Joe Maloof on Ron Artest & More

(From the diaries. - TZ)

I was listening to a podcast between J.A. Adande and Joe Maloof on the main NBA page of espn.com and I heard some interesting tidbits. The main thing that caught my attention was Joe's comment regarding Ron Artest. This is a direct quote, slightly paraphrased, made around the 5:30 minute mark of the podcast. "I love Ron Artest... I hope he does not opt-out... and that we have an opportunity to resign him to a longterm contract."

Star-divide

Maybe this isn't anything new but I'm interested to hear the Royalty's take on this. He seemed fairly sincere and, in my estimation, dead serious about his desire to retain Ron Artest for the long haul. He mentioned how Artest "saved the team last season, oh I mean two seasons ago" and how he makes Gavin's little heart go pitter-patter. He also mentioned that missing the playoffs last year was a "catastrophe" and that he was real excited about the fast development and "above the rim" play of Shock and Hawes (by the way who coined that Kfan in Korea is the first I've seen...anybody want to take the credit here).

Joe also mentioned that the pickup of Beno has been key in the Kings' strong youth movement but he did not mention any potential contract offerings even though he was included in the conversation on the future of the Kings. The fact that Joe seemed so readily dejected at the thought of the Kings not being a factor in the playoff race has slightly changed my thinking on how tight the purse strings will be in the future. I, like most here, have diligently clung to the idea that the Maloofs would under no uncertain circumstances pay the luxury tax. Maybe it was just to seem positive, but Joe seemed very determined to put a winning product on the floor here in Sacramento. The Maloofs are businessmen so I am positive that they know the Kings' cap situation and that they basically cannot really sign anyone of significance after Beno, IF he accepts what the Kings have to offer. However, as I have indicated, he seems set on offering a deal to Ron-Ron and I truly believe in my heart that Artest will receive some sort of offer by the Kings. We here at StR have diligently debated the pros and cons of having Artest on this team so I'm not trying to directly stimulate that debate here, although I will surely participate and encourage it if that occurs. I am more interested if y'all (yes I live in Texas....what you wanna fight about it) think that Ron will really get an offer (if he does not opt-out) from the Kings. If he does get an offer, how can this be fiscally accomplished?

On a side note I have offically given-up as the Kings travel to Houston tonight and I'm not going to go. Since the win streak is over for the Rockets the arena should be empty, as usual. Should be competitive as the Rockets won last meeting (with the win streak at around 8) on a last second Novak three. If the Kings pull that out then history is not made...funny how the world works.

For those who care: It looks as if Kfan in Korea did coin the term Shock and Hawes with an assist from TZ. On another note, Spencer was 14 years old when the original Shock and Awe occcured. Yikes!

replying to myself!
Ok, I listened to the podcast, read the comments written here, and had to re-listen to the podcast.

I actually really liked the things Joe had to say.  Granted, his public (er, interview) speaking skills were worse than amagined, he came off being very genuine.

I definintely thought Joe was making a point to Ron; don't opt-out and we'll sign you to a big contract next year, but if you opt-out this year, buh-bye.  In Ron's defense, I dont know if I would trust that, because nobody knows what the future may hold.  Also, while my criticism of Ron has been fairly obvious, I am starting to hope he doesnt opt-out, and we have some serious trade bait come next year.  Rebuilding is going to take time and some good moves (please Pitrie, please), so I would rather get something for him in 10 months, then nothing for him in 4.  Of course, putting together a sign-and-trade would be great, dpeending on who we get back and at what price.

I think
that as a rule, any time one of the Maloofs says "we hope to resign you long term" is pretty much means it won't happen. So, keeping mum on Beno, and saying he wants to resign Ron long term means "bye Ron, hello Beno."

at least that's what I hope

Couple Things
Adande mentions a common mistake said by the national media: Joe Maloof is a co-owner of the Sacramento Kings. This is true, but he says it as if he's one of 2 guys who owns the team. As we all know the "Family" does.

A couple of things about re-signing Artest.

  1. Artest wants his money
  2. Joe made a point about the league not being able to put another team in Seattle, but stressing at the same time that he didn't have any inside info

I think this interview proves, if nothing else, that Joe Maloof's interviewing skills need work. He has a hard time clearly enunciating on air, with the added bonus of sounding both clueless and excited at the same time. A cynical prick like me thinks that when your owner says our young 7 footer from Washington, like someone can't Wiki Shock & Hawes if they so chose, it kinda says that he's not really going to give you information. I thought the information was mostly designed to present 2 things:

  1. We like Artest and want to keep him
  2. We like Sacramento and our hopes and dreams, pertaining to the Kings, were always in Sacramento

Thank You and have a good night.

Idiocy
I assume they're going to off the guy guaranteed money too.  Pure idiocy.

I liked your first post better
especially if it ended at off.

Just kidding...of course.

off the guy.
D'oh.

Again, just kidding.

Crappy mood tonight despite the guys playing a decent first half.

Hitting the circuit?
I was listening to Joe Maloof on Jim Rome's radio show sometime last week (pushing their appearance on "Oprah's Big Give" or something) and he was saying the same things (paraphrased quotes):

  • "Gavin loves him"
  • "We hope Artest doesn't opt out"
  • "If he doesn't opt out, we'd like to offer him a long-term deal" -- I found this interesting because he never mentioned offering Artest a long-term deal if he did opt out
  • "We don't think he's going to opt out, but that's up to Artest and his agent"

Not exactly definitive, but he sounded very serious about keeping Ron Ron around, if possible.  If nothing else, he's in their plans.

Furthermore, I got the same impression as Pookey about his lack of interview skills as well, and find it even more interesting that he apparently said pretty much the same things and still didn't sound more comfortable/confident (full disclosure: I haven't listened to the JA interview yet).

Interesting point on no long-term deal if he does
opt out. Could be because, any raise for Artest for the 08-09 season coupled with resigning Beno, rookie contract(s) and Kmart's extension, would put us over the Luxury Tax threshold for next season.

Shock and Hawes
I believe I was the first to post it here, in this thread. As far as I know I came up with it. But that doesn't mean that it isn't possible that I heard it somewhere, forgot about it and "came up with it" at a later time. It's also not a stretch to think that someone else could come up with it independently, before or after I did.

Regarding Artest. If he doesn't opt out, we'll be flirting with the luxury tax to resign Beno, with Kmart's extension kicking in, signing our draft pick/picks and filling out the roster. Though I think it is doable.

Any extension for Artest would then kick-in for the '09-'10 season. I don't think we have any contracts coming off the books after next year(Miller/K9/Reef all expire after '09-'10), though I think Mikki's deal is optional for that year. So we could combine Artest's ~8mil and Mikki's ~6mil to cover Artest's new contract.

But, it's really too early to get into the numbers as it is so far out that there are too many variables. If we extend Cisco this summer it would kick in that year too, do we pick up the options on Sheldon and Douby, will the Luxury Tax line continue to edge up, or will it start going down, do we make any trades over the next year and a half, etc.

we owe you royalties for using it?

You're great with the nicknames by the way.  I still love the Shaw of I Slam too.

Funny.
I kept thinking about your excellent analogy and my best worst ex-b/f's during the game tonight...not specifically on each of them, just their best and worst qualities when it came to dependability and follow through.

Conclusion:
Given a dysfunctional childhood (DC) and no therapy, I'd have married him (speaking in a team sports kind of way).

DC and enough therapy, I'd have run from him.

DC and bad/not enough therapy, I'd find him strangely attractive even while knowing he was bad for my future emotional health and stability.

Wally 'n Beaver Cleaver/Brady Bunch childhood, no conclusion possible.  He's outside their known world.

My new personal nicknames for Joe 'n Gavin are Wally 'n the Beav.

Pros and Cons
While I lean towards the camp that says Artest doesn't opt out and we also don't resign him, putting him and us in limbo for another half season until next year's trade deadline, he does have some compelling stats to consider along with his oft-stated negatives.

Ron ranks 25th in Roland Rating among all players and sixth among small forwards.

He ranks 40th among all players in PER and sixth among small forwards.

Among small forwards, on a per game basis he's:

  • 2nd in steals.
  • 7th in scoring.
  • 7th in minutes.
  • 8th in assists.
  • 10th in turnovers.
  • 11th in rebounding.
  • 12th in blocks.
  • 26th in FG%.
  • 34th in 3-pt. FG%.

The big negative: only 49 games played this season. Plus all the other stuff.

If he goes bye bye, I hope we add an equivalent player(s) to the team, because I'm not real interested in watching total suckage next year.
