Game #30: Raptors at Kings

Toronto Raptors at Sacramento Kings, Dec 26, 2008 7:00 PM PST

I don't mean to distract from the game at hand, a disappointing Raptors team coming West to spar with a napalm(ed/ing) Kings team, but ... let me distract myself.

I'm trying to figure out how Toronto has been so bad with Chris Bosh, such a masterful player. I mean, he came into the season as a darkhorse MVP candidate ... and played like it for a few weeks. But the general malaise surrounding that team has cut his culture into bits, and Bosh is the type of player that comes off infinitely better when he wins. (Like Elton Brand, Chris Webber, Antawn Jamison ... basically any mercurial four.) With the right program, Bosh is a top 5 player. On a losing team, he's not everything you want. As a superstar, expectations get out of hand. There's only so many ways the public blame gets sliced, you know?

It's sad, really. Many fans in Toronto have been brutal, as if it is Bosh's fault that there isn't a quality scorer but he on the roster. Or that Andrea Bargnani can't even put bits together, let alone the whole package. Or that the point guard depth behind Jose Calderon is a bad joke, and that the depth at two-gard INCLUDING Anthony Parker is way bad.

And though Martin has been injured for all but nine games, it's a similar situation here. Grant Napear has been downright catty (surprise) when it comes to Martin on the radio and during games. "This team might have a chance if IT COULD EVER get Kevin Martin back." Yes, the chap loves sitting on the sidelines and watching his less spectacular teammates get blown to smithereens. Of course he does. It hasn't gotten quite to Peja/Bonzi levels yet, but the chirping from the lowest level of area fans -- the level of fans that gets onto sports talk radio, natch -- is distressingly awful. Francisco Garcia didn't sit out despite feeling OK. Martin isn't either. If he's not playing, he can't play.

People see Martin in a suit, they see the team's record. "Kevin Martin can't lead a team!" And you know what else, bub: Sherman wouldn't win the War on Terror. When you aren't on the floor, you can't win. And when you have to cover for at least two and often three other positions (Bosh), you can't win. There are metaphysical restrictions placed on Earthly beings. Even the stars (non-LeBron division) must follow them.

Maybe one day the pair can bring happiness to the World together, as one. Hint hint. Cough. Ahem.

Game's at 7. Go Kings.

Bosh for Napear

I’d do this trade in a minute, and twice on Sundays.

And even if Bosh only did play-by-play.

Grant Napear is a hack. And I mean no offense to hacks when I say that.

Bargnani and Moon

Both of these players are WAY overrated. Bargnani is 7’0 and is a worse rebounder than Mikki Moore. Moon is very athletic. That’s it really. Parker has never been very good. O’Neal is a very good player but he may still not have found a way to fit in yet. Besides Calderon and Bosh, the rest of the cast are overrated and underwhelming. Kopono is perhaps the x-factor. If he is hot, Toronto can beat anybody.

I see that

But at the same time, starting does not suggest he’s better or even that he deserves it. It’s about matchups. If he’s not playing good h’ll come out. It just seems like a very scenario for him to start alongside Brad.

being in with Beno, Martin/Cisco, Salmons and MIller, he would not need to look to score. Just hit the boards, D up and get garbage points.

by Beagle12 on Dec 26, 2008 9:46 PM PST up reply actions

Actually I blame Petrie for that

You move Miller, and stop being patient looking for the “right” value. Of course, I’m cynical the Kings can get very much for Brad. But, I’m cynical, so keep it in mind.

The problem is Beagle, JT isn’t playing well enough to start, but he plays the type of game that would mesh better with Miller. I really think Shawes needs to come off the bench, but at the same time, starting him with Miller means he’s gets to play against the best players in the league. That’s good for Spencer.

So it has come to this ???

This season is in the dumper. Need we mention the nightly colapse of the mound of dung that some call Brad Miller? Another washed up center made to look like an all world player scoring on Miller. Oneil is totally washed up, has no vertical lift, and plays on one leg, but he beat Miller like a rented mule early and often. Miller Bitches about not getting calls, but if you have NO vertical leap, give NO effort to rebound and NO effort to defend, the refs are NOT going to give you anything. Beno is officially a BUST. Not sure what he was taking last year, but he doesnt have it this year and shows no signs of never having it again. I can see our young bigs losing faith in their teamates a little more every game, and their effort has decreased as well. Why work hard when Miller and Beno are going thru the motions, and so many team mates are mailing it in. Some players are in suits parked in the stands and they are mailing it in. This team is pathetic, and it is time we took a long hard look at Geoff Petrie and examine his drafts and free agent aquisitions that have brought us to this point. Is there a plan? What is the plan? Why do we keep playing Miller when he does more harm than good? Are we auditioning him for another team, because he loses more value every time he plays. Why not Bench Miller and start the Young Bigs? Beno is terrible, so why not play Brown more? What free agent moves is Petrie going to make, and do they make sense in the short term or the long term? Will Petrie panic, or will he freeze up and do nothing as he has done in the last 2 years? What is the Maloof plans for the team, since it has become apparent that they are not making any real effort or headway toward a new arena? Why are bad players allowed to have so much playing time? Do we really need to see that PUTZ Miller and his OLE’ defense 40 minutes a game? Do we really need to see Beno get broke down like a folding chair time and time again every night? Do we really need to come here after every lackluster effort and post our flustrations over and over without any change or hope? If the Kings do lose 60 + games and do not end up with a top 3 draft pick, is the league rigged by Stern just as we all thought? Don’t you hate watching the Kings lose and then have a mediocre draft and then make mediocre free agent aquisitions?

Personally, I have little hope for the Kings at this point. I only hope that Petrie can make a trade that will change the current direction of this train wreck, because this is the worst basketball I have seen in years. Lets all hope that all this losing gives us a top 3 draft pick, and we aquire an all star, because we have no one that is or can be a star on this roster. I believe Martin knows this so he is in no hurry to come back to a team that sucks…What are the Kings going to do? Is it acceptable to lose like this with lackluster effort and mail it in defense? Do we fire Natt too? Firing Theus didnt fix anything (not that anyone thought it would), so who do we fire now? What do we have in trade bait that other teams want?

5 Brown ….. Young and raw. Slight trade value
8 Douby ….. Useless and worthless as trade bait
32 Garcia…… Hot and Cold player who lacks athleticism – some trade worth
20 Donte ….. Young and Promising. Some trade potential
31 Hawes ….. Has regressed recently- really cant trade without seeing potential
24 Bobby ….. If Heart won games, he would be unstoppable…. but time has taken its toll
23 Martin ….. Looks comfy on the IR – Only player with some skill – wont trade
52 Miller ….. The B-52 BUMMER. Mound of steaming worthless dung. Hard to dump
33 Moore ….. See above. Tanked after getting benched. Worthless and unprofessional.
15 Salmons ….. Our MVP but shot is hot cold and turns the ball alot – some trade value
9 KT ….. Wadda worthless pile of garbage. Makes me want to puke. No Value
23 JT ….. The Teams future, but will he want to stay in this crater?? Much trade value
19 Beno ….. Biggest dissapointment. Got $$ now on perm vacation, Pathetic. No value
22 Sheldon ….. Another pile of dung. Fat, slow , and unmotovated. BUST w/no value

So by my count the Kings have 7 players that are tradeable, but 4 of those players are young future pieces that Petrie paid dearly for and likely will not trade without a lot more in return than most teams will concider. So really the Kings only course is to tank, dump salary, and hope for a good draft, good free agent pool to pick from, and luck. A LOT of LUCK. Or somehow Petrie pulls off the trade of his CAREER (yes bigger even than the Webber for the Rock Trade) before the Feb 19 deadline. With the pieces he has that he can move, I cant see any conceivable way the Kings can make a trade of any real substance without trading the future. It will be interesting to see what Petrie will do, because he is painted into a corner and he has to act. If he does not, then a new GM is in order. I said this summer that Petrie was going to earn his check this season, now it the time for him to start earning it. Winning solves a lot of problems, but losing makes problems multiply like the plague.

Contract value isn't purely based on skill

Contracts have value when they expire, as well. It doesn’t matter who the person is…whether it be K9, Marbury, or your great grandmother, expiring contracts hold value, simply because it allows for other teams to dump their unwanted contracts onto you.

This can be positive if you’re trading to a team that wants to trade off its star and rebuild. For example, this is what the Celtics did to steal KG (for the most part…except for Al Jefferson). Another example is expiring contracts for Pau Gasol…basically trash for a star player.

We have one of the biggest salary dumps in the NBA for expiring contracts, during the 09-10 season. If Petrie plays his cards right, we may not even have to wait and sign a FA for 2010. We could trade our trash for somewhat of a valuable contract.

2009-2010, the Kings WILL have options.

Letting go is part of the process

No mistakes in the tango, darling. Not like life. It's simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get tangled, you tango on
