Give Theus a Chance

Okay, I think all of the media and some outspoken fans need to settle down about the micro-management of teams losses and issues.   Dudes, there are so many issues on a team this young!   On a team with this many young guys, and a few vets who are struggling to find their own cohesiveness, and you add a young, inexperienced coach, what else did you think was going to happen?

Sometimes this stuff does magically come together.   Like in New Jersey, when Lawrence Frank took over, they headed to the Eastern Conference Finals.   But they also had a superstar in Jason Kidd, and a serious slasher Jefferson, and (damn, was Eddie House on that team?) and a few other great players in their prime.   And they were playing in the East, at a time when the East was cake, basically.

We all know that these players have talent, but it really does take time to develop and get used to the NBA game.   Most of the younger players have had the experience of being the best player on the teams they played in highschool, or college, and scoring at will over less talented players, etc.   Then they fast forward to the NBA, where they are average, talent wise, where everyone is just as fast, intense, athletic, etc, and it takes a while to adjust to it.   Compound that with the intense schedule, lack of real practice time, rest and planning (like in college) and you have some big adjustments headed your way.   Not to mention the fact that you are suddenly a millionaire...

It takes time to build confidence playing at this level.   Look at our best teams of recent years:   They almost all had some serious experience in the league already, having played for a number of coaches and teams, figured out the refs, a personal schedule that works, how to work with coaches, etc, and when they got to Sac, one way or another, they found a way to make it special.

What other team, other than the Kings, have affected the League in the same way, igniting excitement, passion, fun and joy in the game of basketball?   You can argue the Celtics last year, but it wasn't the same.   The Warriors play in '07 was exciting, and the Suns had some good runs too, but it didn't feel anything close to the same level as the Kings run....

The bottom line is, it sucks to lose, and it is easy to want to blame someone for the loss.   The refs stole the game.   So and so didn't play D, or missed some easy shots, or the Coach didn't call timeout, whatever.   But I think that we just have to keep our eyes on the little things that are encouraging, each game, and hang onto that, and build on those positives, and don't worry about the rumors, etc.

I wouldn't be so quick to get rid of the veterans, though.   The youngsters don't need that much pressure all on their shoulders, every game.   If they have too much pressure, too quickly, it can really mess with your head, so we need the veterans to balance and moderate the game, help hold the team together, etc.

It sucks that KT is on the bench and can't play or contribute, or that Greene and Williams have trouble getting off the bench, but it's a long season and their chances will come.   In the meantime, I think we just need time to trust that Geoff is doing everything he can to win, that Reggie is working as hard as he can to help the team develop and find a way to win.   Everyone is really trying to win, and it isn't easy, but the most important thing about the Kings was their passionate fans, and that they love and support their team.   Arco used to be a place where road teams feared to tread, and the home crowd was fun to play for.   Now, it seems like it sucks.

I wish I live close enough to see the games, or come to the arena if I could.   I would just love to see them all developing in person.   All of this Fire Theus Now stuff just is sad.   No one is going to win with this team instantly, so what the heck, let's just let him run with it and see what he can do with another month or two.    Besides, I doubt the Maloofs are going to pony up Avery Johnson type money, for several years guarrateed, while they are still paying Eric and Reggie too.    Anyway, I hope that I haven't offended anyone with my strong opinions, but I really get annoyed and depressed reading the super critical SacBee community bashing every article.   Of course, I have done my share of venting at times, but mostly I save it for bad reporting or lame stories, not our Kings players....

Go Kings!

Actually NYC

I agree with a lot of what you said. I’m not really sure that StR is that place totally; after all many of us have said firing Theus is a mistake. On the other hand, Theus has made mistakes, that in part, he shouldn’t be making, new coach or otherwise. If Douby has a poor track record, and you put him in down the stretch of a game, like he did vs Utah, and have him miss a shot, that will work against him. It’s the nature of the beast. But, and I say this agreeing with much of what you had to say, is that StR isn’t anti-Theus. There are more things going on with the franchise, and Theus isn’t just one of them.

I agree this team needs more time to get people off the rampage a little, and that sometimes takes a stretch to accomplish. I want to see this team healthy, and complete, with no mins restrictions on Kevin or Cisco, and I would like to see JT & Shawes always get consistent mins as they have been proven (so far) that with consistent mins they can produce. I say, let the trend continue.

Excellent post, btw.

I agree about Douby and Theus, too...

Definitely, Theus is making a lot of mistakes. I am not sure what his deal is, and why, and it must be infuriating, that’s for sure.

It seems like everyone is on the “play spencer and JT now” bandwagon, and I support that fully. I almost wish that we could have a Hubie Brown system, where everyone on the team knew they were going to get guarranteed minutes as a first unit, second unit kind of plan. But he didn’t win anything and in the long run, we want a coach who is creative, has a good connection with the players and can also teach the game to the youngsters!

I know that StR isn’t on the Fire Theus truck, honking the horn!

I guess Reggie realizes that this isn’t TV anymore….. because in those shows, Douby would have made those shots, and so would Salmons!

Here’s hoping for a great game tonight!

Maybe Hubie Brown has one last stint in him

None of these guys are Stromile Swift. That’s a GREAT idea!

There's a difference

Between criticizing a coach’s game decisions and calling for his head.

On the other hand, too many bad game decisions starts to make you wonder if Theus isn’t quite, quite ready to be at the helm.

The biggest worry

I had about Theus, when he was hired, was that all of his coaching experience came coaching college. It worries me just as greatly now.

Biggest thing going for Coach Theus right now

if fired, who would replace him? Big names want big talent which we do not have at the moment. Assemble talent, find the right coach. Maybe, given time, Coach Theus will be that coach. He isn’t that guy today, that’s for sure, but he too is a rookie of sorts.

Agreed

I see absolutely no point in firing Theus until/if he loses the team.

Most of the problems ths season have been due to injuries, inexperience and the uncertainty of the abilities of those young players and the lack of finishers among the veterans.

So-

The title really should be “Give Theus No Chance,” as in, when he is relieved of his duties of coaching this 23-59 club at the end of the season, he will have no chance of getting another head coaching gig in the NBA anytime soon.

I agree 100% that Theus should not be fired during the season. That said, bash Reggie! Bash! Bash!! Bash!!!

He lost the team last year

Keep in mind, Theus was handed basically the same team that made a run at San Antonio in the playoffs, without Bonzi Wells.

I say the sooner he’s gone, the better. What’s there to lose? More games? The Kings are on a 10 game losing streak now? I really lost track.

...and I don't believe in this whole "the players aren't skilled enough to win" crap

The players are out there hustling till the very end, game after game. It’s the dumb decisions that Theus makes that loses games. Substituting key players out, killing momentum, calling plays from the bench and timeouts on a fast break? This guy is horrible.

by CloudyEyes on Dec 6, 2008 7:59 PM PST up reply actions

and replace him with who?

further, as I posted earlier, IMO if you have a losing season, lose alot – another #10 lottery pick will not help as much as #1-3. Petrie is great, but give him some lottery love.

FIRE REGGIE....NO MORE CHANCES!

He had his chance last season. His chance was to impress everyone just like you would getting a new job. I mos def gave him a chance last year but he is not doing much this season to show that he should stay as coach of the Kings. The Kings should fire him while they have a chance. And that time is now!
