Spencer Hawes, Rookie of the Year

(One more, in lustrous color -- the kind of luster you'd find at the Diamond and Gold Vault in the Landmark office building on East Bidwell in Folsom; tell 'em Peaches sent ya -- after the jump.)

It's just as awesome a Fat told us it was.
Spencer has my ROY vote.

if only K9 (woof!) knew...
it would be so easy to have all of his sins forgiven.  I retract any negative statement I have ever made regarding Shawes.  He is an American Hero.

That rocks like no one's business.  Well worth the price of admission.

Is the cell phone picture...
In the practice facility/business office?

I love this kid. This, along with the Brad Miller headband tribute put him high in my books.

ROY, MVP, HOF
I cannot possibly say enough good things about Spencer Hawes.  All that stuff I said earlier in the year?  Yeah, that was all wrong.

The kid has guts - going RIGHT at the Spurs, he can play, as he proved over the last few weeks/months and he has a HELL of a sense of humor.

Go Hawes!

awesome t-shirts aside
Spencer has really impressed me during his extended minutes. It's fairly obvious (when Ron's not on the floor) that the team's testing out plays to run the offense through him ala Brad and Vlade. And aside from a few mishandlings of the ball (which I'm chalking up to Rookieness), I gotta say I'm impressed. That pass over the shoulder of Tim freaking Duncan last night was downright beautiful.

Can we all agree to campaign for startingjob for Shawes next season? Sorry Mikki, but I think it's back to "where not starting in the NBA happens" for you.

I'm Grant Napear's favorite fan.

To be fair,
Mikki Moore would make an exceptional bench player.  He always plays with a ton of energy, but lacks the skill set of an NBA player.  Just the dose of energy though would be a great infusion off the bench (think BobJ).

Wonder if GRant has the balls...
to tell Spencer not to wear the shirt? Would YOU tell a 19 year old millionaire who is twice your size not to wear something? I wouldn't.

God forbid Spencer misses any games next season, I would hope he'd wear that shirt courtside. Granted, it wouldn't fit the NBA Dress Code requirements, but I'm sure he could dress it up with a nice sports coat.

Also, if Kevin Martin weren't one of the best scorers in the league, Spencer would be my favorite Kings player. He'll just have to settle with a close second though.

Hawes
did some impressive things on offense vs the Spurs last night, that is true. He's got some skilz putting the ball in the bucket. And I dig the attire in the above photos.

BUT lest we get too carried away, might I remind you all that three stinkin rebounds in 33 minutes (Spencer's stat line) is not what we wanna see out of our C/PF.

Until the Kings have got somebody in the front-court who can sweep the ball off the boards and get in people's faces on defense they're gonna be on the outside looking in.

Hawes
Isn't meant to be that guy. He was drafted to be MillerPlus, a big man with small man skills, and a more athletic upgrade.

We need a true PF, ala Chris Webber. Big man with big man skills, good hands, attitude, and court vision.

Then, and only then, are we dangerous.

Hawes vs. other rookie bigs
Agreed, Hawes does need to improve on the boards. I think added strength and improved footwork will make him better.

That said, his per 40 rebounding number is 9.9, which would place him ahead of rookie bigs Jason Smith, Yi Jianlian, and Glen Davis, on a par with Sean Williams and Luis Scola, slightly behind Brandan Wright and Joakim Noah, and a couple of rebounds per game behind Carl Landry and Al Horford.

Not horrible for a soon to be 20 year old kid with a lot of upside.

Many of those guys are at least 2 years older
than Spencer too. In Scola's case he's not even really a "rookie". He's 28 years old for chrissakes. Putting a hard working 19 year old kid in a box is stupid. Want proof? Proof: Kobe Bryant.
