Game 20: Jazz at Kings

Utah Jazz at Sacramento Kings, Dec 2, 2008 7:00 PM PST

Suddenly I stop
But I know it's too late
I'm lost in a forest
All alone

It's always the same
I'm running towards nothing

JAZZ, WHO ARE YOU?

The Jazz lack Carlos Boozer and Andrei Kirilenko, according to early reports. Utah has the 4th best offense in the league and the 15th ranked defense. The team plays super slow, so the people inside your TV never acknowledge that Utah, at its current state, has a great offense and a mediocre defense. Also, in the common mindset of the TV people, fouling a lot means you care about defense. But fouling a lot just means you foul a lot, and it's actually bad for your defense. Utah fouls a lot, and it's bad for its defense.

Deron Williams will bust your ass on the pick-and-roll all day and all night. Little-known fact: Mehmet Okur hates shooting, and became Turkey's greatest 7-foot jump shooter begrudgingly. He really wants to stand under the rim and dunk all day, like Dwight Howard or Jarron Collins. Paul Millsap is what they* call a load.

* They=Jerry Reynolds.

YOUR SACRAMENTO KINGS

John Salmons and Kevin Martin are game-time decisions. I don't think Martin will shoot us in the heart. He knows half of us only woke up today on the chance he'd play. (The other half loves tacos, and it is Taco Tuesday suckers!) Spencer Hawes will start at power forward alongside Brad Miller. Francisco Garcia is still alive.

BOLD WAGER

See the poll below. If a majority of StR voters guess incorrectly, Kenny Thomas gets nacho cheese all over the suit.

THE TIP

In a pinch, vodka makes for an excellent hand sanitizer.

THE REAL TIP

The game is set for 7PM PST. Let's go Kings.

Hey!

No fair influencing the vote. I’m not sure which way to vote now.

What if K9 wears a nacho colored suit? Then what? Can you give him a lube job instead? Woof!

Yea I voted who I thought was incorrect just in the hopes of seeing K9 ruin the suit he bought with salary cap space

Napear: "Going in to the final timeout what did the coach tell you?"
Bibby: "I asked the coach if I should go and he said, I don't really know what he said."

I agree with you Kfan

You know my feelings on Moore & Bjax. I’m just saying, that it makes sense that Cisco wouldn’t be on the floor late, especially since the KIngs are trying to get him in a flow before he takes the floor for all the necessary mins. Integrating a player into your flow is not always as simple, as simply playing him. It’s a bit more complicated than that. No matter how many jokes we make about staying at the Holiday Inn Express.

The thing about that is, there’s no way in hell you’ll ever get me to believe that Douby is more “in the flow” with this offense than Cisco is.

by Viliphied on Dec 2, 2008 9:51 PM PST up reply actions

I’d much rather cisco risk missing those shots late because he’s not “in the flow” than Douby even have the opportunity to take them.

Who said I'm trying to make you buy that argument

I don’t believe it. I just want Cisco healthy for the long run, and playing him at the end of games is not necessarily an intelligent way to go about doing that.

I really hope, as Kfan said, that Cisco didn’t hurt his calf again. Although I doubt that was the case. I really liked that Cisco got on the court tonight again. Overall, I think it woudl have been great if he could have come off the bench, but whatever. (I also think Bjax would never have sniffed court time had Salmons not been out of the game.)

Are injuries really more likely to occur at the end of games though? I’m not necessarily saying that he should have played more minutes than he did, and I wouldn’t be upset to learn they had a hard limit on his minutes. I just don’t agree with distributing them that way.

by Viliphied on Dec 2, 2008 10:00 PM PST up reply actions

No I'm not saying that at all

I’m saying that trying to get Cisco back into the flow at the end of the game is far more difficult than at earlier stages. I agree with what Reggie did.

I also think the players lost it by not taking advantage of an Utah team that turned the ball over 18, read that again, 18, times in the 1st half.

I think, though,

that it would have been easier to get Garcia in the flow than Douby, who had been sitting on the bench for the last few hours.

by cbsf on Dec 2, 2008 10:59 PM PST up reply actions

The thing is,

with the pressure Theus seems to be getting from the Maloof’s, I would assume he was coaching to win this game. Every loss adds to the chances of him getting canned. So, unless Garcia aggravated his injury, having him in there during the final minutes would have given the team the best chance to win. As much as I root for Douby to play well, he doesn’t seem to perform well under pressure. Add to that the fact that he hadn’t played at all earlier in the game and putting him in at that point in the game wasn’t a good decision. I would even say it wasn’t fair to Douby because that is a very difficult situation for him to succeed in.

by cbsf on Dec 2, 2008 10:55 PM PST up reply actions

Against Medical advise?

IF Theus played Cisco or Martin past the time set by the medical staff and one of them reinjured themself or had a more serious injury, then Theus is fired the next morning. Plus there’s a chance that he never gets a head coaching job again.

Turns out that's exaclty what happened
While Martin’s minutes were supposed to be capped at 25, he played 32

and

He couldn’t call on his most clutch player in Francisco García, the swingman who had ice wrapped around his recovering right calf and whose night ended with a decision from the player and the medical team that 31 minutes in his third game back from injury would be enough.

from the Bee game recap.

So it wasn’t Theus who kept Cisco out, it was Cisco and the medical staff, and time mismanagement by Theus, and Theus overplayed Martin. Luckily it doesn’t look like there was a reinjury.

I don’t get Quincy Douby substitution but the Jazz deserved that one because Deron Williams showed why he’s a superstar in the league especially in the clutch.

Douby in for BJax

Jackson had just been burnt by Kover for two 3’s, one where jackson left him so far open Kover could have bonced the ball 3 times and Jackson still couldn’t have recovered. And, the 2nd time, Kover just shot over Jackson from the top of the key. Reggie needed someone to defend Kover, so Donte wouldn’t be a first option. That only left Douby. Cisco would have been the 1st option, but the coaching staff did a piss poor job managing his time.

As for pookey comment about bring in Brown, that would have worked offensively but isn’t Brown to small to cover Kover.

Martin

was playing the 3 with Beno and BJax in the lineup, so putting in Donté would have allowed Martin to move back to the 2 and cover Korver.

Martin may have been playing the 3

but, BJax was on Kover who was playing the 3.
Williams & Almond at guard
Korver and Milsap at forward
Okur at center.

Korver is 6’ 7" & Almond is 6’ 5" So BJax had no business defending either. Greene was tall enough with inferior D. Douby has better D but is 6’ 3". Neither is a good choice in my opinion. But have it your way Martin can cover Korver and Greene can cover Almond.

Proof of this is the play down the stretch in all the close games they’ve had.

by Apoet on Dec 2, 2008 9:41 PM PST up reply actions

Exactly

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that they can compete at times, then suddenly blow the game. It’s been happening all last year. What I’ve observed is that Reggie often makes stupid substitutions to kill the flow of the game, at the worst times. If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it.

It’s a sign that Reggie is a poor leader, as well. He wants to keep changing things around, rather than having a consistent plan.

by CloudyEyes on Dec 2, 2008 9:44 PM PST up reply actions

could we read into this?

i find it a little weird…..that there has obviously been some sort of message from the front office to start spencer and possibly begin this so called youth movement.

so looking at the box score, i see that the younger guys played probably the least number of minutes of the season (thats a guess). could this have been reggie deciding to go all out with the older squad for one last roll of the dice??

i’m just confused that’s all!

by thisismellow on Dec 2, 2008 9:42 PM PST reply actions

Thompson & Moore played similar mins

(Moore almost 13 JT almost 12.) I don’t think Reggie didn’t do anything that wasn’t expected of him. Playing Spencer more mins was what I think Geoff wanted in particular.

There was no excuse for this one

Bobby missed way too many shots
Mikki did nothing
Missed a ton of easy shots and layups
Didn’t capitalize on a ton of turnovers
Douby in the clutch
Where was JT?
Why not try Greene and Brown over Douby and Jackson?

Because throwing in the towel on veterans is not always a good move long term

I’m not saying Reggie’s right, but I can’t imagine there is any other reasoning past that.

by pookeyguru on Dec 2, 2008 9:45 PM PST up reply actions

That depends entirely on the veterans. I’m not happy with the amount of minutes Moore got, but I am unhappy with what he did with them. However, Douby shouldn’t have any sort of trusted veteran status, and Jackson’s been showing that he’s over the hill all season. There is no way that Greene and Brown would have been worse options.

by Viliphied on Dec 2, 2008 9:47 PM PST up reply actions

Look if you had better veterans

You’d be winning a lot more games. This is becoming a circle jerk round about argument. The only thing this team isn’t doing is winning a lot of games. A lot of other good stuff is happening with this team. I’m not saying this team is brilliant, or that Moore needs mins, or even Bjax (actually I’ve said that all along he was finished), and among other things, starting Shawes with Miller was a mistake (still feel justified saying that), along with the idea that this team’s injuries are costing it perimeter defense, along with helping inside to compensate for guys like Miller or Shawes. So at some point, for a mediocre team, making so many decisions will cost you. And it has.

No mistakes in the tango, darling. Not like life. It's simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get tangled, you tango on

by pookeyguru on Dec 2, 2008 9:53 PM PST up reply actions

Again

respectfully disagree. Brown and Greene would have been better options than BJax and Douby. Why weren’t they in? Brown and Greene may be unknown quantities. They may be as bad, but there’s no way they could be worse. The possibility of suck is always better than known quantities of suck.

I have no qualms with how the minutes were handed out in the first ~40 mins of the game, but leaving Jackson in there that long, and then putting Douby in to end it, well, there better have been a better reason than “getting his confidence back” or “playing the veterans”

by Viliphied on Dec 2, 2008 9:58 PM PST up reply actions

Why are we arguing this?

I’ve already said that! LOL (I’m just trying to point out that there is not necessarily one consideration here.)

BRING BACK MUSSELMAN!!!!

Ok, not really, but now that i have your attention, let me go through the number of coaching mistakes in this game.

1. The Douby decision. Put in Bobby Brown. Put in Garcia. Put in BJax. Put in somebody who freaking played in the game

2. Garcia doesn’t see the ENTIRE fourth quarter?

3. Mikki Moore/Jason Thompson frontcourt is awfully mismatched. Mikki really needs to be sent to the end of the bench, next to Shelden and K9

4. Speaking of JT, WTF was up with that 3 minute stint in the early second? Only 11 total minutes? One total FGA? BOOOO!

5. Play calls out of timeouts, spacing was STILL awful.

I am really losing confidence in Theus. Just the most bizarrely coached Kings game I’ve ever seen.

by Scirocco on Dec 2, 2008 10:05 PM PST reply actions

Theus needs to be fired

the team hasn’t quit on him, but his decisions are simply idiotic and are costing the team wins.

Good grief Charlie Brown

No Boozer, no Kirilenko…playing on the road and turning the ball over about a bajillion times…and the Jazz still win?

And oh lookie, now we get a home and home with arguably the best team in the NBA.

Ok, I get that this isn’t all Reggie’s fault – but this is getting ridiculous. There are legitimate concerns with Reggie’s player rotations and substitution decisions (including Doubying us AGAIN) as well as his playcalls out of timeouts.

At some point, you can only make so many excuses. This was a game the Kings would have lost by 25 if the Jazz were healthy and had valued the ball the way they normally do. There is still no coherent offensive or defensive philosophy that I can see, and Mikki Moore is still appearing on my television screen from time to time.

Most of the Theus apologists say “well he’s only had 20 games”. Uh, no…he’s had 102 games by my somewhat wine-induced count. There should be some tangible system in place at this point. IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK???

Coach Theus, the clock is ticking.

QUINCY. DOUBY. IS. DONE.

I like the guy’s personality, and you can’t keep yourself from rooting for him. But, he’s proven himself to be quasi-clutch. I fear he is destined for a piece of pine just up-bench from K9(woof!). Hopefully we can include him in a trade that will bring him a fresh scene and possibly a new chance at some confidence.

Wait....Why is everybody clapping? Everyone around me is clapping.... I guess I should be clapping too... GO LAKERS!!! I hate living in So Cal

Your owners criticizing you in the media. Terrible execution down the stretch of close games. The worst defense in the league. I think Reggie Theus’s days may be numbered.

some of these names are starting to sound pretty good.

But honestly, I doubt this Kings team would be drastically improved no matter who the coach is. Beyond this season, though, it would be nice to get someone with some credentials.

I would take AVERY...

in a heartbeat. He’d pull Beno aside and yell at him until he stops making horrible passes.

However, I’d like to give Theus at least 20 more games with a full squad before canning him. I don’t think it’s his fault that Beno makes poor decisions, Brad can’t execute or that B-Jax is 2 steps slower. I’d rather lose with Douby than another turnover by Beno or another brick by Brad.

- Hawes should have finished out the 3rd, fancy pass or not.
- J.T. should have been given some of the minutes that Brad used to disappear or complain.
- Donte should have been given some of the minutes that B-Jax used to throw up bricks.
- It’s always good to see K-Quick back.

Let’s hope ’Cisco is okay. Win or Lose – GO KINGS!

Time to limit the rotation

Too many players. Too many lineups to develop any consistency.

Let’s separate the group into who’s part of the future, who maybe is and who definitely isn’t:

FUTURE
Hawes
JT
Greene
Martin
Garcia

MAYBE
Salmons
Beno
Brown
Shelden

NOT
Miller
Moore
BJax
Douby
K9

These top nine guys should get the bulk of the playing time. The top five should start or play starter minutes, and the bottom four should be traded or ride a lot of pine.

It’s pretty obvious looking at that list that the Kings are going to need to find an elite point guard in the draft to go anywhere in the future, and that player is not currently on the team.

The way Miller lost the ball on that last sequence last night is typical of his weakness. He’s been just awful this year for the most part. Deal him already.

Shelden Williams probably doesn’t warrant that “maybe” status, but at least he is a big body that isn’t afraid to bang a little. I am so sick and tired of seeing soft bigs that I’d rather Shelden get the backup big man minutes than Miller and Moore.

Frankly, I don’t care who plays, but Jesus, Reggie, find a rotation and go with it so players can grow into their roles. You are starting to coach like Musselman.

It’s ironic that we are rating Beno ahead of Duhon before the resigning, and suddenly that looks like a mistake.

I don’t know if there was ever a window where we could have canned Theus and brought in D’Antoni to coach, but if there was, we missed out. I think even Douby would have thrived in that scenario.

Brad's played somewhat poorly by his standards this year

And the retaliation fouls and technicals are getting pretty cliche…you can pretty much call it before it happens anymore.

But the guy is still an effective player, and I don’t get why he is everyone’s whipping boy. You read the game thread and you’d think he laid an egg last night.

18 points, 8 rebounds, 1 assist (admittedly low for his standards), 1 turnover (admittedly low as well), 4 blocks.

His defense stinks, but if you are going to talk about defense on this squad…who’s doesn’t? Maybe Salmons gets a pass, but there ain’t a bunch of Sidney Moncriefs running around out there.

As an aside, has anyone checked the Roland Ratings for the current season? Everyone’s other favorite whipping boy, Beno Udrih, currently has the highest number on the squad…of course, you have to go way down the list just to find any Sacramento King, which tells you just how bad they have been.

Damn, I miss that feeling after the road win in New Orleans. What happened to that team?

I think you missed the "point"

No pun intended. I just think Cisco should be among the five players who log the most minutes, even if that is coming off the bench. Beno and Brown should still split the PG minutes, but this is an area that is crying for an upgrade.
