses at home to marginal teams is a sure-fire way to get canned.

The way I'm feeling about this now I've got my collective thoughts together
There are 2 different ways to judge this firing. Either A) he had lost the team, and it needed a totally different voice. Or B) Reggie knew the makeup wasn’t working, and he couldn’t keep playing, say, Brad Miller to raise his trade value if he ever stopped pouting/struggling. I wonder if this was the real reason Reggie was fired. There is not a worse way to prepare Natt for tonight’s game then to fire Reggie & Chuck Person the day of the game. I think something was said last night, and it was talked over, and Petrie decided that Reggie’s coaching wouldn’t force his hand on whether he traded Brad Miller sooner or later.
Here’s the problem. I think Reggie’s right. I also don’t know if the solution was Reggie’s coaching, or the makeup, but I’m very sure this team is much worse with Brad “Pouty Joint” Miller. If he doesn’t leave this team, he’s going to drag it down. And you know what, he’s trying to force a trade out of here. I hope Petrie pulls a Miller/Kenny Thomas (because moving Thomas salary totally off the books is like getting a good draft pick in the exchange if you ask me) for Marion deal because that cap room is just totally invaluable. If Petrie holds up because Kenny Natt doesn’t have that kind of power, screw him. He doesn’t have the right to make this team totally unwatchable because he wants to make a straight flush into a royal flush for a team where hitting that extra 10 feet on a home run won’t make them even a playoff team. Or at the very best a probable 8th seed.
If Petrie threw Theus out of the door because he had an opinion, then screw him. I want to see details. I NEED to see details. (I will always maintain Petrie screwed the Kings up by keeping Artest. He could have selected Greene with the 20th overall pick that Denver would have given up.)

Weird
I just don’t get all the Brad Miller anger around here. Sure, he’s played poorly (to his standards) this season. But he’s also been in these down ruts before – and the upswing is generally great for the team.
That may be why Reggie was continuing to play Brad big minutes, not to showcase him necessarily, but because he knew that Brad playing at a high level means a better basketball team.
In all honesty, I don’t think Brad’s on-court demeanor is drastically different than it was when he was playing at an All-Star caliber level. And I doubt he’s the kind of guy that is a cancer as a teammate. He’s just played poorly IMO – making him the whipping boy for this team’s performance might be a red herring.

I agree re: Miller
His lack of defensive effort isn’t exactly new, and his offense has been a mixed bag. I don’t think he’s played poorly on purpose — the system’s just not organized and he’s much better on a winner than a rebuilder (like Artest and Bibby).

Not in the NY game
Miller’s poor defense on the pick & rolls account for at least 13pts in the 1st quarter. It was his coverage of Jefferies on a switch with Donte that had the entire NY bench laughing.

Fair Enough
But that’s not all of the dynamic right now going on. This is the first time Brad has ever had to look over his shoulder and see somebody who can replace him. Ego is a big thing with him. (I think that’s why he wanted Shawes to carry that backup for the full 82. Brad’s just that kinda guy.)

I'm not saying that's a bad thing for Spencer
Overcoming bullshit is part of making a push to become a core level player in this league. In the long run, that may be part of where’s Brad real accomplishment came. In being an asshole to Shawes, he ended up providing that extra mental edge to establish himself as early as possible. So if that’s true, perhaps waving goodbye to Brad and thinking the better of him is wise. (I’ll be happy he’s gone, but like Bibby & Artest, thrilled he’s gone.)

when he’s confortable, when he KNOWS who’ll be playing, who he’ll be dishing to and what thier abilities are. A young team thats changing, an injured team with a lot of new guys ect.. is just wrong for him.
And as has been noted many times before, he’s that complimentary player that needs someone else to play most of the minutes in the post to be at his best.

Agreed. The continued bag carrying non-sense was masculine panic
But so are constant flagrant fouls post no foul call. And if I tried hard enough I could probably associate all sorts of character flaws to the threat to his masculinity. Same with Theus. Both have lots of upside too. I think GP probably determined that there are enough things wrong in Kingstown that the citizens are demoralized and shake up is needed before the town is fully deserted. Thus starts the search for the cancer. Who’s a problem? Who’s not? If we cut out this piece of cancer do we lose a whole organ? Is that organ vital or is it the spleen? Can I trade those liver scraps in for a whole one, even if it is temporary and slightly blackened with psoriasis? Okay let’s do it then. Or maybe he is just feverish from his illness.

And lttg noted above
Our 3-point defense has been abysmal, atrocious, inept, disastrous and generally a travishamockery to the league. I’m not quite sure how Brad affects that clear weakness on the team (although he obviously affects others, like the layup line we see quite often from the opposition).

I don’t really believe that KMart forced this. I’m just saying that it is possible that you can publicly say the right thing when your Coach says he can’t rely on you in clutch situations, and yet also hold a grudge and be pissed at the guy at the same time.
No coincidence that Levien and Thorpe went on record criticizing Theus for his comment. Not likely that they spoke without KMart’s approval.
but the stuff about KMart inserting Levien to do his bidding – I was just having fun. I do believe that GP has respected Levien’s basketball mind from the Hedo negotiations and before KMart blossomed into a star.

Also folks
Sam says this on his updated blog entry, which I do not find to be good news, unless Natt proves to be a brilliant guy, which is always possible I suppose:
While Natt will have 58 games to prove himself and perhaps earn a chance of retaining the job beyond this season, the Kings are expected to begin a coaching search for the third time in the last four summers. Unemployed coaches Flip Saunders and Eddie Jordan, should they still be available, will likely be pursued. Jordan is reportedly a candidate to take over in Philadelphia, and the Kings could make another change long before the summer based on such circumstances of urgency as well.
This is not soothing news as I had hoped that Natt was just an interim guy on an interim basis. (Sorry for the bad pun.)

Is that he didn’t hire any assistants with major coaching experience. He needed a Del Harris or Pete Carril to help him figure out a solid offensive and defensive scheme. I think that perhaps he was doomed from the start.

With this team Reggie was doomed to fail, and if he didn’t win 35+ games the Maloofs were going to fire him anyways. Only a miracle of making it to the playoffs would have saved Reggie his job.
At least now he can rest and go on with the rest of his life.
Good luck & thanks for trying Reggie

Not a huge Theus fan, but not happy about it either
I personally wasn’t thrilled with the decision to hire him, but still hoped he was what the maloof’s were desperately searching for. Hopefully Natt will last more than a week seeing how the maloof’s are “hire and fire” happy right now.
Guess Theus can say goodbye to NBA for now and his little silicone model
