OT- Kidd to Dallas trade

longtime reader, infrequent commenter, first time Diary entry

So...I dont have the link here, but it's being reported on ESPN's front page.
looks like Devin Harris,Stackhouse, Devean Gorge, Maurice Ager, and a pick or 2 for Kidd.  If this go's thru as reported, the impact players left to be dealt for would be Artest, Bibby, Mike Miller, and maybe Magette? I'm sure there are others, who else? I'm typing this up without researching anything, so im sure I've overlooked something, but who is left in the West that needs to make a move to compete with the Lakers, Mavs, Suns, etc who have just made significant moves?

Consistency
In keeping with my comments regarding the Gasol and Shaq trades, I will go on record and say this deal won't happen. The only question now is will it happen before I get this posted.

Well
Kidd hasn't played in the 1st half of the NJ/Tor game. Says it's a done deal to me. Though I guess he could have an injury I don't know about.

Trade-ables
Also, the Nets were going to send Vince Carter to the Pacers for Jermaine O'Neal, but O'Neal's doctors  scared them off.

Which means, the best still on the block are:

Josh Childress, ATL
Ben Gordon, CHI
Ben Wallace, CHI
Drew Gooden, CLE
Eduardo Najera, DEN
Nene, DEN
Mickael Pietrus, GSW
Jermaine O'Neal, IND
Corey Maggette, LAC
Sam Cassell, LAC
Kyle Lowry, MEM
Mike Miller, MEM
Charlie Villanueva, MIL (I'd actually bet that anyone on this team can be had if wanted, except maybe Andrew Bogut, including Michael Redd if anyone wants to pay his salary)
Antoine Walker, MIN (good luck)
Vince Carter, NJN
Rasual Butler, NOH
Jamal Crawford, NYK
Eddy Curry, NYK
Stephon Marbury, NYK
Zach Randolph, NYK
Quentin Richardson, NYK
Pat Garrity, ORL
Sam Dalembert, PHI
Andre Miller, PHI
Jarrett Jack, POR
Ron Artest, SAC
Mike Bibby, SAC (probably not going anywhere though)
Brad Miller, SAC (even less likely than Bibby)
Brent Barry, SAS
Luke Ridnour, SEA
Wally Szerbiak, SEA
Earl Watson, SEA

...any more?

wow
Wow... talk about panic... very expensive trade for Dallas.

To me this means that this year's (and probably next year's) West Playoffs will be a lot more interesting to watch. And that in 2-3 years both PHO and DAL will experience steep declines, hopefully just in time for the Kings to make their move.

Will Petrie PLEASE get in on some of this panic buying to get us some more young guys and picks?

Thats What I'm Sayin
With this Western Conference rush to win now, teams are gonna be even more desperate for a lockdown defender (Artest) and a sweet-shooting point guard (Bibby).  We should be able to get the most for them now.

I agre, this is perfect
This is great news. In the general scheme of things, the core of the West's elite (San Antonio, Dallas, Phoenix) are lining up for a championship in the next 2 years, with the more conservative ones (...LA.) lining up for the next 3 years.
With all of the Kings expiring contracts set to go off the books at about this time, and a lot of their younger players in their primes or entering into them, it seems that they are in an excellent position where they stand right now.
Although Petrie has made some questionable signings in the past, nearly (cough Ostertag) all of them have made good long-term sense. Although we all had to swallow some vomit back down our throats when he signed Mikki Moore, it's come out to be an intelligent move. Although Mikki is clearly overpaid, his contract will be coming off of the books in 1-2 seasons. Factor in this with SAR, K-9 (woof!), Miller, and Bibby, and the Kings are in prime position to make a run at elite status. Just as the bones of the current elites begin to calcify.
It sucks that we must think longterm to maintain optimism, but at least our team has a future.

You guys might be happy
but these folks aren't. And I'm not talking about Nets fans.

For Wes Cox's reaction read this. Both threads deal with the issue's at hand for the Mavs making this deal.

I must say I find it curious that the Mavs would give up a young developing PG for an older almost done PG, albeit a HOF PG. If it was me I would say no. And firmly. Good for the Kings in trading Artest & Bibby potentially though.

Devin Harris
is a better point guard now than Jason Kidd, straight up.

If money wasn't the object
I wouldn't trade Kidd for Harris straight up.

If money does not factor in
I would take Kidd over Harris if I wanted to win right now, and I would take Harris over Kidd if I were building a team. If I could have either in a Kings uniform right now I would choose Harris over Kidd.

TRADE IS OFF
Devon George used his trade-veto clause to not allow the deal.  The trade is off.

Can you imagine how unpopular he is going to be in his own locke rroom?

And what is Devon George doing with a no-trade clause?

Wait....Why is everybody clapping? Everyone around me is clapping.... I guess I should be clapping too... GO LAKERS!!! I hate living in So Cal

can a guy with a one year, $2.4 million dollar deal leverage his way into vetoing a deal of this magnitude? Infreakincredible!

It's the
1 year contract Early Bird thing. Pretty crazy though.

by Kfan in Korea on Feb 13, 2008 6:23 PM PST up reply actions

It's because of the way his contract is structured
Because those type of contracts usually include a trade veto, because of Bird rights, which Dallas has, and it's not early Bird btw Kfan, George has been in the league too long, but that's essentially what it is. George is consenting to lose his Bird rights with Dallas. He won't do that.

I stand corrected
I misread the trade restriction on the Trade Machine. It said 1 year contract with Early Bird or Bird rights. I glossed over the last part. Thanks for the correction.

Supposedly
Oh nevermind. 27 & Section already pointed this out.  Here is the link from Marc Stein.

And Devean George doesn't want to be traded to a team that won't even be in the playoffs. Would you? (New Jersey should automatically agree to buy him Stack and Diop out. How else can Dallas pull this off?)

Section
Read this from Larry Coon. He explains it appropriately and completely. That being said I'll highlight how George blocked this trade.

Without the player's consent when the player is playing under a one-year contract (excluding any option year) and will have Larry Bird or Early Bird rights at the end of the season.  This includes first round draft picks following their fourth (option) season, who accept their team's qualifying offer for their fifth season.  When the player consents to such a trade, the team loses its Larry Bird/Early Bird rights, and the player is considered a Non-Bird free agent.  Note: when there is an option year involved, they can get around this regulation by invoking the option prior to the trade.

Well
that's the way some contracts are structured. Kevin Garnett blocked a deal for the Wolves until he saw Ray Allen went there.

That being said I always feel it's better to know than not to know.

BUT HIS TEAM IS GOING TO BE PISSED
How does George walk in to their locker room?  "

Hey guys, sorry you dont get to play with Kidd.  At least I already won a ring with the Lakers!"

by 27freethrows on Feb 13, 2008 6:47 PM PST reply actions

I doubt he will be disliked for it
These guys are too arrogant to think stuff like that. Dirk might, but George didn't help himself. Maybe the trade was held up for more than one reason, and George hadn't given his consent.

I don't really see why George wouldn't have given his consent, but whatever that's his pregorative. Stupid, but his choice. It's not like he was on everybody's list to make the Mid Level this offseason anyway.

by pookeyguru on Feb 13, 2008 6:50 PM PST up reply actions

Some other things to note
Had this trade happened the League would have to make a decision on whether Kidd would play in the AS game. I doubt Kidd would have played, and Calderon would have been named as a replacement, but who knows now whether that will happen. Maybe George tomorrow will relent and the deal still happens. I'm curious to see what would happen if that scenario unfolds with Kidd being traded to Dallas and still on the East Coast all-stars. Hehe.

Let me clarify: The reason was
that AI was a reserve or something like that. I don't think he was voted in. Either way he had been in the West long enough to be considered by the coaches or something like that. There is some technical reason why it wasn't the same thing. I think the biggest difference is time though.

This is a great interview by George
He's saying he needs time to assess "his" options. If you were him you would do the same thing. (My gut tells me that George wants minutes from Jersey. Jersey wouldn't guarantee it. George told them to go fuck themselves.)

He just said
that it was a questionable move on the Mavs part to trade a younger talent like Harris. He questioned why Cuban would make a deal such as that before talking to George. He also mentioned his distaste for being able to cut a player (like what would have happened with Stackhouse) and then return to the team 30 days later.

Wait, what the hell is going on here?
Isn't this the same Devin Harris that people were questioning whether Portland would give up Channing Frye, Travis Outlaw and Jarret Jack for?

Comparing values, Would you trade those three for Kidd? Would you trade those three for Harris?

Hard to say... what is certain though is that if Dallas does this deal, it is trading defense for offense - hilarious, if you consider Phoenix just traded offense for defense. Everyone's trying to come up with their solution for the Spurs, and LA is the only team that has gotten undoubtedly better via their wheeling-and-dealing.
