Game #31: Celtics at Kings

Boston Celtics at Sacramento Kings, Dec 28, 2008 6:00 PM PST

The World Champions visit ARCO for the only time until the NBA Finals in June. (Can't wait for that.) Everyone suspects the Celtics will be piping hot from the two straight Western losses (Lakers, Warriors). I don't know why you'd think that, though; everyone knows Kevin Garnett is a totally calm, relaxed dude and couldn't care less about games in December. Everyone knows guys like Paul Pierce and Ray Allen and Leon Powe don't just take games off -- they take entire weeks off.

Beno Udrih's ball-handling problems definitely won't be exploited by the best point guard defender since Gary Payton. Whichever lucky King starts at power forward won't get outhustled, outmuscled and outscreamed by reigning D.P.O.Y. You guys just aren't looking deep enough. You're not looking between the lines.

Easy Kings win. E-Z.

Game's an early bit, starts at 6. Do not engage in banter with the bandwagoneers. Repeat: DO NOT ENGAGE IN BANTER WITH BANDWAGONEERS! Those fairweather Kings fans, just showing up when the Kings have started to get good ... they don't deserve your attention.

For the Celtics fan's perspective, check out CelticsBlog.

Go Kings.

Its hard to have an offense

when they only have to guard 2 of the 5 guys on the floor. Cisco hasn’t made anything, Beno you only have to be vaguely in his area, and Mikki gets ignored on offense by teams more than Ben Wallace used to, and of course Mikki never makes them pay by rebounding.

Salmons

Actually, I think that Salmons is the only guy playing hard. He has no help so it’s not his fault. He can’t take on the whole team. He is going 1 on 5 because his teammates are so inept tonight.

Awesome

Question about the loteri (lol)?
Are the percentage based on record or position with respect to the whole league? And is it just the regular season or playoffs also count? Second question is more about the Rockets pickof course

by eduardo_m7 on Dec 28, 2008 8:25 PM PST up reply actions

Easy

The lotto balls for each team gets a certain percentage according to their record. (worst record 25% of lotto balls and so on & so forth.)

Playoff teams get draft picks according to record, yes.

The Rockets toughest part of the schedule is really early on Ed. So in fact, the Rockets record might be top 4 in the West. Still, another draft pick can’t hurt this team if Petrie is doing the picking right?

Pookey

you sure have a hard on for Miller lately

by KingsFan on Dec 28, 2008 8:47 PM PST up reply actions

Tired of him

Curious why everybody else isn’t on the same boat as me. It’s not my cynicism that matters here.

Bottom line is this: When you write in a game thread you hope the refs toss your veteran center cuz he’s a bitch & you can’t stand him, he’s not good for the team. He isn’t doing anything for this team other than putting up some #‘s, and with the type of mins he’s getting, he should be doing better.

At some point, I think the franchise is waiting to see how this team works with Martin on it. Petrie is so patient he wants to make sure of everything before he makes a move. (I fail to see how the Kings do anything more than compete with Martin on the floor. Blowing it up is part of the deal in rebuilding. Doing it sooner than later is always a good decision.)

by pookeyguru on Dec 28, 2008 8:52 PM PST up reply actions

Let me expand on the Martin point a little

One reason I bring up Kevin Martin is this. He’s the Kings best player right now. He & Brad Miller tend to have a quality connection on the court, and maybe what Petrie is hoping, and I’m noodling a bit here, is that the Martin return helps Miller find his mojo, and teams seeing that will see all hope is not lost with Brad Baby. If other teams believe he can fit into what they do, then that will make it easier for them to make that type of gamble. It’s probably just as simple as that.

I think everyone else realizes

That you can’t pin 30 plus point home losses on one guy. Brad’s become your punching bag, and you have a tendency to give him the business at the expense of everyone else.

Not saying he’s deserving of compliments, but you seem a bit…unbalanced in your criticism of Brad. This team stinks from top to bottom, and I’m not sure anyone really deserves to be off the hook, except for maybe John Salmons and Spencer Hawes.

I still don’t think B rad’s quit on the team, Aileen Voisin’s esteemed opinion notwithstanding. I think the guy is frustrated, and he can’t figure out how to get his game to where he wants it to be, or how to help this team not get embarassed.

Are we gonna live together? Together are we gonna live?

by otis29 on Dec 28, 2008 9:59 PM PST up reply actions

That's also true too

He’s the biggest problem, but is hardly the only one. That is certainly oh so very true.

I’m not picking on him only, for crying out loud there are people who say worse, it’s just that he’s the easiest solvable problem (unlike Beno) to fixing SOME of what currently ails this team. Kevin Martin is another part of the solution, and perhaps JT/Donté/Shawes is another bit of the solution too. Solution’s aren’t clear cut, I certainly can’t disagree with that, but to say that I’m putting all the blame on Brad is unfair. It’s just that he’s quit on this team. This team would have lost by 20 pts whether he had given it his “100% all.” But, this team was awful tonight, and finding any bright spot would be difficult.

Fair Enough

And I agree with you in that I think Brad needs to go, sooner rather than later. It’s pretty clear this team can lose plenty with or without him – if he is having a negative influence in the locker room and on the court (still not sure I believe this), the young guys aren’t really benefiting from his experience and “wisdom”. So what’s the point in keeping him? To get a marginally better deal? That doesn’t make much sense, IMO.

But if you want my honest opinion

I’m more frustrated by Kenny Natt putting Moore in the starting lineup than anything else. That only exercebates how bad Miller has been.

How does Spencer deserve to be off the hook?

You’ve got to be kidding, right?

Reading, it's fundamental
except for maybe John Salmons and Spencer Hawes.

Both of these guys have had their ups and down this season, thus the “maybe” meaning I think it’s a point you could argue either way.

I think Spencer’s going through a rough stretch, but overall he’s one of the few guys on the team who’s performance has improved over the 2007-2008 season IN MY OPINION (just adding that since you’re clearly addled).

coolcat

expects Hawes to be better than Kevin McHale, so given that expectation, I see why he’s disappointed.

On the other hand, a little earlier last week he said Hawes had no place in the league. Given this range of possiblities (either top 50 player of all time or drummed out of the league because he sucks), it sort of easy to see where coolcat is confused regarding Mr. Hawes.

I never said

I expected Spencer to be Kevin McHale.

I also didn’t say Spencer had no place in the league.

I don't care for 100 degree days (fahrenheit)

Only problem last night

was tripping over all the Celtics fans to get down there. Lowest priced ticket at game time was $89. I had to pay $68.50 × 2 to see that crap vs. 25.50 for the Raptors game.

have you taken a look at the january schedule. The Kings may not win a game until February.

I wouldn’t worry about the losses, I can positively say, they are going to happen.

Well...

A pleasure sharing this horrible game with you guys. Hope we come out and blow out the Clips, or at least lose by only single digits haha.

But seriously… this is just what we have to go through to get better in the future. I’m gonna enjoy it so much more when we are winning knowing that I was a fan during the bad times. Go Kings!!

Theory

I think Kevin’s foot is much better than we know. Maybe he’s not playing for one reason…

Tanking.

OK, I don’t believe that, but i thought I’d throw it out there.

could be worse… we didn’t finish a season winless (cough) 0-16

It was a good game, Both teams played hard. Both teams played hard, my man. Both teams played hard. Both teams played hard, God bless and good night.

Wow.

Didn’t break 20 in a single quarter.

That’s points, not total wins this year. Well, I said I could stand this for the greater good, but that, my dear friends, was fugly.
