Will Beno re-sign?

This is from the Yahoo Fantasy Sports news page, but is references the Bee.  I for one really hope he re-signs.

Star-divide

Mar 26 Udrih, questionable with back spasms Wednesday versus Memphis, recently said he isn't sure whether he will sign with Sacramento beyond this season, the Sacramento Bee reports.
Recommendation: "We'll see," said Udrih, who signed a one-year contract with the Kings in 2007-08. "It's too early to say ... I have seriously no clue. The season is still going, so we'll talk about it later." The fourth-year point guard will be a hot commodity on the free agent market this summer. He wants to know his future before July 7, so he can play for the Slovenian national squad. Teams can begin negotiating with free agents July 1.

I doubt Beno will get more than the MLE
For this real reason. Philly has cap room, but Andre Miller. Memphis has cap room, but has Mike Conley. Seattle has a bit of cap room, but I don't think they'll have enough to offer Beno MORE than the MLE. In other words it's favorable for Beno to play both sides to get him more money. But the truth is it's not as if he's earned more than the MLE at this point with his play to begin with.

Jose Calderon
would have to be signed first before other teams consider Beno

depends
on whether we draft Darren Collison

Btw, this statement 'recently said he isn't sure whether he will sign with Sacramento beyond this season' is very misleading. All he said was he's not thinking about it as of the moment

A free agent to be
that's considering his options.

Absolutely!
If he comes out and says "Yes, absolutely, I intend to be a King for life. I bleed purple. Larry Reynolds is my personal hero," then he'd have less bargaining power

And if he comes out and says, "No freakin' way do I re-sign with this bunch. And that Peaches guy? What a buffoon!" then other teams think they can get him on the cheap, not to mention alienating the fans and the organization who gave him a chance.

What did anyone expect him to say other than what he said?

Beno and Injuries
That's one of the knocks on Beno, and sitting out the last week or so doesn't help change that perception.

Beno Options
A list of potential options suggest in no particular order:

New Orleans (need a back-up)
Denver (most pressing need)
Cleveland (Delonte West sucks)
Miami (Jason Williams is a goner, need youth)
New York (Stephon Marbury is a goner)
Minnesota (LOL... but Jaric and Telfair... ugh)
Orlando (Nelson is erratic and Arroyo is a goner)
Los Angeles Clippers (Livingston's career is O-V-E-R)
LA Lakers (Derek Fisher isn't getting younger)
Phoenix (Look at Nash, he could use a back-up)

I think teams like Cleveland, Miami, Denver, New York are attractive options. It doesn't matter how  dysfunctional a franchise like the Knicks or the HEAT are, free agents just love going to New York and play at Madison Square Garden. You can't help that the Knicks, who are going to have a more competent GM will do for the Knicks. Walsh has made the Pacers a consistent winner and the Knicks are the ultimate challenge for him.

All those teams have something in common
They're all over the cap for next season. They won't be able to pay Beno MORE than what the Kings would. So it comes down to PT, or what potential PT Beno would get. I think the question is how much of the MLE Beno would get at this point. A cynical person could say all of it because that's what the market would demand with a likelihood of not too many FA's around because of the lack of teams with cap space (many of which are trying to take a run at the 2003 draft class).

Situation not pay to decide Beno's destination
The Kings can't offer more than the MLE either. The Kings don't hold his bird rights because they signed him for a one year deal. If you're Beno Udrih would you rather be the starter for the Denver Nuggets, Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat or the  Sacramento Kings.

Denver and Cleveland are in far better position to contend for a championship than the Kings will be and they can both offer the full MLE to Beno. Miami still has Wade, Marion, Riles and an attractive market and location. New York is also an attractive place again because of market and location.

I think for Beno with pay being equal, winning and situation is the next option. Another underrated aspect of it all is loyalty which the Kings have a huge advantage in. The Kings made Beno what he is right now.

I would love Beno to stay in Sacramento for the next couple of years but you have to ask  yourself, is Beno a championship caliber point guard and do you envision Beno running a game winning play in the NBA Finals or as the playmaker to a championship team.

Beno
How many PGs will be in the draft?

How many are supposedly decent?

Of the teams picking before the Kings how many of them would take a PG?

From the list above probably these teams right?

Miami
New York
Minnesota
Los Angeles Clippers

title?
Let's not forget that Beno already has a title! Obviously he didn't play a major role, but he does have one.

For this reason, playing for an immediate cotender may not figure in his choices.
He may opt for playing time and the chance to prove he is one of the leagues best PG's and maybe "take" a team all the way.

I'm hoping so!

Actually
He has two rings in his first 3 years in the NBA.

Right now, I think he'd rather find someplace he can start, be a major contributor and be happy.

Just my opinion. Beno hasn't been in touch lately.

Cleveland and Denver
Beno can get PT, money and contend for a title with Lebron in Cleveland or get PT, money and contend with Denver.

The Kings right now cannot offer contending for a championship. No one ever goes somewhere to get paid and lose basketball games.

Denver and Cleveland
would both be paying luxury tax if they sign him, so they can only offer him the MLE. If they offer him a full MLE they will pay him $6 million and pay the league another $6 million next year.

Oh,
and as far as no one ever goes somewhere to get paid and lose basketball games, I would suggest Joe Johnson. You could also throw in re-signings such as Gerald Wallace and Michael Redd, just to name two.

touche!!
yeh he does have 2 rings. i forgot about the second one.... all i could see in my head was Jacque Vaughn playin backup in 2006-7.

to change the subject briefly, can anyone give me a good reason as to why they think Shelden Williams is not being played much??

I would've thought the fact the playoff hunt was over a while ago, Shelden would be receiving major minutes? Maybe not?

Can anyone enlighten me? Am I missing something over here in Australia?

by thisismellow on Mar 28, 2008 3:33 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Shelden Williams
My only guess (and it's a blind arse guess) is that he has to earn his time with Reggie just like anyone else. Hawes had to work very hard on defense to earn his time. 3-Wil never did earn his time. Perhaps Shelden is facing the same thing.

Beno's back
is my concern.  Back's are almost impossible to fix if something is wrong.
