Game #21: Nuggets at Kings
Denver Nuggets at Sacramento Kings, Dec 6, 2008 7:00 PM PST
The new-look Nuggets visit, with Chauncey Billups in tow. Though Denver lost handily in San Antonio Thursday, the team is much improved since the trade ... though a lot of improvement comes up front, where Nene has been stout and Kenyon Martin a spark.
Sacramento's starters will get a break on the perimeter: Billups will shoot threes, but Dahntay Jones, Carmelo Anthony and the bigs will stay inside 17 feet or so. But off the bench, J.R. Smith and Linas Kleiza will be gunnin'. If Kevin Martin starts, Bobby Jackson's going to have his hands full chasing Smith.
The Kings have been piss-poor at drawing fouls this season ... after finishing #1 in the league in FT/FG last season. Martin should attack frequently. Jones, as you'll remember, is a strong defender. But Denver is Douby-thin up front behind Nene and K-Mart I, with only Chris "The Birdman" Andersen offering relief. Nene has kept out of foul trouble well this year, but historically he's been prone to hack. K-Mart I comes with the added issue of a testy temperment -- let a bad call or two ruin his night and Denver's front line.
Still, Billups should be able to score at will, Salmons doesn't figure to handle 'Melo as Ron Artest did, and no one on the Kings (save maybe Shelden Williams) can stop a rolling Nene. Denver's got a decided advantage, but there exists a path to success for the Kings.
Game's at 7. Let's go Kings.

IF I were a gambling man...
The Nuggets at 4.5 favorites
The Money line is +165 (seem low to anyone else?)
The over/under is at 212.5
Wait....Why is everybody clapping? Everyone around me is clapping.... I guess I should be clapping too... GO LAKERS!!! I hate living in So Cal

I dont like any of those numbers from a gambling perspective
So I guess they’ve got them in the right place. Being that our next two games are against the Lakers, we need a win tonight. I am taking the Kings to at least cover, and the under. Here’s hoping.

it would have to be decided when
you see who they sign in free agency after iverson’s contract ends.

In terms of wins this season
yes. But Detroit is nearing rebuilding time and getting Billups off the books gives them a nice jump start in that direction. With Billups Denver will make the playoffs this year, but do you see any way they will contend for a title over the next 3-4 years? I don’t. They seem like a team that will peak out around a 4-6 seed.

I still think basketball wise they got the better end of the deal
Detroit isn’t guaranteed to get LeBron in 2010. Or whomever else.

This should be a good game
A very winnable one for the Kings tonight.
For the past 3 days, I haven’t been feeling Denver. Now the Kings is finally full, the Reggie Theus watch officially begin.
We can beat good teams at home, we did it quite frequently last year, its time to pick up the pace again this year.

Matchup:
Denver defense is much improved though, still we are an pretty efficient team especially could be with K-Mart.
Keys:
1. Get to the free throw line
2. Three point defense (especially good in last win vs. New Orleans)

Because he is putting up nearly identical numbers to Artest’s from last year, while taking several less shots per game. I bet you’d rather Salmons do bad then the Kings do well this year, Artest fanboy.

I think
you can be critical of Salmons without it being seen as anything about Artest, just like you can criticize Theus’ coaching without wanting to see him fired. The only things that really matter are wins or the building of a franchise that wins eventually, and I don’t think Salmons is a contributor either way.

Kevin's Ass is sore
From the kicking it got by the Nugs. Sorry. How long can this losing streak get before Reggie loses his job? Not that I think he should, because we’re on track for a top five pick and you gotta love that. But this is a really terribly coached team.

And it couldn’t come at a worse time.
3 days rest and to play this flat is just disgusting.

One thing Theus
still had to hang on to was that the guys were still playing hard for him. It seems like that ended tonight. If they play like this against the Lakers, they could lose by 50. A coaching change is needed and I don’t care if its The Whizinator, Reggie’s done.

Freaking woeful
Another blowout loss at home. And now we get a home and home with the Lakers. Can anyone say 5-18?
Theus is running out of excuses. He had a full roster. This team was clearly unprepared from the first minute of the game.
The man is starting to force Kings management into a corner. They could very well believe he’ll be a good NBA coach some day and still have to fire him.

It was a terrible loss
And it could be Reggie’s last, it’s really too bad because he seems to have potential coaching as our young players have potential on the court. Unfortunately 30 point home losses and being on an 8 game losing streak doesn’t cut it in the NBA. This is the highest level basketball in the world and failure is rarely tolerated for any significant period of time- ask Sam Mitchell.

Makes you wonder
If young players are better off with an experienced coach than a guy who is himself learning the ins and outs of the game.

I am not sure how to feel about him leaving the court early. Was he trying to make a point to Theus or the rest of the team? Either way, tonight was a joke. The next two games should suck as well. I am looking for something positive to end on, but it’s just not their tonight. Fuck it.

Upcoming schedule
vs LA Lakers
@ LA Lakers
vs New York
vs Minnesota
@ Portland
@ Houston
@ New Orleans
@ San Antonio
We’ve lost 8 in a row counting tonight and it would take a minor miracle to win either game against the Lakers. The four game road trip is an almost guaranteed four losses. So we have to beat New York or Minnesota to avoid a 16 game losing streak. If the Kings lose one or both of those games, especially if they lose ugly, Reggie is getting fired for Christmas.

Since I was lucky enough to miss this...
I’m kind of flustered. I don’t know what the fuck to say. I like that the youngsters got a ton of minutes, but I assume that this is because of so much garbage time. The rebounding was awesome, especially since half were offensive rebounds. But all that shows is that we missed a ton of shots and that guys like Jason and Spence were hustling. Looking at the box score it seems that we just show terribly. What the fuck happened?
Why is it that our second year center that no one wanted last year and our rookie Power Forward that no one fuckin’ heard of have been our best and most consistent players?
