Ron Artest to San Antonio?

According to ESPN's Chad Ford (via Insider):

Believe it or not, Ron Artest's name has come up in San Antonio. Some believe that given the team's system, he can be controlled and would give them more toughness on the wing, where Bruce Bowen is slowing down. Bringing in Artest may sound far-fetched given the Spurs' emphasis on character and chemistry, but remember that Stephen Jackson was the starting shooting guard for one of the Spurs' recent title teams. If the need is powerful enough, San Antonio will do what it takes to win.

Brent Barry is a big, fat expiring. I'm not sure what the Spurs would give up, though. What do you guys think?

I think the Kings need to get
a strong return back for Artest. I have a post on what shedding Bibby's contract did for the team upcoming shortly I hope.

Pookey
If they can attach KT to Artest in a deal, would it make getting expirings back more palatable?

In a perfect world, you'd attach KT and still get back talent, but I'm not sure we can get both talent and expirings. Where is coolcat to do some San Antonio trade machine scenarios???

Disclaimer: I am anti-Bibby.

If I could shed K-9 and Artest
for exprirings this year, I'd do it in a heartbeat. People who have cap space are the one's who can snatch up bargains when other teams are over the cap. I just hope and pray that once we do have cap space we don't go on a crazy spending spree.

How would it be to have SA's lineup AND $18m in expirings? That is a team that has been managed very very well.

Well Otis
You can't just trade Kenny Thomas. He's expensive, and Artest's talent, as immense as it is, is not exactly a guy every team will salivate over. That being said the Jason Kidd trade looked dead for a long time, until Mark Cuban became desperate. So I'm holding out hope Petrie can deal k9 along with Artest for expiring contracts and young talent. That will surely solve several of the Kings current problems (and set them on a course of other issues--all of which I'm more than happy to embrace).

Let me just say this. If I was a team, and found that I had to give a Brandan Wright, and take on a contract, I'd rather have Mikki Moore. Sure the Kings want k9 gone, but if you're them you would have to settle to move Mikki if the opportunity arises doesn't it?

Big difference between shedding bibby and artest..
Bibby cleared up lots of salary cap space... he had another year.  We get rid of artest this year regardless... so if we're shipping him out he has to either take some baggage like KT with him, or we have to get someone that will either be good for our team, or great trade bait.

Even bigger question
Miller to SA for expirings and?

As to PG's comment, I would be willing to package Mikki with Artest if I could get someone like Wright in the deal.

by SavageBeast on Feb 18, 2008 12:49 PM PST   0 recs

That's kind of what i was aiming at Savage but
it's more of a comment about attaching Artest to whoever you get back.

What I mean is
it's about finding a way to deal Artest, and attaching a contract, Mikki's or k9's, to free up that cap room.

I'm on board.
Anything to free up some space. The Hydra members are all interchangeable at this point. I would prefer to see the Kings waive Lorenzen Wright and re-sign J-Will. Let the Williams' boys play the bulk of the minutes along with Miller and Hawes.

Lets' see some ugly hoops!

I'm with ya on that
I'm just confused on why the Kings didn't waive Wright immediately and why they had to free up a spot for the other 3 hawks. That makes no sense if you're going to waive 2 guys almost immmediately.

(I realize I might be speaking out my ass here. I just haven't seen anything written as a rule that says you MUST only have 15 players on the roster when doing a trade.)

There is no way that Wright is tradeble again.
The Kings were required to get below the roster limit of 15 before the trade could go through but I don't understand the Bee's assertion that Williams and Jones are not coming back this season. The only thing I can figure is that Petrie knows that he is going to deal Artest and might have to take back multiple players when doing so. If Petrie signs Williams back, he is going to have to waive him again in a few days so Theus might as well play with a limited bench until everything shakes out. I will be pissed if J-Will is picked-up elsewhere before the Kings can bring him back.

In ESPN 2K5
The Video Game, you're not allowed to have a roster of over 15 players in Association mode - and they try to make it as realistic as possible.

So, maybe there is a rule?

The biggest obstacle
On trading Kenny with Ron to San Antonio: They do not like long contracts, except for their Big Three. The extensions they gave Matt Bonner and Bruce Bowen this summer were surprising; only Parker, Duncan and Manu make big money. They'll keep it that way unless they think a) Ron gets them another title, and b) Kenny can be productive the next two years.

You aren't getting them to take on K-9, basically. So you'd be trading for expiring contracts, a pick and a prospect, like with almost any other contender. As for the prospects... I'd be happy with either Ian Mahinmi or the rights to Tiago Splitter. I think San Anto's higher on Mahinmi (so am I), and I'm not sure whether they'd want to give up Elson or Finley in such a deal. Either one's an expiring.

I think I'd prefer Mahinmi to Kleiza, but Kleiza to Splitter. I could be wrong, tho. (The source of my love for Mahinmi: SanAn thinks of him as the successor to Duncan.)

San Antonio? I would be surprised
This is about the only deal I see San Antonio offering:

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/features/traderesult?players=25~234~347~866&teams=24~23~23~23&t e=&cash=

They may throw in a draft pick.

I don't think they want to give up Barry or any of their core players, and I think if they had their way, they'd keep either Elson or Horry, who are both playing about 13 minutes a game.

They definitely are not going to take on Thomas, and I doubt if they have any interest in Mikki Moore. These guys are smart, remember?

I think the Kings can get a better deal than this. If not, keep Ron.

So, in Conclusion
This idea is whack unless Petrie is expecting no value in return for Artest.

No, you can never say never....
San Antonio is a master of the three team deal, where they give up very little and reap the benefits of other teams. Go back to the Brad Miller trade and check it out. Plus, SA knows their window is closing so loading up this year might be in the cards. We have only explored a straight up deal and discounted all the unsigned foreign born players the Spurs have been banking for the last few years.

Thanks... meant to put a question mark at the end of that, so good thing you responded anyway.
