Rafter Riff, GP & RA

So C-Webb and Vlade are in, Peja and Bibby are out. That's two up, two down (I'm going to hear that a lot during Giants games this year), and we move on to Geoff Petrie and Rick Adelman. No numbers to retire, but do we hoist a jersey for either of these gentlemen?

GP's poll below, Adelman to follow -

NOOOOOOOOOO
The Petrie and Adelman questions are beyond ridiculous to me.  Besides the obvious question (what exactly do you retire?), I think that the only way you hoist banners for non-players is if they bring you championships.  Even then, I still think it's silly, but without some rings, it's downright ridiculous.  The only people in these polls who should be retired are C-Webb (because he was the best), Divac (because he was the most beloved), and Gary Gerould (because he's old-school Sacramento).  Anyone else is just grasping at straws.  I hate to bring it up, but we DID NOT win a championship with this group.  We got to the Western Conference Finals...once...and lost!  If we had won a championship, then by God, hang the whole bunch in the rafters.  Hang Lawrence freakin' Funderburke in the rafters.  But it never happened.  One unsuccessful appearance in the Western Conference Finals is as far as the T-Wolves got...so should Kevin McHale be retired by Minnesota as a GM?  Ludicrous.

I agree with DB
I think retiring a number for Geoff Petrie is ridiculous. I'm going to copy this conversation for Adelman as well.

I think it's porous on several levels. First off what kind of standard are you setting for the rafters? From a purely beneficial standpoint he does belong, especially if Jerry Reynolds is up there for the Monarchs. That being said DOES Jerry belong up there? No, he doesn't. It's all a PR Ploy. I say fuck that.

Since there are two sides
I can't call the argument "ludicrous." I have not made up my mind yet, but one could argue that Adelman set a victory mark here that may never be surpassed. Someone is going to have to coach (and win) here a long time to surpass him. And there is no 2nd best coach here. It's Adelamn and a bunch of losers (statistically - I'm sure they were all nice guys).

If Vlade goes up for what he meant to the franchise then you have to at least consider Petrie, as he was the one that truly made this franchise legitimate.

The 6th man is in the rafters and so is Fred Anderson, so the question of "what do you exactly retire?" is asked and answered, as it would be for (say) Gary Gerould.

Again, I asked each of these questions without bias and I have still not made up my mind. As I mentioned in the C-Webb post, I was counting on enlightenment from my StR neighbors. Your points are valid, DB, but I think that the points that I brought up at least makes the conversation worth having.

There's a precedent...
The Rockets recently retired former GM Carroll Dawson's "jersey" on the rafters. They didn't give him a number, just the initials "CD".

Just sayin'.
